Charlize Theron had dipped her toe in the sci-fi/fantasy/comic book genre before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but only joined her first major superhero franchise when she debuted as Clea in the sequel's post-credits scene.
During an in-depth interview with THR, Theron was asked about her decision to sign on for the part, knowing that she'd almost certainly be required to reprise the role multiple times.
The Academy Award-winner admits to being "ignorant" about the franchise at the time, but was won over when she actually sat down to watch the movies.
“If I can find the anchor, then I’m never going to be a snob about, like, ‘Oh, does this make me less of a powerful actor?’” she explained. “I was ignorant, I didn’t know those [Marvel] movies well enough until a family who I consider, like, my adopted family had me watch them. They’re crazy Marvel fans, and I always used to make fun of them. Like, ‘Oh my God, you guys are such f*cking nerds.’”
"Then one spring break we rented a house and our kids were in a camp and they were like, 'You need to sit down and watch,'" Theron continued. "So, we watched all the movies, and I was like, 'Oh my God, they’re so f*cking good.” And the kids got in on it, too, and it was such an enjoyable ride."
Clea only appears very briefly in the stinger, enlisting Strange's help to repair an incursion caused by his Multiversal adventures. We still don't know where we'll see the powerful sorceress show up next, but it sounds like Theron is looking forward to the opportunity to better explore the character.
"There’s a mythology around it and it’s been thought out over decades with Clea, and I’m challenged by that. Like, how do you reinvent that? So, I’m excited, but I honestly don’t know what the f*ck it’s going to be."
What do you guys make of Theron's comments? Where do you think Clea will appear next?
