DOCTOR STRANGE Star Mads Mikkelsen Shares Hopes For MCU Return And Reflects On His Kaecilius Experience

Doctor Strange star Mads Mikkelsen has shared his interest in returning to the MCU somewhere down the line while reflecting on the experience of playing the villainous Kaecilius. Read on for details...

In Doctor Strange, Mads Mikkelsen played the villainous Kaecilius, an obscure comic book villain who was the Sorcerer Supreme's first big test in the MCU. His story ended in defeat, but with Clea now in play, there's always a chance we'll finally get to see what became of the Dormammu loyalist.

In an interview with Business Insider, the actor was asked whether he ever struggled to understand the material he was working with in the MCU (this comes from Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo recently revealing they'd often struggle to understand scripts).

"We did have that in 'Doctor Strange,' to a degree," Mikkelsen admitted. "And that there's a very good reason for that because 'Doctor Strange' is born from a psychedelic graphic novel, which was very different from the other ones."

"So the whole going from one dimension to the other thing was something we had to get our heads around. Luckily, there was some beautiful imagery and graphic paintings they put on the wall, so we got an idea of it."

"In terms of what the film was about, I don't think we were in doubt," he continued. "It was a very solid script, but I must say, watching some of the latest ones, as an audience, I also go, 'Whoa. Who's that? Where did he come from?' So I understand that they had a few issues on those."

It's interesting to hear Mikkelsen make that point about recent MCU movies as there has been a great deal of confusion surrounding certain creative decisions and characters who have been inserted into the Multiverse Saga with little explanation or context.

Asked about a possible MCU return, he added, "The most fun must've been 'Doctor Strange' because I got to do two things I love: doing magic and flying Kung Fu. Yeah, that one. I wouldn't mind going back to him. But I have a tendency to die in all the franchises, so it's going to be hard."

Mikkelsen, who has become known for portraying villains in everything from Hannibal to Casino Royale and Fantastic Beasts, was largely wasted back in 2016 as another of those MCU baddies that serves a purpose but is largely forgotten once the credits roll.

Since then, we've heard he's in talks for a new MCU role that won't be Kaecilius. There's been no mention of which character he's being eyed for but the actor remains a fan-favourite choice to play Victor Von Doom in Fantastic Four and his name has been linked to the villain several times in recent months.

As always, keep checking back here for updates as we have them.

Let this be a lesson, Marvel.

Never go full DC.

I think he gives a pretty good general audience view of the MCU, because that's exactly it for a lot of people.
I think Feige and the people in charge sometimes forget that a lot of these side characters they're pushing forward now, are for the most part only interesting to fans of the comics.
The general audience aren't the ones tuning into to Disney+ for characters like Echo or lining up at the box office for The Marvels. The MCU is too much "Whoa. Who's that?" these days.

@TrentCrimm - Especially when even the movies themselves do absolutely nothing to explain them and just drop them in randomly.

Like just looking at the sequel to this guys movie, Doctor Strange 2, there's a random girl who can jump from universe to universe, she tells this to Doctor Strange over a plate of bacon, eggs and exposition and wham, we're off. Just like that.

And when we finally do get her origin later in the movie, it's that her powers kicked in when she was stung by a bee? What? They don't say that she's a genetic mutation or that the bee gave her powers, just she was stung by a bee and we're off to the races. Weird AF.

And that's not even mentioning the random bull-man in the background training along with the rest of the humans. Like WTF?! Who is that guy?!

Even The Marvels was confusing to audiences and that at least had a couple of TV series and a movie to explain how these ladies got their powers. But not everyone saw those TV shows. And there are literally decades missing between Captain Marvel's origin movie and her becoming a legendary superhero. To the audience she's new, not legendary.

You've got to remember your audience sometimes. Remember that they don't necessarily know or even care about these characters.

"Remember that they don't necessarily know or even care about these characters."

Exactly, it's the crowd who don't know the difference between Marvel and DC, they just see superhero movies. It used to be a joke that older people would watch something like Iron Man and say "is Batman in this one?", it's a joke because it was/is true, that's the general audience right there, for the most part they don't know or care.

@TrentCrimm - So true. And back then Marvel knew it. They knew the audience didn't know or care about Iron Man, so they told the audience his story and made them care.

@TrentCrimm - “The MCU is too much "Whoa. Who's that?" these days.“

I agree. But it’s more of a “who’s that?” Followed by an indifferent shrug.

For sure, when Guardians of the Galaxy came out people said "Who's that?", but Marvel actually gave audiences a reason to want to find out, you can't make people ask "Who's that?" and then deliver a subpar product, because then nobody is going to care who "that" is.

@marvel72 -

I use Chrome as well, so I don't know why you're not able to. Simply copying/pasting has worked for me.

@marvel72 - Delete the “s”in https and make sure that if it has “gif” in the address, you delete everything in the address that comes after that.

They managed to ground it as much as possible. That's why it worked!

Two human conflicts instead of multiversal pyrotechnics.

If he wants to do more magic, guess Doom is always a possibility

This could easily be the origin of Kaecilius and how he found Kamar Taj, mirroring Doctor Strange's origin.

It would honestly fit for him to be retconned into being Doom. It would give him history in the MCU and connect him to the first Multiverse movie. It actually sets up Doom's role in Secret Wars really well, because Kaecilius and Dormammu's whole thing was grafting universes into the Dark Dimension. So creating Battleworld would be an extension of this plan. His own Dark Dimension.

Return as.... DOCTOR DOOM!

I thought Kaecilius was alright honestly , mainly due to Mikkelsen’s natural charisma (and I did like his motivation aswell)…

He just wasn’t fleshed out beyond that but oh well , he served his purpose & Mads did well in the role with the material he had.

However i personally wouldn’t want him back in the MCU as a different character since I don’t like double dipping casting but I could see him in the DCU , perhaps as Mr Freeze?.

Dr strange 1 was one of the more underrated gems of the prior phases. Kaecililius wasn’t the greatest but I wouldn’t be mad if mads came back as him

@MyCoolYoung - agreed on the first one

The character arc is good and the climax is one of Marvels best imo.

@TheVisionary25 - 100% this. It had stakes but didn’t just become a huge fight featuring a bunch of cronies and the main villain

He’s an immaculately talented thespian and his talents were underutilized as Kaecilius, let him play Doom
