The Avengers vs. The Dark Knight Rises

When will the comparisons stop?

The war of words between the fans of The Avengers and those of The Dark Knight Rises is tired, old and illogical but it speaks to a much larger competitive war between Marvel and DC as well as the division among superhero fans. Since time immemorial DC and Marvel have competed against each other sometimes so aggressively that their battles have become a part of comic lore likewise there fans, they have badgered as well as insulted each other and for decades hotly debated which publishers has the best heroes. So when both comic book titans are releasing colossal budget tent pole mega-blockbuster films in the same year there is an inevitable war of words between their fans but this year their gripping has sunken their debates (if you can call them that)to a new low of frivolity and silliness.

The problem with Marvelites is their irrational contempt and dismissal of Nolan's film's and their firm embrace of the Adam Savage's motto "I reject your reality and substitute my own". Comparing Joss Whedon to Christopher Nolan is so unfair and risible that an outside observer can't help but think of it as a joke it's similar to comparing Quentin Tarantino to Chronicle director Josh Trank. What Joss Whedon and Mr. Trank have in common is that neither has ever directed a major motion picture before this year as well as both directors is currently in hot demand because of their debut films. Then there is the other guy in this farcical comparison the Golden Globe and BAFTA nominated director and two time Oscar nominated screen writer Christopher Nolan whom already has a best picture nomination under his belt and is currently working towards his next one. Please for sanity's sake stop the comparisons because they are absurd and the works of both men are so divergent that they are total opposites of each other. It is because of such comparisons that I have created a new SAT question Christopher Nolan is to Joss Whedon as Ice is to magma.

DC more specifically Bat fans are worse than Marvelites because they should be taking the high road in this war of words but are instead being terrible winners. Heath Ledgers academy award is a huge victory for comic book fans everywhere but especially for long suffering DC fans who been given the ultimate victory. When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an actor an Oscar for his portrayal of a DC villain can there possibly be any greater vindication of the Batman and DC story arcs? You won DC fans unless of course Marvel can produce their own academy award winning actor and even then no one can take away the bitter sweet victory you received in 2009. Instead of taking the high ground when Marvelites attack their films they engage them as if they have something else to prove. Worse and more embarrassing they get in worthless arguments about which film will be king of the box office when they know it’s the quality of the film and not the quantity it makes. Nolan is interested in making superhero movies that can be considered as good and as legitimately a part of cinema as The Godfather and Citizen Kane not movies designed to compete with Spiderman and the X-men as the best in the superhero genre or films that's purpose is to beat Harry Potter at the box office.

I say let Marvel fans jeer Christopher Nolan, brag and beat their chest red because their movie is king at the box office and come Sunday February 24, 2013 DC fans can showboat by doing the Oscar shuffle on the red carpet at the Hollywood and Highland center when the Academy Awards are presented that way everybody wins. Marvel can claim that they once again have reclaimed Box Office greatness also they have a mega franchise on their hands and if early reports are indeed correct than DC can expect to add another round of Academy Award nominations on its already Oscar heavy belt of 20 nominations and four wins. Congratulations comic book fans and "true believers" we are all winners in 2012.

This is from one of my previous articles. I think it fits here.

Nolanites, Marvelites. We were once once joined in a group called the fanboy. Now look at us. We argue and fight over which is better, Avengers, or Dark Knight Rises. Why can't we all agree that these movies will both be awesome? Why can't we watch the other movie's trailer without leaving negative comments, and without saying, "TDKR FTW!!!"? Why can't we enjoy these movies for what they really are? Not a dark, realistic take on the Caped Crusader. Not the most awesome movie this world has ever known. Not the movie where Hulk wears khakis, but a tribute. A tribute to these fictional do-gooders, these costumed men and woman who we all love, beating up people who threaten the world, the galaxy, or that part of the street. Why can't we see these movies as a tribute, not a year long debate? Why can't we come together, and celebrate that this year has finally come? Why can't we celebrate Iron Man fighting alongside Captain America, and Thor covering Hulk's back? Why can't we celebrate the epic climax to one of the most phenomenal series of al time? Why can't we accept what Spidey and The Lizard look like? Why can't we end this idiotic debate, go to the movies, buy some popcorn, and witness events that will never leave your mind? I hope you take my words into consideration.

The comparisons and rivalry / bickering between the opposing fans and subject matter will never end. Whats more irrelevant is when people try to put a stop to it. It's no different than any other fanbase of a competitive market, like sports.

"Why are we comparing movies by the year they come out? Avengers is JUST starting, so if anything, it should be compared to BB. "

if it was its own stand alone movie, your argument would work, but it isnt, it is the continuation of a story line from 4 other super hero movies.

You do know Joss Whedon directed Serenity in 2005? Plus he directed countless television episodes.

Why does it all have to be DC (or Nolan) fans vs Marvel fans. Isn't everyone on here comic book fans?? I prefer DC comics, but that doesn't mean I think the Marvel movies suck. I just don't understand why people feel this need to continue to argue over these two movies. I also find it funny when people go on about The Avengers and how it is so much better than The Dark Knight Rises will be and how DKR will never beat it at the box office. It probably won't beat it, but does that make it a worse movie? Of course not. The two movies offer something completely different and really shouldn't be compared. When you get right down to it though, for all those who continue to want to argue about this. None of the solo movies came close to what The Dark Knight made a few years ago. It took bringing them all together to do what Batman was able to do on it's own. Just saying.

Outside of the comic book fan cluster, Avengers is a movie people go see because they want a fun summer popcorn ride. And it gives them that, very successfully.

Dark Knight Rises is more like Return of the King (a much more logical comparison)...a movie they go see because they want to see a great movie, and to end an emotional and powerful journey.

The Avengers will win in the box office, simply because TDKR will not be released in china. TDKR will win at the academy awards, but getting a best director, and best picture nomination, possibly winning both.

its natural for competition between these giants of the comic book world and for it to spill over into the movies. batman has been movie based for many years and i personaly find all recent batmans weak beside batman the movie, dc realy need to reboot it back to as was personaly thinking ofcourse.
now on the flip side the avengers movie being marvels premier team up movie ( non mutant ofcourse) has possibilities and will sequals do it justice we can only wait and see.
batman has in recent outings been much the same as before just better sfx but weak stories and lack of imagination in my opinion, superman reboot failed but it was a good movie oddly, so as a viewer i wait to see the results and comment on how good or bad it is then but at the moment it feels like a dud of a movie from reports read.

"The Avengers vs. The Dark Knight Rises
When will the comparisons stop?"

Next year, when the Marvelites are looking forward to a possibly endless stream of movies, and sad Nolanites put pictures of TDKR's oscars (?) next to their Nolan shrines.

This idiot again?!?!?

Ledger was a moron who caused his own death through his own stupidity; he only got an academy award because he died.

Also academy awards are overrated; it's what a bunch of 62 year old white men think is best, many of whom are not involved in cinema at all. There is an article on cracked.com that explains it all.

Oh & lots all be honest here, the majority of the ppl commenting have probably took part in comparing the two films, I have, but I think it's pointless, neither side will ever win.
