Disney has officially released five new Alice In Wonderland character pictures with a brief synopsis for each.

These are direct from Yahoo Movies.

UNDERLAND, says screenwriter Linda Woolverton, is a part of the earth. "But it lies somewhere far beneath our world. The only way to get there is to fall down a rabbit hole." It is the same fantastical land that Alice visited as a child, but she misheard the word "Underland" and thought they said "Wonderland." Alice, now age 19, heads back down the rabbit hole and though she has no memory of her previous adventures in Underland, she is reunited with its inhabitants, including a swashbuckling Dormouse, an off-his-rocker Mad Hatter, a grinning Cheshire Cat, a caterpillar called Absolem, a beautiful White Queen and her spiteful older sister the Red Queen. "Time has passed," says Woolverton. "The Red Queen rules the whole land. It's under her thumb. And the people of Underland need Alice." Underland has come upon hard times since the malevolent Red Queen took over the throne. It is, however, a truly wonderful land, which might explain why the girl who mistook it for Wonderland has been called upon to help return it to its glory. But, says Woolverton, "Underland has always been Underland since the Beginning, no matter who sits on the throne. It will remain Underland until the End."

ALICE (Mia Wasikowska) is a 19-year-old woman contemplating her future. An independent soul, she feels trapped in the narrow-minded views of women in aristocratic Victorian London. Alice Kingsleigh is uncertain how to balance her dreams with other people's expectations. Following the death of her beloved father, she attends a garden party with her mother and sister, although, unbeknownst to her, it's been planned as her engagement party. Just as the arrogant and dull Hamish Ascot proposes to her, Alice spots a White Rabbit wearing a waistcoat and pocket watch scurrying across the grounds. She rushes off after the furry fellow, tumbling down a rabbit hole and into Underland, a place she first visited as a child (and called Wonderland) - though she has no memory of it or its inhabitants. Alice nevertheless reunites with her childhood friends, including Absolem the caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, and of course, the Mad Hatter - and seeks her true destiny. "In the beginning, Alice is very awkward and uncomfortable in her skin," Wasikowska says. "So her experience in Underland is about reconnecting with herself and finding she has the strength to be more self-assured in figuring out what she wants."

THE MAD HATTER (Johnny Depp) doesn't just wear his heart on his sleeve - his ever-changing moods are quite literally reflected in his face and his attire. He's been anxiously awaiting Alice's return and is, arguably, her one true friend, believing in her when nobody else does. He is fearless, going to great lengths to protect her at his own risk. Once the proud hat maker for the White Queen, the Hatter has been affected by mercury poisoning, an unfortunate side effect of the hat-making process, and isn't altogether well.

CHESSUR, THE CHESHIRE CAT (voice of Stephen Fry) is a dapper tabby with the ability to appear and disappear. He is all calm, casual sensuality with a seductive grin that masks his cowardice. It's the cat's disembodied head that first appears to Alice in Tulgey Wood after she's been attacked by the vicious Bandersnatch. He offers to purify the gashes on her arm by licking them. Alice declines, although she allows him to lead her to the Hatter's Tea Party where the Hatter blames him for deserting them on the day the Red Queen seized control of Underland. Using his skills and the Hatter's coveted top hat, Chessur later finds a way to redeem himself.

THE MARCH HARE (voice of Paul Whitehouse) hosts the Mad Hatter's Tea Parties at his Hare House. Paranoid, anxious and slightly insane, he constantly wrings his paws and ears and has a thing for tossing teapots and other items. He has a penchant for cooking and is one of the few Underland inhabitants to escape the Red Queen's clutches all together.

This movie looks captivating, to say the least.

I applied for a job at Disney Game Studios and they now need me to write the brief for the new Alice in Wonderland console game, so it's good to see some new pics. I love that Stephen Fry is the Cheshire Cat. QI rocks.

@ brazilianbatman

Have you read the comic Fables? If not I suggest you read it. Very dope take on fairy tales. If you get to volume 4 your mouth will drop. Its one of the best stories that I've ever read...

i think its funny that so many people are complaining about how "weird" this looks. go watch alice in wonderland, or read the novel. that shit is weird as hell!!!! even the disney movie is weird when you get past the family style animation. seriously, go watch it and tell me thats a "normal" story.

@ futurefoe

depp might play weird roles, but many of them are actually very different characters...one dimensional is about the last thing i would call depp.

So very tired of Burton. His style was original when he started, but has been the same ever since, not changing a lick. If he'd try something new I'd be interested but this seems to be just more of the same.

Hmmm, i'm liking this movie more and more. I'm not a burton fan, but you gotta admit, visually it's stunning! Love the cheshire cat!! Stephen Fry is one of the funniest and smartest people alive. Hate johnny depp as the hatter though. Not because of his acting, cause depp is great in most movies (except as willy wonka, that sucked. Gene wilders the only one who can play that role :D) But because he looks like a (slightly more) coked up madonna. It surprises me he the madd hatter hassen't adopted whole of wonderland yet :p.

Anywho, if you wanna get into the Wonderland sequal. I suggest you wacht the Scifi series: Alice. It's a 2 parter and it's not that bad. I enjoyed it for the most part.

@FutureFoe.. Depp is most definitely not one dimensional. For example: Once Upon A Time In Mexico compared to Willy Wonka or Public Enemies and Edward Scissorhands.

@Spilox.. Will definitely check out Alice. Thanks.

Anyhows, I can certainly understand people's gripes about Burton but his films are generally quite entertaining. You cannot say Ed Wood, Planet of the Apes and Corpse Bride are the same sort of thing. Fair enough, you can see his mark on the film which is sometimes good. Sometimes bad. Quite like Tarantino.

He does tend to choose the films that focus on an outsider though, which is more to do with the story not visual representation. I do have to say: Mars Attacks! is great lol.

I'm not a huge fan of Burtons at all. This story in particular seems to fit his style of filming almost perfectly.
Its like him and the story were made for each other.

People need to get of Burtons back, sure I was also skeptic when i first heard Burton and Depp was once again collaborating on a movie in the realms of absurdity and weird characters, but like @CorndogBurglar so rightfully points out, this story in particular just fits Burton so perfectly, that it can't go wrong.

I'm definitely gonna be in line to see this film when it hits the theaters.

@FutureFoe:

You said "@ How different were his roles in Alice, Wonka, Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow or even Pirates (rhetorical)? Not very (imo)."

Nobody said he doesn't have similar roles. You said he's one dimensional but you're ignoring his very different performances like Secret Window, Finding Neverland, Public Enemies, Blow, Once Upon A Time in Mexico and even From Hell. I can understand where you're coming from but you've got to sample some of his other work. The guy even sings in Sweeney Todd. He dresses up as a woman in Ed Wood! Very versatile actor.

I like how Public Enemies had Christian Bale. Hopefully they had a word on set and he'll come forth as The Riddler. =D

lol@Corndog.. Alice in Wonderland is a very weird story! I watched Jan Svankmajer's version, I was like WTF?!!

Burton is awsome but I agree with FutureFoe, All of Burtons movies are the same and Johnny Depp and Burtan's Wife always play the same characters in them. I'll go see it, and most likely enjoy it, but I've already seen this because I've already seen Burtons other films.

Based on the comments on this article (and others relating to this movie), it's pretty clear that few people (if any) on this site have actually read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
This movie is a "sequel" that they've created, and has nothing to do with the original story, just uses the characters. That's actually the main reason I personally am not so interested in seeing this movie. If they were trying to bring the book to the big screen using today's modern CGI etc., it could have been amazing. But as it is, it's just an excuse for Burton to make a film.

On the flip side, that's kind of what Sleepy Hollow was, and I loved Sleepy Hollow...
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 1/21/2010, 10:45 PM
@ hescian

i don't think its a sequel, man. no, it doesn't have anything to do with the original story, but it looks to me like its just a different interpretation. i mean, the disney movie didn't have anything to do with the original books either. it was based off of them, but hardly the same. this is no different, a movie based off of the books.

hescian - 1/21/2010, 11:56 PM
@corndog - sure it's a sequel. The synopsis states that Alice RETURNS to the magical world of her childhood. I'd actually be fine with it if it was just a movie based off the books. Ah well, I'll reserve some judgement for the movie when it comes out.
