DEADPOOL 2 Writers Reveal That Yukio Isn't Actually Surge...She's A Character From THE WOLVERINE

Heading into Deadpool 2, we all assumed that Negasonic Teenage Warhead's girlfriend was Surge but the movie's writers have now confirmed that she's actually a character who has been seen on screen before.

Shioli Kutsuna's Yukio is a minor highlight of Deadpool 2 as she quickly takes to the Merc with the Mouth and is revealed to be Negasonic Teenage Warhead's girlfriend. However, while we all assumed that the actress - who is credited as "Yukio" - is a slightly different take on Surge, it turns out that writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick actually based her on a Chris Claremont creation.

There's only one Yukio in the X-Men comic books and she was a Japanese assassin who actually showed up in The Wolverine back in 2013. However, seeing as that movie is no longer canon after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, the scribes seemed okay with rebooting her for Deadpool 2

"That’s not right," Reese responded when asked about the theory Yukio is really Surge. "She’s a super-minor character. The character’s name is actually Yukio, an assassin — but who’s an adult assassin, so we just aged her down. She’s such a minor character, we thought we could pretty much get away with anything." A minor character? That's definitely debatable, especially after Rila Fukushima played a far more comic accurate version of the hero who has actually been a big part of Wolverine's life.

"Shioli's amazing," Reese added, "I really think we have to do her more justice going forward — not as though we did her injustice, but she just didn’t have a lot of screen time. I’d love to explore the Yukio character more." Whether or not she'll factor into X-Force remains to be seen but fans have responded positively to Yukio despite the fact she's been changed a great deal from page to screen.

Is she though?

@MrBillCipher - Besides being turned into a lesbian for her 2nd on screen adaptation...I would say No. Yukio was only in Frank Millers Wolverine comics as an assasin who had feelings for Wolverine. She was never a mutant or had any powers, so the source ends there. She was the red haired lady who found wolverine in James Mangold's The Wolverine film.

Not sure if negasonic teenage warhead is in x force or future films, so it is all up in the air. They can make up something random, but once disney acquires Fox, who knows if any of this is canon anymore.

Reynolds said he wasnt sure if there will be a DP 3 because any film after X force is not guaranteed to happen anymore.

It's funny that you think that's a possibility.

I would just retcon her a Surge. (Who is called Yukio)

While obviously history has been changed, and thus the Yukio we saw in The wolverine could have been erased, this just seem like a huge departure; and feels really pointless.

Yes Colousus is Russian and vislaully looks different now, but he still retained his metal power. The only thing that connects the 2013 Yokio (who could see the future) and this version is that they are Japanese.

@StormXmen123 - Yeah, I'll just keep pretending she's surge. Mental gymnast abilities level up, thanks 2 decades of FOx-Men.

@parkerray - unless they ouright give her a distinct code name (I think they will just keep calling her Yukio; because on the "hi Yukio" joke).
I'm just pretending she is Surge.

When she showed up and they called her Yukio, that was something that kinda threw me off while I was watching it. I kept thinking “Is this supposed to be the same character from The Wolverine?”, and then I remembered that this movie is part of a franchise where continuity is nonexistent and just stopped thinking about it. Cute girl though, and the few scenes she had were amusing.

@BlackBeltJones - Kinda disrespectful to the her role in the film, the actress and the film. I still mantain wolverine was one of the few good fox films.

Still, they have most likley retconned it.

I’m familiar with the actress so I know her background but for some reason with the dialogue they gave her I thought she couldn’t speak English. She did have a longer line during the credits scene though.

It's funny how all timeline issues are answered with "DOFP man who gives a [frick]?". I do like that movie though.
