The Angelina Jolie starring Maleficent just made its debut in theaters last weekend, and while it wasn't very well accepted by critics, it certainly made a big splash at the box office, scoring $69 million domestically. And with the well-recieved teaser for the upcoming Kenneth Branagh directed Cinderella film, it seems that Disney will continue recreating their animated classics into live-action films. Read on more more details!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Twilight director Bill Condon has signed on to direct an upcoming live-action adaptation of Disney's classic Beauty and the Beast. The news comes following the theatrical success of Robert Stromberg's Maleficent, which hit theaters worldwide last weekend.

Condon's name has been circling the project for a few months, so it comes to no surprise that he joined the project, and if Disney are going for a musical take on the film, he has experience having directed the 2006 musical hit Dreamgirls. His most recent film is The Fifth Estate, which starred Benedict Cumberbatch and was released last year.

So, what are your thoughts on Bill Condon joining the project as director? As always, drop a comment below and stay tuned for more!

I think I'm surprisingly ok with this. So dar they've done a good job with all their live action remakes of the classics so I'm gonna withhold my complaints till they let me down. Cinderella and this I think could be pretty cool

What mmadadamm said, when we going to get a good live-action Aladdin. I'm tired of Beauty and the Beast interpretations like the crappy Beastly movie and the CW Beauty and the Beast television show.

There is a magic that these stories have that are only emitted when watching them in their original format. Cartoons. Other than that it'll just feel like another rip off, but I'll reserve my judgements. If they wanna make a ton of money they should just do Aladdin. They'll attract all the teen girls , assuming they get a good looking lead, and it'll be a classic Disney story. So it's a good fit for them

Disney isn't going to stop with the live action adaptations any time soon. Strange though when you think about it. I mean, what's more expensive. Live action and hiring pricey A-List actors to re-imagine their classics. Or going old school like Princess and the Frog and coming out with more "original" material, and hiring good voice actors/theater people.

It also must be said that Bill Condon is a very capable director. People who have a hate on for Twilight will be tempted to immediately dismiss this man's credential's because he was a part of that franchise legacy. It must be said though, that he did amicable work considering the source material he was given. Plus, his prior work is really where his legacy lies. I'm interested to see where he takes this.

Where the [frick] Did Disney get the idea that remaking their Classic Animated movies into live action was anything other than a retarded idea? Do they not know they're Disney?!

Oh god, Disney, you suck.

Malificent was awful. Stop doing this shit. It's no wonder you keep snatching up other popular properties. You're incapable of coming up with anything NEW!

[frick] this. Where's Del Toro's version?

@mrexcellent: The budget for Princess and the Frog was over 100 million that's about as much as your typical live action film (or two). So they could really do either or but they seem stuck on this CG/live action is trend. I liked Frozen, Wreck It Ralph, and Big Hero 6 looks good so I don't mind if they continue the CG. I just wish they'd drop the mediocre live action crap for the traditional stuff but remaking their animated classics is obviously a much lazier way for them to make money.

Soon they'll tell us a live action remake of The Lion King is coming down the pike from the director of Home Alone 5.

Honestly, the worst thing about all these live action "remakes" of stories have been the, um, stories.

If Snow White and The Huntsman was a half-way good *story*, I think the visuals and the juxtaposition of these fairy tale elements and a harsh "realistic" world is pretty interesting. I literally fell asleep in the middle of that movie for a bit, but when the animals come out and gather around Snow White... It's actually kinda cool. But then the movie itself is like.. about Snow White running out in the woods for a bit and then coming.... back? I think?

So really, if they just adapt better material and make it as gorgeous looking as they obviously CAN, it could potentially be really cool.

Well with the last two remakes of Disney animated films the Disney princess will be played by some ugly chick while the female villain will be played by a much hotter and sexier woman case in point

Snow White and the Huntsman

Snow White:

Evil Queen:

Maleficent

Princess Aurora:

Maleficent:

In this movie Belle will probably be played by

and since there is no female villain then it will probably be

as Gaston and hell I am not gay but I would get with him before I even got 10 feet next to Miley.

@Simon

Ya the visual aspect of the movie was by far the best thing that movie ever did. Visually the movie was great from the sets, the costumes, and just the aesthetic of the world. Too bad the story was pretty bad and the dwarves were pretty dumb even though I liked the actors playing them (R.I.P. Bob Hoskins). Did you notice the complete ripoff of Princess Mononoke and the God of the Forest.

Snow White and the Huntsman:

Princess Mononoke:

Sorry can't find a good screen capture but if you saw the movie you would see the obvious similarities along when the White Deer was shot same thing when the Forest Spirit was shot.

pesmerga44 - 6/4/2014, 10:14 PM
Except the White Deer when shot didn't become a 100 foot tall demon god of death and decay so that is where the similarities end.

Why is Disney remaking their animated classics? Maleficent was meh at best and Jon Favreau's Jungle Book doesn't sound the slightest interesting. Not to mention casting [frick]ing Scarlett "nice tits no talent" Johansson as Kaa.
