In Doctor Strange, Mads Mikkelsen played the villainous Kaecilius, an obscure comic book villain who was the Sorcerer Supreme's first big test in the MCU. His story ended in defeat, but with Clea now in play, there's always a chance we'll finally get to see what became of the Dormammu loyalist.
In an interview with Business Insider, the actor was asked whether he ever struggled to understand the material he was working with in the MCU (this comes from Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo recently revealing they'd often struggle to understand scripts).
"We did have that in 'Doctor Strange,' to a degree," Mikkelsen admitted. "And that there's a very good reason for that because 'Doctor Strange' is born from a psychedelic graphic novel, which was very different from the other ones."
"So the whole going from one dimension to the other thing was something we had to get our heads around. Luckily, there was some beautiful imagery and graphic paintings they put on the wall, so we got an idea of it."
"In terms of what the film was about, I don't think we were in doubt," he continued. "It was a very solid script, but I must say, watching some of the latest ones, as an audience, I also go, 'Whoa. Who's that? Where did he come from?' So I understand that they had a few issues on those."
It's interesting to hear Mikkelsen make that point about recent MCU movies as there has been a great deal of confusion surrounding certain creative decisions and characters who have been inserted into the Multiverse Saga with little explanation or context.
Asked about a possible MCU return, he added, "The most fun must've been 'Doctor Strange' because I got to do two things I love: doing magic and flying Kung Fu. Yeah, that one. I wouldn't mind going back to him. But I have a tendency to die in all the franchises, so it's going to be hard."
Mikkelsen, who has become known for portraying villains in everything from Hannibal to Casino Royale and Fantastic Beasts, was largely wasted back in 2016 as another of those MCU baddies that serves a purpose but is largely forgotten once the credits roll.
Since then, we've heard he's in talks for a new MCU role that won't be Kaecilius. There's been no mention of which character he's being eyed for but the actor remains a fan-favourite choice to play Victor Von Doom in Fantastic Four and his name has been linked to the villain several times in recent months.
As always, keep checking back here for updates as we have them.
