David Slade On His Vision For DAREDEVIL; Says The Yellow Suit Would Have Been Featured

Slade, who was attached to direct a Daredevil flick for Fox before the film rights reverted back to Marvel, discusses what he had planned for the movie (which would have been set in the 70s) and reveals that Matt Murdock would've donned the original yellow suit.

Back in 2011, director David Slade (30 Days Of Night, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) was hired by 20th Century Fox to helm a new Daredevil movie, which would have been based on Frank Miller's "Born Again" story arc. He remained attached to the project for over a year, with little development beyond a couple of writers working on the script. Last summer, it was confirmed that Slade had dropped out, due to his wanting to shoot NBC's Hannibal around the same time Fox wanted to film Daredevil in order to keep the rights. As we all should know, Joe Carnahan (The A-Team, The Grey) went on to take the director's reigns, and even posted a sizzle reel of what he had in mind. However, the Daredevil film rights finally reverted back to Marvel Studios last fall, but what Carnahan had in mind certainly seemed intriguing.

Speaking with Film School Rejects while promoting Hannibal, Slade looked back on his take on the Marvel Comics character, saying that it was similar to what Carnahan had in mind (dark, Frank Miller-esque, set in the 70s). "[I saw it as] really complex and exciting. It was complicated [Laughs], and in the most unimaginable Fox way possible. I was really, really excited about it . . . It’s funny, I remember Joe Carnahan went after it hard when the rights were about to go. He cut together that thing that was great and exciting, but it was kind of sad, in a way, because everything in that trailer we had attempted to do [Laughs]. Every single thing." He then goes into what we could've expected from the story, including the role of the Irish mafia and the inclusion of the famous yellow suit (which was Matt Murdock's original costume when the Man Without Fear debuted in 1964). "It’s in the 70s, Kingpin is going through New York dealing with the Irish mafia, and there’s Daredevil in the yellow suit. It was all there! You know, it’s a big studio film and it’s tougher…there are certain people who are really good at that, and I hope to be really good at that. I will continue to try my best."

You can watch Carnahan's Daredevil sizzle reel below. Would you have liked to see the Man Without Fear's next big screen outing like this?

Disney/Marvel will never have the balls to do what Slade/Carnahan were planning. Its just going to end up as some glossy family fun movie with no real substance.

It would make sense. Like Carnaham said Bronx is not this kinda place it was years ago. Giuliani changed this place.
Either you set the movie years before, or just find another another place where Matt Murdock was raised.

I'm hoping Marvel gives either Slade or Carnahan a call, because their approach to the character sounds really fantastic. It's been said before, but a 70s setting for Daredevil makes the most sense, as Hell's Kitchen is actually a really nice neighborhood now. Also, I really want to see what the yellow suit would look like.

I honestly would rather see daredevil as a tv series. Not that I'm against a DD movie or anything, he's my third favourite superhero and second favourite marvel character so anything DD outside of comics is going to get me excited but the nature of the character and his stories are much more suited towards tv than movies. If you read all the important stuff for DD (miller, smith, bendis, brubaker and waid) they all play out like a tv show, especially miller and bendis' runs.

Wouldn't it be hard to do a modern day version of Daredevil? Hells Kitchen is actually a really nice area now, they Daily Show and Colbert Report studios are there.

Well maybe now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they can make Hell's Kitchen seedy again – how? – by explained that it was a hard hit area during the Chitauri invasion. No? Anyways, it would have been interesting to see a period piece Daredevil film. Who knows, maybe Marvel Studios will try it. As for Fox, I'm telling you guys, between X-Men: Days Of Future Past and The Man Without Fear planned for the 1970s, I think the Fox Shared Universe will be entirely a period piece. The Nixon era Space Race period would definitely benefit the Fantastic Four reboot.

I'm telling you, David Slade directing a DareDevil movie would've been perfect. I love Slade and I think he would've really done DareDevil justice on the big screen.

70's? no thanks. i wanna see DD take place within the same time frame as the rest of whatever cinematic universe he belongs to. good thing Marvel got the rights back. but then again, from the way they appear to be fuccing up CATWS and GotG i might be speakin to soon.

Thank goodness that film wasn't made, that yellow suit in the 70's would've been cheesy. Daredevil deserves to have more of Christopher Nolan Dark Knight Trilogy feel to it. Hopefully Marvel will do the character justice on the big screen.

FOX shouldve just starting shooting a DD film before it expired. They couldve just filmed a couple low cost shots while getting the script ready. I would rather have lost that money before burning all the money spent on rights.

But it wouldve been better to do a series like Arrow with DD. DD like Arrow is more suited for a series with long plotlines instead of a 90-120 minute story.

And if you love DD then you should want a series also. A series gives you 22 hours of entertainment a year. A film series gives you six-8 hours per decade.

Marvel purists got their wish.

Daredevil is back and will most likely stay dead for a decade at least.

So hooray, instead of a talented film maker making a dark Daredevil movie, we're either getting no film for a while or like others have said, a toned down version.

Thank God they don't have X-Men or Spider-Man

I like how @thewonderer is acting like he cares about the character.

FOX had their chance. Marvel even wanted to give them more time to make it. Instead, FOX let it revert.

man, there's no crime in Hell's Kitchen anymore, except for an occasional purse snatching -- and that's man-purse snatching. Not sure how they'd pull it off without setting it in a different time period.

@ JerryBlake and Nailbiter111

First off, if you go back just 20 years, Alphabet City, all the way through Hell's Kitchen and up into The Bronx were still pretty damn rough around the edges and not yet remotely touched by Giuliani (who'd only just become Mayor in '93).

Ignoring the fact that Daredevil takes place in a fictional version of NYC that doesn't have to adhere to every detail of reality, if something happens in the next couple of years and Matt Murdoch is a respectable 30 or so in whatever new film happens, that's stll A LOT of being shaped by his neighborhood before the gentrification. Given that I grew up in New York and lived through that period, I know of what I speak.

Now as for the present and the "cleaner" NYC, that's kind of where the fiction comes in. The real world doesn't have a Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin or the other comic book crime lords in it's NYC. The world of Daredevil does and that's the difference. It doesn't have to absolutely be one or the other in order for Daredevil to work.

@Batmaniac

you will know it when Iron Man 3 will arrive. It's like a test:
can Marvel go with more serious tone for their movies or not.
Next one will be CA2. Political thriller ? Sounds interesting.
More serious.
