ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Design Sheet Reveals Shocking Peter Parker Twist In Upcoming Comic Book Relaunch

A new design sheet for Marvel Comics' Ultimate Spider-Man confirms a big Peter Parker twist which will make this version of the wall-crawler wholly different from his amazing counterpart on Earth-616.

Writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Marco Checchetto's bold new take on Ultimate Spider-Man is shaping up to be full of surprises, and when it launches next January, it will star a very different Peter Parker. He'll be an older, wiser web-slinger who balances his superhero duties with his responsibilities as a husband and a father.

Yes, much to the delight of many fans, Peter will be married to Mary Jane Watson...in an alternate reality. The new Ultimate Universe was created by The Maker and thanks to his intervention, it looks vastly different from both Earth-616 and Earth-1610.

Earth-6160 has proved to be wholly unique and not the reintroduction of the classic Ultimate line most fans were hoping to see more of. However, there's still plenty to be excited about as the relaunch will kick off with Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, and Ultimate Black Panther (we're expecting The Ultimates to assemble somewhere down the line).

Back to Peter Parker, and a new design sheet shared by artist Marco Checchetto reveals a big twist we know many of you have speculated about in recent weeks.

As is evident from a sketch of Peter going from looking like a regular dad to a jacked-up superhero, this version of the character is indeed going to gain his powers as an adult, not a teenager. That means neither of his children will have inherited superpowers. He'll also have to balance being a regular thirtysomething (or fortysomething) husband and dad with becoming a web-slinging superhero.

That's not a story we've ever seen told before, so it's an undeniably intriguing development and direction to take the character in. Talking at last month's New York Comic-Con, Hickman described the title as "a bit of a Peter B. Parker situation," referencing Jake Johnson's Spider-Man from Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse.

"Meet Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson - Mr. & Mrs. Parker," reads the official description for the series. "They’re one of pop culture’s most iconic couples, and now readers will see them stronger than ever in the Ultimate Universe."

Take a closer look at Checchetto's design sheet for Ultimate Spider-Man #1 below. Are you excited for a fresh take on Spidey next year?

With the thumbnail I kinda expected the shocker to be that he got a beard. But him being an adult getting his powers is actually quite intriguing. Not shocking though

This concept already interests me far more than what Amazing Spider-man has become since One More Day. It's an original concept that tries to explore new grounds (Peter gaining powers as an adult, what his early adult life has been since and what happened to Ben Parker), and I've been yearning for the return of a more "grown-up" Peter Parker (rather than the "Peter Pan" Parker I grew tired of).

So to continue the strange tradition of tormenting Peter Parker, they decide to give him his powers at a time where he's a family and career man, as if those stresses alone don't pile up his hectic schedule??

Prepare for the kids to go from happy to resentful and the wife to dump him.

And it's such a cop out to give him a family in a alternate reality instead of 616. Marvel really wants to keep Spider-Pan going.

Jonathan Hickman's a good writer so hopefully this will lead to something promising.

As a Spidey fan, I think I always want to see the character evolve, to become an adult, and we have Miles around to keep the “Young Spider” vibe. Keep the “master-apprentice” thing about Peter and Miles and thats It

The suit design makes me think of the Japanese spiderman

Maybe this will be good. But then I loved the more mature 80s' Spidey who was always broke and had to wash his suit at a laundromat, not the eternal teenager we always get nowadays.

So I don’t hate this and I think it’s very intriguing. Especially if Ben died when he was younger. It begs the question how does he learn the “With great power” lesson.

That being said, Marvel STILL won’t listen to fans. They won’t give us Peter a happily married man in 616, but they say “look look we’re doing it in Ultimate!” But the point is we just don’t want a happily married Peter.

We want to follow the 15 year old kid who got bit by the spider and watch him become an adult after close to 2 decades of hard lessons and losses and how that specific Peter juggles being a happily married man with a family while being a superhero. That’s what many fans have wanted for years, but Marvel has to keep him eternally Peter Pan.

Intersting take, but showing how he matured by having the powers from a young age would have been better character development imo.

Phew. I thought that shocking twist was that he was going to be gay and married to Flash Thompson.
