There is still plenty of mystery surrounding Henry Cavill's return to the big screen after the Man of Steel was last seen in 2018 following Justice League. Cavill announced his return as Superman shortly after Dwayne "The Rock" Jonhnson's Black Adam, where the two shared a post-credit scene. You know, when Smallville's farm boy visited Black Adam and stated "... Black Adam. We should talk." The Rock teased the moment through his online social media presence, not to mention the little jabs throughout the film.
Most recently the pair can be seen hanging from a banner at São Paulo, Brazil, Comic Con Experience (CCXP). Alongside them are several members of the Justice League, including Jason Mamoa's Aquaman, Robert Pattinson's Batman, and gal Gadot's Wonder Woman. A great display of the Detective Comics Extended Universe's (DCEU) recent expansions and accomplishments.
The banner had lead to speculation regarding the hierarchy of the DECU moving forward as Black Adam is seen in the middle of the group, in what could be assumed as a leadership role... Recent reports say that Dwayne Johnson has his sights set on Black Adam being the spotlight of the Justice League moving forward. Though if anyone has been listening to what's coming out of DC with their new leadership, that may not be the case. As we've seen, James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over as the co-heads for all of DC Studios and they are mapping out the next 10 years of DC Entertainment with a merging of the universes in several DC projects.
This could be a turning of the tides for the Justice League as leadership shifts... It may be hopeful thinking, but perhaps Johnson and Cavill can be the on-screen Gunn and Safran and be co-leads. Some would say there's a balance between Black Adam's hastiness and Superman's compassion. It bears mentioning that without Dwayne Johnson we may not have seen the return of Henry Cavill in the role.
Pattinson's Batman is also hanging from the same banner! Could this just be a multi-verse nod, or could we also expect The Batman cinematic universe to be bridged into Gunn and Safran's new DCEU?
There's bound to be more information released as the DCEU expands with Shazam!: Fury of the Gods landing in theaters in March, The Flash in June, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom rounding out 2023 when it hits in December. This doesn't take into account the other hereos appearing down the line such as Blue Beetle.
