In Deadpool & Wolverine's latest trailer, Wade Wilson encounters a Logan Variant who "let down his entire world," according to the TVA.
This isn't Logan's version of the hero, though we suppose it's possible when the movie was set in 2029. However, as compelling a theory as that may be, it also wouldn't make a ton of sense when Professor X's inadvertent massacre of the X-Men took place in 2028!
A major retcon would be required to make it so another tragedy befell the clawed mutant before the events of Logan (which, you know, he never mentioned), leaving us to believe Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy's repeated claims that they're leaving it well alone are true.
With that in mind, what did Wolverine do?
Until we get further context, it's tricky to definitively answer that question; for example, while the Merc with the Mouth believes this Wolverine is a member of the X-Men, what if he never joined the team in his reality? Again, we don't believe that's the case as the fact something traumatic happened seems to be the basis of why this Variant is the way he is.
He doesn't consider himself a hero and seems to be hated by the general public if the reception he gets in that bar is any indication. That could just be because he's a mutant, of course.
There's even a sequence in the trailer which, if recent rumours are to be believed, sees him forced to relive the death of his fellow X-Men. How did they die? Well, Cassandra Nova being responsible would be a neat way to tie things together; either she orchestrated an attack similar to the one of Genosha in X-Men '97 (which was the case in the comics) or perhaps we need to look at Old Man Logan for clues.
Deadpool & Wolverine is already taking some cues from Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's comic with the giant remains of Ant-Man and we'd be shocked if the movie doesn't feature something like this...
Fooled by Mysterio into believing he was slicing his way through a group of supervillains after they conquered America, Wolverine inadvertently kills his fellow X-Men. In the case of Deadpool & Wolverine, we'd put money on Nova being behind that, even if Logan didn't know it before now.
Either way, the X-Men are dead, and while that might limit the number of cameos we see, not only does this give Wolvie the chance to find redemption by saving Deadpool's friends, but it allows Hugh Jackman to take the character to new places (Logan similarities aside).
With no reason to return to his world, this might also be exactly the Wolverine that Marvel Studios needs for Earth-616 ahead of Avengers: Secret Wars...
