Marvel Comics Is Officially Relaunching Ultimate Universe With A New Line Of Ongoing Titles

Marvel Comics has finally confirmed the return of the Ultimate Universe later this year, and it sounds like we're getting a contemporary take on Earth's Mightiest Heroes that will deliver some big surprises.

The Ultimate Universe was introduced in the early 2000s and put a contemporary spin on characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men, and The Avengers (who were renamed The Ultimates). Much of what we saw in those comics inspired the MCU, but the line eventually fell apart.

That can largely be blamed on Jeph Loeb's disastrous input, though later stories at least gave us Miles Morales!

Now, Marvel Comics has announced that a new Ultimate Universe will spin out of the pages of this month's Ultimate Invasion series. It's said that writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Bryan Hitch's new universe "will revolutionize the world outside your window."

After the Maker's desperate attempt to restore the Ultimate Universe unleashes massive, unintended consequences, a group of Marvel's heroes are caught in a war between timelines. As universes collide, the foundation of a new line of Ultimate Comics will be built.

It all begins with November's Ultimate Universe #1, a one-shot written by Hickman and illustrated by Stefano Caselli with a cover by Hitch. The comic promises to introduce readers to a new line that will be home to an array of brand-new hard-hitting series. A fresh start for a new generation, it's said that we'll see our favourite characters redefined for today's world.

"What made the Ultimate Universe originally really interesting was that it was a reflection of the world outside your window, in the moment that you were living in. What does it look like in the world we’re living in now?" Hickman says. "It’s kind of shocking how much the world has changed in that period of time. The idea of what it would be like to see the genesis of superheroes in a brand-new world is a really fascinating exercise."

"You don’t ever have to have read any of the Ultimate Universe to enjoy this," Hitch adds. "There’s some great comics in there, but this doesn’t need you to be familiar with that stuff. You just need to get in on page one and enjoy this because the story takes you where you need to go."

You can check out some brand new cover art below, but it's looking like the regular Marvel Universe's X-Men will be a big part of what's to come in Ultimate Invasion. It's going to be an exciting year, that's for sure...

They already restored the ultimate universe!

First Al Ewing restored it in Ultimates 2 and then Bendis showed more of it in Spider-Men II. It's there already! Wtf ever happened to continuity smh

@ObserverIO - they said the maker is trying to restore it. so whatever is there must not be to the maker's desires so he gonna screw stuff up trying to redo stuff.

I mean, that's a weird way to put it. The ultimate universe was made as if the stories started in 2000. It was no more the world outside your window than the standard 616 universe.

Unless twins having sex with each other is something you see everyday 🙄

@Origame - The Ultimate Universe was basically "The Boys" for it's own time.
It was turning superhero tropes on their own heads and focused on that kind of transgression.

Not very interesting to me. I prefer actual stories. And not Cultural Gotcha Tropes.
Same reason I have no interest in Boys. It's low hanging fruit, I think.

@TempleRod - ...no. that's what it became. The whole point is a modern take on the characters that doesn't have the baggage of decades of continuity.

@Origame - "The whole point is a modern take on the characters that doesn't have the baggage of decades of continuity."

This right here. This is 100% the reason they created the Ultimate Universe in 2000, and they even said it many many times leading up to its release.

Loeb. Stay away! I hope they bring back Millar. He's prob happier on doing his own thing though.

I feel if this is what Marvel are doing then it's likely the MCU is going to reboot after secret wars! To properly then introduce the new xmen.

Stab in the dark though.

@UniqNo - Really wish the MCU would reboot.

It's not my area, but I do like The X-Men a lot and I would rather see X-Men done without all the baggage that MCU brings along.

@TempleRod - I think that’s the plan post Secret Wars. It’s how they’ll fold the X-men into the MCU, after the incursion or whatever causes SW.

@TempleRod - Yeah, I feel it wouldn't make sense that there's all of a sudden mutants.

What I do think though, if they were to be brought in before a reset, is if the most powerful mind (Xavier) has kept them hidden from the non mutants. Kind of like Dr Stange making everyone forget Peter is Spider-Man.

Then some conflict with Scarlet comes about and she does a flip on that famous line "No more mutants" to somthing like "reveal all the mutants".

I want writing credits if that happens 🤣🤣
