Tom Brevoort Reveals Whether Marvel Are Considering Their Own Comic Book Relaunch!

With the relaunch of the DC Universe off to a great start with critics and fans alike, Marvel's Senior Vice President of Publishing responds to a question asking whether or not they're planning something similar if it works out for DC...

Newsarama point out the following question posed to Tom Brevoort, along with his response. With many speculating that Marvel will be keeping a close eye on how DC does with their relaunch, it seems that the company do in fact have absolutely zero plans to head in that direction. In fact, the site quite rightly point out that they're currently doing the opposite, making the Marvel Universe ever more interconnected with events like Fear Itself, Schism and Avengers: The Children's Crusade all wrapping up at the same time in preparation for a big 2012 event.

If DC controls market and money profit for a full year, would that make the reboot successful? and would marvel consider its own reboot at that point?

You and folks like you seem to consider the only answer to a successful DC reboot to be a Marvel reboot. I don’t think that’s even in the top ten–not that I think we’re going to need to get there long-term in any case.

A few days ago, I actually ran a poll asking you guys what you would think of Marvel rebooting their entire line of characters, and the overwhelming response was that you don't want to see that happen. Well, luckily it seems as there are most definitely no plans for such an occurrence in the MU. Although you do have to imagine that the bigwigs at Marvel and Disney are keeping an eye on just how well this is working out for DC...

Marvel is smart. Very good choice not to follow in DC's footsteps

marvel has a more coherent continuity than dc. i don't want to see everything the civil war built get erased...dc probably needed it. marvel does not

I agree with Denn1s - DC needed this more than Marvel

X-Men would need it, too confusing and nearly every character has died and came back a few month later :/

DC needed to the reboot/relaunch.

DC just can't keep retconning their convoluted history with many big events like:

- Crisis of Infinite Earths
- Identity Crisis
- Final Crisis
- Zero Hours

They needed one GIANT event to do it.

Lets just say this. Marvel and DC copy each other all the time, they basically do the same stuff but now things will be a bit different.

If only Marvel could put out more good female oriented books than maybe I would consider reading from them more often.

This was needed by DC to gain back some of the market share Marvel has taken from DC over the years. Marvel is leading the pack and DC had to make a change to get people reading their comics again. Why change what is working, obviously Marvel is doing something right.

As long as they keep releasing good stories and their movies continue to kill at the box office Marvel will keep the lead.

DC needs to get its Movie and TV projects right and making money that will help too.

marvel don't need to do it at the moment, its shame dc reset action comics to issue 1,personally i would of let it reach 1000 & then maybe reset it to 1.

The market is saturated with Marvel right now it only makes sense their comics would be out selling DC. If TDKR and Man of Steel do well then you will see a rise in DC's comic sales. This relaunch is the beginning of DC's attempt to gain back its sales in comics. The success of the movies will help a lot too. But it all boils down to good stories if those aren't there this relaunch wont matter...

look,

DC can keep rebooting allllllllll they want but at the end of the day they are still DC.

If they want to change something it has to be more than another reboot. DC needs new characters. They fail and continue to fail bc most of their characters are shit.

Maybe they should reboot it since Joe Queseda [frick]ed everything up with "One More Day". That could mean Peter and M.J. could still be married.

@ froggy

to be the first american comic to reach 1000 issues is something special to me,how many other books will ever reach that number.

action comics 1000 could of been the end of that volume of books & action comics 1 could of been the start of volume 2 & a new era for dc.

The DC reboots works for me. I've always wanted to get into that universe, now I finally can.

And in the end, it's about the quality of the stories, isn't it? So people who've been reading DC before shouldn't be angry- they enjoyed those stories, now we can enjoy the new ones together.

As for Marvel- Tthey will do it, eventually. It's a matter of time. And they will do it soon if they see it made DC more successful.

Exactly see Marvel is a boys club, If they would stop that way of thinking become more open-minded about their female characters, then I would welcome that with open arms.

One thing about DC is that they've always been more open-minded with female characters. Lets hope both companies improve on their faults in the near future for both our sakes.

I have a feeling thats why most comic companies do that so they don't have a 1000th issue, its sounds stupid i know but look at the facts... uncanny x-men is starting at nummber 1 hulk started at #1. Everytime a comic reaches a certain number they go back to #1, its very annoying.

@dnno1 thanks for pointing that out, people seem to forget. IMHO thats what DC should have done, created an "Ultimate Universe". But i believe the relaunch has more to do with Supermans legal struggles and was needed to keep things going.

i know what you mean it what annoys me the most about marvel, how many times as moon knight been rebooted?captain america, wolverine & daredevil are the same as well they get a new comic reboot every couple of years.

@Solomon- The X-Men comics certainly need something. Maybe a reboot, entirely new writers, and use of less characters would be a HUGE step in the right direction.

DC didn't need this reboot because of all their other reboots. Adding one more reboot to the long list of reboots doesn't help anything.....and yes this is no less a reboot that Crisis was. It's just more of the same people. That's the real problem......too damned many reboots. That's why Marvel doesn't need one. They learned their lesson once already. They tried this same damned thing with Heroes Reborn and it ended up the same way DC's new reboot will end up: being negated and wiped from the canon as if it never happened.....because of its EPIC FAIL!!!

Overall, Marvel has always had more interesting characters and more interesting storylines than DC. They don't need a reboot.
niknik
niknik - 8/31/2011, 10:34 AM
Marvel learned from that, creating the Ultimate universe which coexists with their original universe. No turning away longtime readers, just adding younger readers with the new line of books.

You would think DC would have picked up on that. Guess they're just not that smart.
bcmerr01
bcmerr01 - 8/31/2011, 10:35 AM
Realizing they have 60 years of stories that a lot of the franchises are built on, I can't understand why they don't compile the seminal moments and arcs of those franchises into a historical compendium that would bring new readers up to date.

It would definitely have to be installed monthly because a single issue would be massive, and it would obviously have to be something more than a clip show, but with DC relaunching their properties, it's an option they no longer have and it seems Marvel could really pull off something special.

DC relaunched and shed it's history, I think Marvel could embrace theirs by making it easier for new readers to understand what's going on now and how everything fits in.

@Marvel72 I think they should have just continued Action Comics, and maybe Detective Comics too. So many people are pissed about the reboot, they could have kept Action starring the pre-Flashpoint Superman and Detective starring pre-Flashpoint Batman, to keep the old audience happy. I mean I'd rather a continuation of the pre-Flashpoint Superman and Batman than at least two titles each starring the new Superman with a Superman-esque costume or a tacky t-shrit and the Batman who runs a Robin intern programme.

Action Comics #1000 could've been something amazing, and keeping both Action and Detective as pre-Flashpoint comics with their old numbering, they could have kept all the fans happy. I mean does the new Batman really need three ongoing series? Does the new Superman really need two?
