Deadline reports that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness exceeded expectations on Friday, earning $90 million instead of the projected $85 million (including Thursday previews). As of right now, all signs point to the Marvel Studios sequel grossing between $198.8 million - $200 million domestic.
Disney is being a little more conservative with a $170 million - $185 million opening weekend projection, but the movie is definitely aiming for that highly coveted $200 million mark.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has made $139.3 million internationally through Friday, and is expected to pass the $230 million mark by the end of tomorrow. As a result, Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange sequel looks set to have a global opening weekend of a massive $400 million.
While the movie is one of only a handful of Marvel Studios blockbusters not to receive an A-, A, or A+ CinemaScore, a B+ isn't hampering Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness too much. With 75% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and an 88% Audience Score, it's apparent that people are enjoying this first big screen trip into the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Multiverse.
"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a one of a kind blockbuster experience and a pure, unadulterated Sam Raimi movie that, while not quite the crazy ride through the Multiverse we expected, delivers a fun, horror-tinged trip," we said in our review of the blockbuster this week.
