EDITORIAL: I've Figured It Out--Loki, Annihilus, and the Negative Zone!

Now that we've seen the trailer we have a few more clues as to who the alien threat is:

Editorial Opinion
By RamonSuarez - Mar 04, 2012 03:03 PM EST
Filed Under: Fan Fic

1.) I am pretty sure the movie is dealing with the Negative Zone. Think about it. Where else would Loki have been transported to after he fell through a wormhole? Look at these stills from the last two trailers. Doesn't it look like a new dimension is being opened?

Now why would an alien empire with superior alien technology as vast and mighty as the Kree, Skrull, Badoon, etc. need a portal to travail major space which makes them dependent upon Loki to transport them to their destination of attack? The only consistent explanation is that the alien invaders aren't just separated from Earth by space, but an entire dimension of reality--hence the Negative Zone.

2.) Anyone who is familiar with the Avengers have heard of a particular villain known as Annihilus (eponymous known as "The Living Death That Walks") who is a lord of the Negative Zone. He once invaded Asgard and was especially featured in a 2006 series called Annihilation Wave. Here are some of their alien space ships which make up that alien wave:

Notice the group of Annihilation Wave space ships destroying its enemy fleet. Look at the ones in the upper right hand area which are rather fish-like.

Now look at these pictures of the "Leviathan" from the trailer.

Don't they look similar?

3.) Now look at Loki in his suit during the Stuttgart, Germany scene where he seeks to subjugate the crowd. Look at the "staff" and the flashing gem he's wielding:

People thought he was using the Cosmic Cube attached to a staff....but what if it is the Cosmic Control Rod? Here is is a picture of the Cosmic Control Rod chained around Annihilus' neck.

Here is the Cosmic Control Rod as its glowing by itself:

Notice the similarity in shape to the tube like gem attached to Loki's staff.

I theorize that Loki fell into a wormhole at the end of Thor where he enters the Negative Zone and encounters Annihilus. There he makes a pact with the Negative Zone warlord to bring the Annihilation Wave to Earth. Annihilus then gives Loki the Cosmic Control Rod to help accomplish the task. Here is where the Cosmic Cube comes into play: Loki will use it to open up a direct portal to Earth and fights the Avengers with the Rod.

PS: A heads up from Tainted87 pointed out more proof that Annihilus and the Annihilation Wave will indeed be the other main villains in the Avengers backing up Loki. Right click on this wallpaper image from the Avengers Movie site. Now left click on "Open Image in New Tab". Look at the URL:

The blob could be anything. The creature does not look like that ship. The glowy thingy does not look like that rod.

I still beleive that after credits scene is in chronological order, and Loki really did teleport to earth. Besides, the negative Zone isn't one of the nine realms. I don't think it was possible for Loki to travel there at the end of Thor.

The "blob" looks like a shockwave.
The portal from the first picture is exactly that: a portal. I'm happy to say that I don't know what is causing that portal to open, perhaps the cosmic cube.

That URL is not a full address, but the beginning of nearly every link used at the official Marvel site. I had looked it up just after the official Avengers site went public and thought it was curious. When RamonSuarez posted this article, I felt it was necessary to add that easter egg. Later it was pointed out that Marvel had in fact, been using this same precursory address for years in sites completely unrelated to the Avengers (which I did suspect, but it was just too exciting to pass by).

I cannot dispute that Loki may or may not have traveled directly to Earth when he let himself go at the end of 'Thor', but just as well, there is no evidence to suggest that Loki couldn't have passed through the Negative Zone. It is more or less established that Earth is referred to as Midgard by the Asgardians, however it does not mean that the nine realms are only those planets. I mean come on, what of the other planets in our galaxy? Also, I don't think the Bifrost is only capable of transporting people to those nine realms/dimensions. Another point, although in the comics the nine realms are defined, in the movie, Thor is cut off after naming only half of the nine realms.

I'd be happy if it was Annihilus simply because he's such an underused villain. The implications among fans however seem to surround Thanos - that if Annihilus is a character of death and nihilism, then he would be an appropriate ally of Thanos. I've said it many times however that I really don't like the idea of Thanos. I think Thanos is such an over-powered character with a completely batshit goal - to win the affection of "Death".

That is assuming that Thanos would be adapted accurately, and more importantly, that they would manifest Death as an actual character in the movies - which I think would be absolutely stupid. In addition, you have the Asgardian (I know I say this erroneously, but I don't know what that whole mythos is called in the comics) realm of Hel, with its aptly named ruler Hela, who is also a woman. Why would another personification of death by needed?

Also bear in mind that Thanos is the equivalent of War Machine... which I'll explain. When Iron Man was announced, everyone wanted to know if War Machine would be in it. Is it because of Marvel vs Capcom? That's all I can understand really, because truthfully, War Machine in the comics is such a dull character that he really wouldn't have any fan-following comparable to Iron Man. As far as the arcade gamers were concerned, War Machine was a super powerful weapons platform with all kinds of different weapons loaded in his suit that made him look all the more powerful than Iron Man. If you think in those terms of who is more powerful, then I guess I'd be able to understand why people want to see the big boss of Marvel vs Capcom - Thanos... appearing in the first Avengers movie.

Well, no, actually, I don't, but I tried.

@golden123 i dont think he went to midgard, i thunk he just had influence of selvig, also since when has anything in the MCU been in chronological order, finding the hammer didn't happen right after iron man 2, cap didn't wake up right after he was frozen, the point of the scenario after Thor is that it would be open ended, open to interpretation, so loki's plan/journey wouldn't be restricted to what was seen

I'm just shocked they have kept the identity of the villains a secret for this long. We probably won't find out until the first critic screenings happen and even then Marvel might swear the critic to secrecy until release day.

Kudos to Joss Whedon and Marvel for being able to keep this under wraps in the age of constant leaks and whole websites devoted to CBMs (like this one).

@Tainted87

Um... I'm not sure if I should take that humorously. Annihilus won't be in The Avengers, neither will N-Zone invaders. The alien army are minions of Thanos. You'll see in May. @3D isn't as crazy as he seems.

Still wondering why....
"Minions of Thanos" sound as random as "Minions of Voldemort"
Tainted87
Tainted87 - 3/4/2012, 11:13 PM
Like, I really don't care if Annihilus or anything from the Negative Zone isn't in the movie, but what makes you think it could possibly be Thanos?

Apart from the Infinity Gauntlet's blurry blink-and-you'll-miss-it half-a-second-shot in Thor...

Seriously, I want this explained to me as if I had never read a single comic before.

95 - 3/4/2012, 11:32 PM
Thanos is often associated with the Cosmic Cube- which will act as a portal "opener". Kevin Feige has waved around the Infinity Gauntlet too many times to not consider. Marvel has expressed interest in a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, as The Avengers opens the door to the Cosmic Side of the Cinematic Universe. It appears by the generic names used in merchandising that the army are fodder. Aliens appear BLUE, with YELLOW ARMOR.

I didn't like the Thanos' minion theory either, but let's just say, I know for a fact that it's them.

95 - 3/4/2012, 11:59 PM
Thanos is not in the main film. I think you know this source. He's on this site. I won't say who. I've argued that his theory is ridiculous. He does truly know, though. Looking back, he's been right, plus he's always hinted that it's not Thanos but somewhere in that direction. To me, it was super clear after seeing the Super Bowl TV Spot. Aliens look like Thanos. I'm not an all-knowing person, but I just can't express enough how much I know this. Loki's army is minions of Thanos.

The Leviathon looks like it is a mechanical arthropod.
Thanos will be could very likely be teased but I also think he was too powerful to be used for the first movie.
I don't think Loki justs arrive on Earth even by accident as if he got transported when he fell at the end of Thor. He gets deliberately transported to Midgard by manipulating Selvig who in turn is using science and the Cosmic Cube to open or establish an Eisntein-Rosen bridge. If this theory has any credit to it, then the question is where exactly is Loki that he needs the Cosmic Cube to transport him to Midgard? Maybe the N-Zone. I always thought Loki was using the purple infinty gem to transport himself but if he was trapped in another dimension then perhaps the purple power gem only can serve to transport anywhere within that dimension or universe but not from one dimension to another. But the Cosmic Cube can.

Would Thanos not already have the ability to open portals to Earth in order to get there instantly as opposed to travel in a ship? If so, why would an assault by Thanos's army seemingly occur through only one portal? Surely he would open mutliple portals so that an offensive can be launched simultaneously from mutliple locations? If getting from one universe (N-zone) to another (P-Zone) means using a portal created by a powerful source like the Cosmic Cube then maybe it's only the one portal that can be opened in order to create a link between universes.

Tainted87 - 3/5/2012, 9:04 AM
@3D
Is the source..... *looks both ways* Voldemort?
Can I get an address to send you a thesaurus, or is "minions of Thanos" their official name? Will a lightning bolt strike me dead if I refer to these minions of Thanos as "expendable servants of an idiotically overpowered overrated poorly-written poorly-designed cosmic villain who comes from a race of extradimensional beings whose convoluted back-stories would be too much to focus on without three more potentially dull movies supplying a reason for their involvement"?

Can you understand how silly it would be to have Thanos, (this idiotically overpowered overrated poorly-written poorly-designed cosmic villain who comes from a race of extradimensional beings whose convoluted back-stories would be too much to focus on without three more potentially dull movies supplying a reason for their involvement) try to destroy all life in the universe simply to win the affection of the personification of Death? Do I NEED to go back to my ranting about how pointless "Death" is when you have the character Hela from Thor's side of the fence?

Thanos would be an epic cinematic fail.
---

If your own thoughts around Thanos are that he should be involved because the cosmic cube is involved, then why aren't you going on about the Red Skull? The two are hand in hand, literally.

OdinsBeard - 3/5/2012, 11:22 AM
this would be a viable replacement for thanos. i say "replacement" because in my head thanos IS in this movie lol...anything else would be a let down... accept annihilus.
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 3/5/2012, 11:37 AM
Tainted87@ whoa bro ... tone it down a notch. you do realize that thanos is as equally ridiculous as annihilus, right? that given a room full of writers with years of planning they could hammer out a dozen reasonable scenarios for either of them to want to invade anything? and that none of them have to involve the character of death. and your Thanos = War Machine comparison couldn't be further off the mark.

CorndogBurglar - 3/5/2012, 12:06 PM
I'm not saying this theory is wrong, because, really, how would I know? BUT...that http://i.annihil.us URL has been in use on marvel's website for ages. LONG before they even started development on the first Iron Man movie.

Tainted87 - 3/5/2012, 12:47 PM
@OdinsBeard
I was playing a little - mixing a bit of sarcasm in.
But yeah, sure, given time anything could be made to make sense... and bear only a vague resemblance to the comics. I just get so tired of hearing about Thanos like he's the best thing since sliced bread.

My Thanos/War Machine comparison being off the mark....?
How? So many fanboys were clamoring for War Machine and when it happened, well, we got a cool action scene but otherwise Rhodey is just a glorified soldier who stole his best friend's technology. He really doesn't have much of a future in the Cinematic Universe apart from being a vehicle for action scenes, no pun intended.

Perhaps Venom would have been a better comparison. Sony pushed Venom on Raimi because of his popularity, and kerplop, we had one of the most disappointing adaptations to date.

Understand that Thanos is a Titan/Eternal who was rejected by his peers for his mutation. He didn't feel inferior, but he grew up as a breed apart - the rest of his race was irrelevant to him. He mixed in with magic and all kinds of fun experiments forbidden by the Eternals.

Sounds a LOT like Loki, doesn't it? Imagine what that would be, just having another Loki replacement, except Loki will make it look cool, especially since he came first.

Thanos would just be the same story again.

Also - what is War Machine doing while the Earth is getting ravaged? See, we didn't think that far ahead.

My only reservation is that 'the Negative Zone' and 'Annihilus' are part of the Fantastic Four universe, which means legally Disney/Marvel may not be able to use them...without Fox's permission of course, which they may have gotten.

But yeah, that being said, I think your deduction is correct sir!
