Karen Gillan put herself on the map with Doctor Who as Amy Pond. However, she later stepped onto an even larger stage - literally if you count a memorable Hall H appearance that saw the Scottish actress reveal her bald head to fans - after joining the MCU as Nebula in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy.
The daughter of Thanos was initially portrayed as a villain but later had a change of heart and was less of an antagonist by the time Vol. 2 rolled around. Eventually joining the team, she became a full-fledged Guardian in Avengers: Infinity War and a hero during the five years half the universe was Blipped.
We don't know what exactly the future holds in store for Nebula beyond last year's Vol. 3, but the threequel delivered what could be viewed as a definitive end to the character's story. Since then, Gillan has said on multiple occasions that she's open to joining the DCU.
James Gunn left Marvel Studios behind to take charge of DC Studios and helm Superman and has admitted on several occasions that he'd like to bring many of the Guardians into the DCU. As for Gillan, a fan-favourite choice to play Poison Ivy, she's just waiting on the filmmaker to find the right role for her.
"James Gunn is one of my favorite people on the planet, let alone filmmakers, so I would love to work with him again. Of course, I would, and I would do it at the drop of a hat. I also feel like I shouldn’t pigeonhole myself by trying to cast myself in a character. I think he knows better. So, if it ever happens, I feel like he’s gonna choose the right character for me."
"I’ve learned so much from him. He’s an extraordinary director. He’s actually such a natural leader. He’s gonna keep you on track when you try these big swings. He also really embraces those swings, and embraces improv, and thinks of improv and feeds it to you in the moment over a microphone. I love working like that because it gets me out of my head."
"And then, his shots are all incredible. He’s got that balance of it looking really cool, but also being really actor-focused. Sometimes it’s one or the other, but he’s got both, which is really, really exciting."
Marvel Studios will no doubt be keen to keep Gillan in the MCU, though, and she most recently reprised the role of Nebula for a Blade Runner-inspired episode of What If...? during the show's second season.
"For Nebula, I’m enjoying seeing her take care of other people," Gillan previously said of her hopes for the character beyond Vol. 3. "I think part of the healing process is eventually getting to the point where you can help other people heal. And so I’d like to see that in Nebula’s future."
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ended by introducing a new team led by Rocket and by teasing plans for the "Legendary Star-Lord" on Earth. We've yet to learn what's planned for them, though a role in the upcoming Avengers movies seems likely.
Who do you think she could play in DC Studios' DCU?
