While most fans suspected this might be the case, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness wasted no time in revealing the Scarlet Witch as its big bad. The trailers did a somewhat convincing job of making fans believe Gargantos might be taking aim at the former Sorcerer Supreme, but unlike Shuma-Gorath from the comics, the creature didn't really look all that threatening.
Ultimately, Gargantos was a minor foe which Stephen Strange and Wong managed to save America Chavez from. We'd later learn that Wanda Maximoff had sent the monster after the reality-hopping teenager, but an eye-catching new detail has now been revealed by co-producer Richie Palmer.
Talking on the Disny+ Audio Commentary for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he revealed that Marvel Studios used a scan of Elizabeth Olsen's eye in order to create Gargantos' eyeball.
This was done as a way of foreshadowing the Scarlet Witch reveal and is probably one of the cleverest MCU Easter Eggs we've seen (no pun intended). However, it's now going to be a little weird watching that scene where Gargantos gets stabbed through the eye knowing it's a carbon copy of Olsen's!
With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness now on Disney+, chances are more references and Easter Eggs like this one will be spotted, but it's definitely fun to see the sort of thought filmmaker Sam Raimi put into bringing this adventure to life.
In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Marvel Cinematic Universe unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. We'll journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.
The movie's cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stühlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. The film is directed by Sam Raimi, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Loki Head Writer Michael Waldron.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters. It's now available on Digital platforms and Disney+, and hits Blu-ray, 4k Ultra HD, and DVD on July 26.
