It Sounds Like THE ETERNALS Will Change The Marvel Cinematic Universe Forever

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has dropped some very intriguing clues about The Eternals, hinting that the introduction of these characters could fundamentally change the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

THOR was a game changer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it introduced the idea of Norse mythology into what had previously been a very grounded world. Since then, Marvel Studios has taken us into outer space and introduced all manner of wacky and wonderful characters but it sounds like The Eternals will shake things up in an even bigger way as they could change the MCU's entire history.

When Kevin Feige was asked whether or not the planned movie will tie into Greek mythology in the way Jack Kirby envisioned when he created the characters, he said: "Well, one of the cool things about that property and what Jack Kirby did with it and what’s been done with it in recent years is it does tie into they’re called Eternals, they’ve been around for a long time. There’s this notion of all of these myths and legends that we know from ancient times, were they inspired by the Eternals?"

What this means is that we could finally see the likes of Hercules and Ares introduced to the MCU, not to mention a retcon of sorts for the early days of mankind. "Were they Eternals? It’s a very … you know, it’s an ancient aliens kind of sci-fi trope that we think would be fun to explore someday," he teased, seemingly making it clear that these characters are essentially replacing the Inhumans!

There are a lot of different directions The Eternals could head in and it's going to be very interesting seeing how things play out with this one. What do you guys think? Let us know your thoughts below.

@MrCamw1 - Good luck. I've been trying to slog my way though the original Kirby run and... it's soooo late-Kirby.

The Gaiman/JRJR run was good, but not the best introduction to the characters as characters. Very cinematic (you could almost film it as is), but it doesn't give a lot of the broader themes that are what I like to dig my teeth into.

I have a bad feeling about this.

They should focus more on actual heroes instead of this.

Eternals is another "aliens from Earth" type story.

I'd replace it with a cosmic-set story any day of the week..

@MaximusTheMad - it could not be more cosmic, the Eternals are pretty much represented throughout the universe, they have a direct connection to Thanks, the celestial, the deviants, the Olympian Gods etc... do not forget that they are not only earthlings...very similar to the five Inhuman houses Black Bolt once ruled. I of course would have preferred a decent Inhuman movie instead of the steaming pile of s#@&% That we got, but this is the next best thing. It would be a better move than just create a Thanks solo movie, this gives us/Marvel an opportunity to delve a bit deeper into his past and show us the other former Eternals of Titan. Now that Marvel can officially use the term "Mutant" they need to teach the general audience that Thanos is a unique Eternal/Deviant Mutant and was already awesome before collecting infinity stones

When I was a kid I never thought I’d see a Thor movie (much less three) but I did hold out hope to see him appear in an Avengers movie so at least I could see him on the big screen. The Eternals are a group that were instrumental in Thor becoming my favorite superhero and I’ve loved them ever since because of it but I never in a million years thought they would make it into the movies and yet here we are. What a time to be a comic fan.

I know this is an Eternals article, but this has to have been their backup plan after Inhumans. I'd love to see Inhumans have a much larger role in the MCU moving forward. Their role in Agents of Shield has been great, their TV debut was horrid, I think they deserve a chance to be presented on the big screen correctly. Do a soft reboot, recast, and keep it moving.

I would love to see Hemsworth as THOR side by side with Dwayne Johnson as Hercules. If they can use this storyline to make that happen, I’m all for it. Two of the most charismatic actors I’ve seen. That type of buddy movie would be a blast.

They better make this film and don't turn it into another Inhumans situation.

@Pantherpool - Feige seems to like the Eternals, while it was Perlmutter who wanted Inhumans (primarily as a surrogate X-Men since Fox had them). It seems pretty likely he's moving forward on this one.

Again, the Inhumans core story was way too close to the story of Black Panther... technologically advanced society hidden from the rest of the world behind a dome (originally in the Himalayas) and ruled by superhero monarchy has a blood relation stage a coup while exploring whether they should reveal themselves to the rest of humanity. That, more than anything, is likely what got it dropped from the production slate.

At their core, the Eternals are actually closer to Thor in concept: a lot of Earth legends and gods were based on actual beings who are still alive. There’s some fun to be had with that concept... a bit of Highlander meets Marvel. If the rumors are true and they plan to mostly focus on Sersi (the source of Circe in Greek mythology), she’s a fun character that could be played any number of ways. Her lengthy Avengers run had her join the group as a partying, rich socialite who wanted to play at being a superhero (and happened to have more than enough power to back it up.)
