Could Black Adam Replace Superman As The DCEU's Lead Hero?

The Justice League and Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam have been spotted at CCXP! Could the banner be hinting at the new hierarchy of power within the DC Universe?

There is still plenty of mystery surrounding Henry Cavill's return to the big screen after the Man of Steel was last seen in 2018 following Justice League. Cavill announced his return as Superman shortly after Dwayne "The Rock" Jonhnson's Black Adam, where the two shared a post-credit scene. You know, when Smallville's farm boy visited Black Adam and stated "... Black Adam. We should talk." The Rock teased the moment through his online social media presence, not to mention the little jabs throughout the film.

Most recently the pair can be seen hanging from a banner at São Paulo, Brazil, Comic Con Experience (CCXP). Alongside them are several members of the Justice League, including Jason Mamoa's Aquaman, Robert Pattinson's Batman, and gal Gadot's Wonder Woman. A great display of the Detective Comics Extended Universe's (DCEU) recent expansions and accomplishments.

The banner had lead to speculation regarding the hierarchy of the DECU moving forward as Black Adam is seen in the middle of the group, in what could be assumed as a leadership role... Recent reports say that Dwayne Johnson has his sights set on Black Adam being the spotlight of the Justice League moving forward. Though if anyone has been listening to what's coming out of DC with their new leadership, that may not be the case. As we've seen, James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over as the co-heads for all of DC Studios and they are mapping out the next 10 years of DC Entertainment with a merging of the universes in several DC projects.

This could be a turning of the tides for the Justice League as leadership shifts... It may be hopeful thinking, but perhaps Johnson and Cavill can be the on-screen Gunn and Safran and be co-leads. Some would say there's a balance between Black Adam's hastiness and Superman's compassion. It bears mentioning that without Dwayne Johnson we may not have seen the return of Henry Cavill in the role.

Pattinson's Batman is also hanging from the same banner! Could this just be a multi-verse nod, or could we also expect The Batman cinematic universe to be bridged into Gunn and Safran's new DCEU?

There's bound to be more information released as the DCEU expands with Shazam!: Fury of the Gods landing in theaters in March, The Flash in June, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom rounding out 2023 when it hits in December. This doesn't take into account the other hereos appearing down the line such as Blue Beetle.

What do you think the new co-leads in DC Studios have in store for us? Sound off in the comments area below!

I mean… Superman was never really the face of the Dceu. That being said after black adams box office performance I doubt the rock will be the face of Gunn DCU

@Taonrey - how was superman not the face of the dceu? It started with man of steel, bvs was made as a direct sequel to man of steel, suicide squad was a response to superman dying, and justice league was partially about bringing him back. Literally half of the films when they were still planning on a connected universe had superman in a major role. And outside of wonder woman and aquaman the rest reference him and rely on him for their plots.

@Origame - idk I guess when I think face I think most popular character. Warner didn't even want to make a sequel to his movie

@Taonrey - I mean, he's the one character people wanted to return. Who do you think was the most popular?

Ehhh, I dunno. I feel like this banner was made MONTHS ago at minimum, if not last year... Way before James Gunn officially hopped on.

It'd be really great to see more of Black Adam, but based on the box office results, I doubt he'll be leading anything anytime soon. 😥

The DCEU is officially dead and no. Obviously Black Adam could not replace [frick]ing Superman as the core of the DC universe. How is that even a question?

@Drace24 - Have you seen the 3 disastrous DCEU films that featured this version of Superman? There's your answer as to why this is an actual question.

@VileBlood - Again, the DCEU is dead. We won't see this Superman again. But A Superman should definitely be at the center of the new DCU, unless you want to tell me there is any chance they would actually replace the most iconic superhero in existance with Black Adam and everyone would just be fine with it.

I doubt Black Adam will be the ‘face’ of the DCU. Gunn knows better than to just bank on a recognisable star like The Rock to create a brand. He’s all about characters and not promoting movie stars. Also, given that Black Adam didn’t exactly light the box office on fire, putting him front and centre in the DCU wouldn’t really be of much benefit. I think he’s at the centre of that banner purely because he’s the most recent DCU character to have a movie so they’re still trying to promote it.

There’s been talk that the main strategy is to rebuild the brand starting with the main trilogy of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman and then to fill it out with the rest of the roster. I think this makes the most sense.

Weird how DC has been riding the comic book name recognition money train for so long and then decide to absolutely hammer a character into pop culture that only super niche comicbook fans really like or even know of. Power of The Rock I guess.

The DCU doesn't have a Superman that can lead so that's the first problem they need to fix. REBOOTSUPERMAN!

Please stop calling it the DCEU...and nobody ever called it the Detective Comics Extended Universe 🤦🏼

@TheShape9859 - I think it's a good way of dividing between the other dc films and the new Gunn films.

I have no desire to see a Supervillain lead the Justice League, so I really hope this won't happen, but with Dwayne's ego I sadly could see this happen.

After how hard it bombed? yeah, NO.

The Rock is there because he is mega popular in Brasil, just like DC is more popular than Marvel there.

Ugh, this site is so trash sometimes. WB has a banner clearly just showing off some of their DC movies and CBM rushes off to write "WOW, IS BLACK ADAM REPLACING SUPERMAN AS THE LEADER OF THE JUSTICE LEAGUE??","WB CONFIRMING PATTINSON BATMAN JOINING THE JUSTICE LEAGUE???". Garbage tier.

No way Gunn puts Johnson at the head of anything. Johnson has already gone through his test with BA and if he's unsuccessful with his own movie can't lead the wider franchise. Especially as a hero. BA is not even big in the comics anyway.

The Rock is the biggest international star. Of course marketing would put him upfront

If this is even being considered at ANY table at any board meeting then they need to just end the DCEU right now and call it a day
