Religious Comic Store Owner Boycotts Action Comics #1

Religious Comic Store Owner Boycotts Action Comics #1

This old chestnut again. A North Carolina based store owner has boycotted Grant Morrison's Action Comics because Superman says "GD" at one point. That's right, not "God", just almost! Click for the hilarious details..

Here is the offending page below. It's the final panel which caused the owner of the Comics Conspiracy in North Carolina to call for a boycott. You can read his Facebook posts (via Bleeding Cool on the matter after the pic.

As of today’s release of Action Comics #1 by Grant Morrison, The Comic Conspiracy, will until further notice, be boycotting all future Grant Morrison books. If you want Action Comics, you will have to buy it elsewhere.

Christian comic book readers and shop owners. Join us in the Grant Morrison Boycott. Action Comics #1 is a slap in the face to Superman, Christians and Superman creators Siegel and Shuster!!

I could see Guy Gardner and maybe even Hal Jordan (Green Lanterns) saying it. I could see Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) saying it. I could easily see Damian Wayne (Robin) or MAYBE even Bruce Wayne saying it. But Superman was created to be the “perfect” super-hero. Unblemished. Superman is an American icon.

It grieves me to see a liberal Scottish schmuck like Grant Morrison take these liberties. I’m sorry, Superman would NEVER take God’s name in vain. In the words of the late Jim Croce, “You don’t tug on Superman’s cape.

The story “attitude” didn’t bother me. I’ve had to accept a LOT of changes over my nearly 35 years in the business. However, Superman saying “GD” isn’t going to fly with me.

This wasn’t creative flow. It wasn’t necessary in the story. It isn’t Superman at all. And it goes against a basic Christian principle. It was a blatant stab.

I deal with books like “Crossed” and “The Boys”. I accepted gay characters being introduced into a children specific book like Archie Comics. I however am getting very tired of having comic writer’s liberal agendas force fed to me. Mr. Morrison has stepped over my line. If I have to stand alone on this… I will.

The boycott stands. All orders for Action Comics #2, as well as any other books written by Grant Morrison will be cancelled as soon as Diamond Comics opens it’s offices today. I ask my customers to understand as best they can. I understand that it’s only a comic and it’s not the real world, but I feel that as a Christian I have to draw the line somewhere.

It's a bit confusing to be honest. Even IF Superman had said "God", why would that bother a Christian? He is a character in a story. But that being said it wouldn't exactly surprise me. But he doesn't say that! He clearly says "GD", which I have absolutely no idea what is supposed to mean. Anyway, I won't go into this too much. What do you guys think?

I am not a Christian and dont really give a shit about what Christian's are offended by or not offended by, but I think he is implying that the "GD" part of the comic was intended to mean "God Damn". In your article you act like the GD was just meant to mean God without the o, but GD is God Damn, and if thats what Grant Morrison intended it to mean, then yeah, it is taking the Christian lord's name in vain so thats why the dude got all pissed. Good by him for standing by his principles.

When I read that word balloon on Wednesday I just thought "GD" was a sound Superman made from the impact. You know like "Ugh" or "Ahhh". Thanks for letting me know it meant God Damn conservative douche.

Ah ok, I have never seen that abbreviation before. We don't really use the expression "God Damn" here. I still have no idea why he is getting his holy knickers in a twist.

People get offended by such ridiculous things. Even if it said flat out "God Damn!" they are just words without any meaning behind them. Supes didn't and would never say "I damn you to hell, God!" so get a [frick]ing grip.

The same people who are saying ridiculous to this guy boycotting Grant Morrison are probably the same people that are boycotting the new Star Wars Blu-ray release. [frick]ing hypocritical nerds....

While I dont know everything about the store owner I think this was not a good idea. While its good that he sticks to his guns his beliefs are not the same as his customers. I wonder if his christian beliefs kept him from selling Thor, Hercules, Wonderwoman or any other superhero based on mythology or that is supposed to be a god or goddess.

This Guy needs to grow up. Personally myself i dont believe in God. If you do i dont wanna offend you but thats the point, everyone can believe what they want. what makes this even worse is that this is a fictional story and he's mad about it like a real person said something blasphemous about the big guy upstairs. ITS NOT REAL GET OVER IT! ITS A COMIC BOOK. GD loser boycott my comment if you want there you go see if i care.....HA!

Also, he says its a "blatant stab"?!?! Are you serious dude?! Yes I'm sure when Grant Morrison was writing this he said to himself "You know what, lets through a "GD" in there to screw with the Christians. Seriously dude, get off your righteous horse and stop being a douche.
Shaman
Shaman - 9/9/2011, 5:40 AM
And seriously, "God" isn't his name so NO he isn't "taking the Christian lord's name in vain". If he had yelled "Jesus!" THEN and only THEN would he have "taking the Christian lord's name in vain".

People like this give Christians a bad name.

If I were hit that hard in the stomach, I'd sure make the sound "GD", and when I got my breath back, I'd be saying a whole bunch of other things too. All without swearing, of course.

I'm not offended as a person by the use of the term. People can say/write whatever they want. However, it is a misuse of the character to think that someone raised in a farming community in Kansas would have that as part of their go-to swear set. "Holy shit!"...sure "[frick] me!"...maybe. "GD" (abbreviated or otherwise)...Hell no.

Hey guys and I wont say "GD" because its against my religion (Roman Catholic). Thanks for the article, Ror! I wont read that comic! Theres absolutely no reason to say "GD" in a comic or movie! Its an insult to all of Christianity!

To all the fools who commented negatively, way to show your maturity level!

What people are neglecting to realize is that Supes is an alien, who's to say he's Christian at all?

Whether or not you think this guy is a nut job, religious intollerant or whatever the case maybe, he is standing on his principles. That, by far, is more than some will ever do in their life time. My only question for this guy is this, if he is boycotting Morrison for throwing out the "GD", why isnt he doing it for any other comic, movie or anime flick that is out there?
SuperSomething616

Get over yourself you bible bumming gaylord!!!
RunDTC
RunDTC - 9/9/2011, 6:03 AM
so he accepts gay characters in comics, but he doesn't like the use of GD? that doesn't add up. you can't pick and choose what parts of the Bible you think you should live by. what upsets me as a Christian is people who are able to get the opinion spread out, while saying they're a Christian, but what they say or do does not match up with that (like Miley Cyrus, who's crazy enough already). this guy is just in it for the publicity.
Shaman
Shaman - 9/9/2011, 6:07 AM
DoubleJack22- To call people with open minds "immature" really shows your maturity level. They are words with no meaning or intent behind them. He didn't yell out "Damn Jesus" or "Damn Yaweh", he didn't even yell out "God Damn" for Christ's sake. God is NOT a name, it's a title. Stop acting like a child that just heard someone call his mother a "poopy head".
MarkCassidy

"Theres absolutely no reason to say "GD" in a comic or movie! Its an insult to all of Christianity!"

Sorry Doublejack (nice drink by the way) but it isn't, it really isn't. If YOU are personally offended by it then that's fine but it is in no way an insult, or designed to bean insult to Christianity.

Anyway, I like how this dude picks and chooses what he believes is in keeping with his Christian beliefs. Apparently saying "GD" is out, but depictions of anal rape and dismemberment are all good in God's eyes.

Bottom line is that he is a private business owner with his own set of beliefs and principles. Lets respect an individuals right to be offended by anything, it makes the world a more interesting place. The consumer market will determine if this hurts his business or helps him and if you don't like his business decisions, don't shop there. Jumping on forums or message boards to complain about people's religious tendencies is dumb, especially considering there are other religions that stone and behead people on a regular basis for the smallest of infractions. Let's keep that in perspective.

I've never understood the big deal about the phrase God Damn. You're asking God to damn something right? To me its just like praying. Either way your asking for a favor.
