ETERNALS Director Chloé Zhao Explains Why The Heroes Didn't Fight Thanos And Teases Celestial Mythology

Eternals director Chloé Zhao has better explained why the team of ancient heroes didn't play a role in the Infinity Saga, while also teasing the fact her movie is going to delve into Celestial mythology.

Marvel Studios is going to great lengths to keep Eternals under wraps, and there's no doubt a very good reason for that. It certainly feels like Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao is going to take the Marvel Cinematic Universe to some unexpected places, but as these heroes have been on Earth for thousands of years now, we need some answers about why they were absent for the entire Infinity Saga.

Talking to Total Film, Zhao doubled down on what we learned in the "final" trailer for the movie by pointing out that the Eternals are under strict instructions not to interfere in human events.

"[The audience] will understand why. Not only why, but how complicated not interfering made them feel. We explore that," the filmmaker promised. "You’ll see that in the film. The Eternals were instructed not to interfere with any human conflict unless Deviants are involved. There’s a reason why that’s the case. And that was the instruction from the prime Celestial Arishem."

Eternals is a movie that also promises to reveal much more about those Celestials, and Zhao would go on to hint that this exploration of the MCU's history is going to shed a lot more light on their mythology.

"What excited me is the idea of going back in time, and exploring [the time] before Thanos was born, before anyone was born," she says. "Where does the MCU go back in time? And that brings us to the mythology of the Celestials. Anything involving the Celestials is going to be at a huge scale level of complication, let’s put it that way.”

It's interesting that Zhao mentions Thanos here, as there has been a lot of speculation that we could see a much younger version of the Mad Titan in this movie (remember, his parents were Eternals). It all depends on how much time we spend in the past, of course, but we'd be shocked if Marvel Studios doesn't use this opportunity to take a deep dive into a few key moments in the history of the MCU.

Eternals is set to be released on November 5, later this year.

Wonder how different endgame and infinity war would have been if they had done Inhumans like originally planned.

Wonder if they always planned to do eternals or if its a replacement for inhumans. Would seem pointless to do both at the same time

@dracula - They SHOULD be treated as vastly different properties. I dont see why they couldn’t coexist.

@PerrinNation1 - They seem similar enough that there is no reason to do both.

Plus saves some big characters for later, when obviously more actors and characters time in the mcu comes to an end.

Plus really when it was in the works, the inhumans were just being treated as the x men stand in. Now they have the X men back. Do we need two big groups of naturally powered people introduced within a few years of each other.

Could save inhumans for phase 7 or 8. Do every big group of characters, then the universe will just become boring when they no longer have those characters.

I mean, ok. You're getting yourself in an uphill battle of getting people to care about these people in that case, but fine. It's been explained.

I assume this will be answered in the movie, so I don't see why this needs to be brought up now

Honestly, all I want out of this movie is a quick hint that the Celestials put the X-Gene in humanity way back when humans were being created.

If they do that I won't really care how good or bad this movie is. It will at least mean that mutants aren't going to just suddenly appear in the MCU through some multiverse or Snap/Blip shenanigans.

Maybe I’m reading into it to much, but there’s something about the “before anyone was born” part that really intrigued me.

In the excellent Earth X Trilogy, the Celestials were hatched from planets, like an egg.

@marvel72 - it seems like that’s the plot, the blip started the hatching process for the celestial inside earth and the deviants awake because of that as. So they’re fighting the deviants and fighting to stop the earth from being destroyed through celestial birth

Can't believe how much people tripped over themselves to trip over the plot of this movie before we'd even known it. CinemaSins culture at it's worst

Excited for the Celestial stuff. It'd be great if we got a narration of their history like the New Gods scene in Superman TAS
