Warner Bros. finally gave in and agreed to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut of Justice League back in March 2021, but a desire for more and the open-ended nature of the DC movie simply gave way to the #RestoreTheSnyderVerse movement.
Since then, many DCEU fans have pushed for Zack Snyder to be given free rein, going so far as to suggest the studio should sell the SnyderVerse to Netflix (a proposition which makes absolutely zero sense). Now, DC Studios is rebooting the entire franchise - mostly - as the DCU and there doesn't appear to be room for the Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice helmer.
Back in February, Gunn took to Twitter to respond to the #SellTheSnyderVerseToNetflix hashtag by saying, "I have to say, this has got to be the wackiest hashtag ever since 1) Netflix hasn’t expressed any such interest (although we’ve discussed other stuff) & 2) Zack hasn’t expressed any interest & seems to be happy doing what he’s doing (and, yes, we too have talked)."
The filmmaker later revealed that Snyder had "contacted me to express his support about my choices" and suggested he was happy doing his own thing with Netflix and his burgeoning Rebel Moon franchise.
However, in April, Snyder made it clear he would be open to working on a DC project again when he said, "Would I be interested in whatever medium or whatever way these ideas would be made? Of course, I would! Yeah, and in the meantime we forge ahead and we do what we do."
A fan recently attempted to call Gunn out for not rehiring Snyder by repeatedly spamming him on Threads. Understandably at the end of his tether, the Superman: Legacy director responded by bluntly saying, "I would think it was obvious that I meant Zack hadn’t expressed any interest to ME in our discussions, so you can quit spamming this on every single post!"
So, there you have it; as of now, there are no plans for Snyder to be part of the DCU. This isn't overly surprising, though we can't help but think Gunn would be wise to get his fellow filmmaker to release his Justice League sequels as a comic book or animated feature.
With that, the story would be concluded and the hashtags might finally die a death. However, with David Ayer strongly hinting Gunn has promised to one day #ReleaseTheAyerCut of Suicide Squad, the DC Studios co-CEO could probably do without even more DCEU baggage weighing him down.
