UPDATE: James Gunn has chimed in and it looks like we may have to discount Nexus Point News scoops moving forward...
According to Nexus Point News, DC Studios has turned to Andy Muschietti (IT, The Flash) and Rodo Sayagues (Evil Dead, Alien: Romulus) to write the screenplay for The Brave and the Bold.
Muschietti remains attached to direct and, interestingly, James Gunn appears to have turned to two filmmakers with serious horror experience for this reboot. Grant Morrison's Batman and Robin run included scary elements, including Professor Pyg, the twisted Simon Hurt, and Man-Bat.
Sayagues' other credits include Don't Breathe and its sequel, while Muschietti is currently working on Max's IT spin-off, Welcome to Derry.
The site adds that, "The Brave and the Bold is looking to start production in 2025. This could set it up for a Summer 2027 release." A horror-tinged approach to the Dark Knight would definitely differentiate the DCU's Bruce Wayne from previous iterations and Matt Reeves' The Batman franchise.
This news hasn't been confirmed so we'll keep you updated if and when the trades chime in. Many fans remain concerned with Gunn choosing Muschietti to helm The Brave and the Bold, particularly after watching The Flash last year.
However, while that movie's tone was a jumbled mess, he may well be the right man for the job if we're getting a scarier take on Batman.
Talking at the start of 2023 about DC Studios' plans for The Brave and the Bold, Gunn said: "This is the introduction of the DCU's Batman. This is the story of Damian Wayne, who is Batman's actual son who we didn't know existed for the first eight to 10 years of his life. He was raised as a little murderer and assassin. He's a little son of a bitch. He's my favorite Robin."
"It's based on the Grant Morrison comic book's run, which is one of my favorite Batman runs, and we are putting that all together right now."
DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran added, "And this is obviously a feature film, and it's going to feature other members of the extended 'Bat-family', just because we feel like they've been left out of the Batman stories in the theater for far too long."
The Brave and the Bold's story will revolve around Bruce Wayne training his son, Damian, as Robin, adapting elements from Morrison and Frank Quitely's critical acclaimed Batman and Robin.
Based on recent comments from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, the Caped Crusader is still a long way from being cast in the DCU.
The Brave and The Bold still doesn't have a confirmed release date.
