Marvel Comics has confirmed Spider-Man: Reign 2 will be released in 2024, with Kaare Andrews returning to write and illustrate the sequel to what's been dubbed "the most notorious" Spidey story ever told.
In this week's Amazing Spider-Man #31/#925, a preview of the series offers a glimpse at what's to come...and it's pretty darn horrifying.
During Spider-Man: Reign, we learned that New York City's fantastic Mayor Ward had imprisoned and starved The Kingpin, visiting the emaciated Wilson Fisk once every year to gloat. This sneak peek shows the villain crawling through the bubble of Ward's building before encountering his old foe.
With that, he proceeds to eat the Mayor alive and is later shown massively obese and bathed in blood, presumably as a means of satisfying his hunger. He's now Mayor but Spider-Man, who appears to have lost his mind, is intent on taking him down.
We see the bearded, elderly web-slinger wearing a tattered costume and talking to the spectre of his dead wife, Mary Jane. As you'll no doubt recall, she died after years of having sex with Peter resulted in his radioactive body fluids giving her cancer.
It's intriguing to think about where this series will take us, especially after the first one killed many of the wall-crawler's greatest foes. However, there are plenty of other classic baddies who could return alongside Kingpin!
It won't be a title for kids, but exploring this twisted Marvel Universe's future should be a lot of fun and suitably f***ed up.
Spider-Man: Reign 2 doesn't currently have a confirmed release date but is coming in 2024.
