AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 Jumps Six Months Into The Future...And Ends With A Crazy Status Quo Change For [SPOILER]

The first issue of Amazing Spider-Man jumps six months into the future and makes some bonkers status quo changes to Peter Parker's life, with one character, in particular...well, you have to see this!

Marvel Comics released the first issue from Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr.'s Amazing Spider-Man run yesterday, and with just five issues to go before #900 swings into comic book stores, things started with a bang. However, it's the ending that has generated the most discussion these past 24 hours.

For reasons which aren't entirely clear, something has happened in the past six months that's led to Peter Parker having a strained relationship with his friends and family. He's dismissive of Johnny Storm and Randy Robertson, and even his Aunt May appears to have had enough of being lied to. There's also someone looking to collect money for unpaid medical bills, while Mary Jane is dodging Peter's calls.

When we last saw the happy couple, they made plans to move in together, but on the final page of Amazing Spider-Man #1, MJ appears to be in a relationship with a guy called Paul...and she has two kids calling her "mommy." Has reality somehow been rewritten? Is it possible that MJ has been hiding the fact that she's a mother from Peter for the past several years? And who the f*** is Paul?!

These are questions Marvel is clearly going to reveal over the coming weeks and months, but an epilogue shows Doctor Octopus at the mercy of a mysterious new villain who is out for Spidey's blood.

What did you guys think about Amazing Spider-Man #1 and this big MJ reveal?

Whoever the mysterious bad guy is on the last page, he talks with the Ultimate Universe font so he must be a ultimate character. Also, this issue was pretty good I’m actually interested to see how these stories play out and how Peter is gonna get his life back together again lol

@Asterisk - First thing I thought too, but the X-men titles also have that same font now. He could be a mutant maybe

This **** is why I abandoned TASM for Miles' book years ago. It sucks, because Peter is what got me into comics, but Marvel Editorial absolutely REFUSES to ever let him grow or progress in life. And it's so stupid because everyone thought back in '15 that bringing Miles into the 616 was going to solve that - Let Miles be the teen Spidey! But no, they're still dragging us along telling us "This time will be different!" only to smack him back to the lonely man-child who is never allowed to succeed at anything.

It's no wonder great writers like Zdarsky refuse to take on TASM. As someone who would love to write comics one day, and for whom Spider-man has always been my favorite hero, I don't think I could sign on to the book either. Marvel has made it abundantly clear that no matter the writer, their editorial stranglehold on the character won't change anytime soon.

@SerKurtWagner - I don’t think this is just editorial. I think the fan base also freaks the [frick] out when somethings too different or thinks it’s gimmicky or whatever, even if it turns out years later oh no everyone now thinks this story is a classic. So they’re probably more cautious than ever to keep it relatively within spideys usual status quo.

@Asterisk - That is mostly true with comics but the fans have been demanding them to undo OMD and let Peter and MJ stay together for over a decade now, though.

Marvel's refusal to let Peter get into any new permanent phase in his life is so frustrating. Big reason why I stopped reading the modern Spdey comics.

I would not be mad if this was something definitive, but we all know it's just a gimmick warped reality bs that will be reversed in a year.
If i was ever given the chance to write 616 Spider-Man, the first things i would do were:
- Have Aunt May die of natural causes
- Have MJ and Peter to aknowledge they had a great love, but after so much BS, it's over and have them move on with their respective lives.
- Introduce a new cast of supporting characters for Peter/Spider-Man
- Bring some forgotten/rarely used villains to the front row and introduce a fresh new main big bad.

Please let Aunt May die in issue 900,I think Peter aka Spider-Man has died more times.
