Fancast: Recast Spider-Man '02 and the sequels

Fancast: Recast Spider-Man '02 and the sequels

Following my recast of X-Men 2000, I've chosen to recast Tobey and crew.

As mentioned, I recast X-Men here

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/ager/news/?a=47647

and, a while back, recast DareDevil as well

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/ager/news/?a=23157

Here, though, is my recast of Spider-Man '00. To be honest, I never disliked Tobey as SM. He may have been a bit older for my preference, as it began to show in the threequel, but he is an amazing actor. Parker should theoretically be slimmer and possibly taller. My cast, just as it was with X-Men, would not use any of the actors used in the given movie, no matter how perfect **cough J.K. Simmons' performance as Jameson cough**

The 1st movie>>>
Spider-Man

Would be the obvious emergence of Parker's powers and his struggles. I have no problem with the short appearance of Uncle Ben, getting straight to the point. The movie would start at the end of Peter's miserable days of high school and he would start College right away as he dabbles in wrestling and whatnot.

He meets GWEN and roommate, Harry, AT COLLEGE. He also works for JJJ and meets those I will list.

The movie parallels the creation of Doc Ock and Spider-Man. By movies end, Ock is locked up, Parker meets Mary Jane and The Green Goblin is born.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Spider-Man

Age: 21 (playing 18)

As seen in
3rd Rock From the Sun; 10 Things I Hate About You

Many may hate on him, and some may think he would fit the role today, but I feel his smarmy attitude seen in the aforementioned roles, his age and build are more than enough reasons why, in 2002, he was perfect.

Peter goes from struggling hero in the 1st to angry vengeance seeker in the 2nd to prey in the final.

Sophia Myles as Gwen Stacy

Age: 22 (playing 18)

As seen in
From Hell; Underworld

She played darker roles so I saw this as a chance for her smile to shine as Parker's fist girlfriend. She would have to sell herself pretty hard as the sequel would see her death at the hand of the Green Goblin, of course.

Ben Foster as Harry Osborn

22 (playing 18)

Big Trouble

I may be taking liberties here as 1) I promised myself that I wouldn't cast anyone already used (he was Angel in the not-my-version-but-the-Hollywood-version X-Men and the bigger reason 2) he had yet to show me how superb an actor he truly was. Although he was hilarious in Big Trouble, he had yet to show the range needed for Harry.

Sean Bean as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin

42

GoldenEye; LotR

Bean's rough-cut looks made him a patent choice for a villain, and this role in Patriot Games was the first of several villains that he would portray, all of whom come to sticky ends. Despite being professionally trained, Sean Bean adopts an instinctive style of acting that some say makes him especially well-suited to portraying his characters' depths. He has said in interviews that the most difficult part is at the start of filming when trying to understand the character. After achieving this he can snap in and out of character instantly.

Bean would slow-play Osborn throughout the 1st movie and by the sequel he would be the crazy SOB, we've been waiting for. I would keep the fatherly tenancies he showed for parker, further alienating his own son.

He dies at the hands of a black-suited Spider-Man towards the climax of the sequel.

Ryan Hurst as Flash Thompson

Age 25 (playing 18)

Remember the Titans; We Were Soldiers

Hurst looks so much like him and optimizes a bully, I thought it was a no-brainer. The bully who hates Parker and love the wall-crawler, he follows Peter from high school to college. Only for the 1st movie

Julie Christie as Aunt May

59

Hamlet; Dragonheart

I hate an old, helpless Aunt May. She is a descent age and a great actress.

Brian Dennehy as Uncle Ben

62

Gladiator; Tommy Boy

For Uncle Ben, a small but pivotal role, a strong, likable actor is needed. This may be my favorite choice.

Fred Ward as JJJ

57

Tremors; Corky Romano

JJJ, in this movie would be played the same. Over the top. In the new movie, I hope he's played straight so as not to draw too many comparisons to Simmons. Ward can do over the top and has a strong jaw and is quite intimidating.

Larry Drake as Dr Ock

50

Darkman; Dr Giggles

He is exactly what Ock should look like. I've stated before, when I was young, I thought Ock was modeled after him. I was a bit confused.

Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Curt Connors

37

Red Dragon

Connors, a professor at Parker's college is obsessed, in the background, with finding out a way to cure his amputated arm. By the end of the sequel, he looks proudly upon a liquid, and sheds some tears. He makes a phone call to his wife declaring a cure. The Lizard wreaks havoc in the finale.

Fiennes, an exceptionally good actor, can play slightly demented and mild-mannered at the same time better than most.

Carl Weathers as Robbie Robertson

52

Rocky; Happy Gilmore

I love Weathers. He's be great in a so many different roles. Here's just 1

Clancy Brown as Cpt Stacy

41

Highlander

He has this unbelievable presence that is both scary and mystifying. I tend to cast him, like many others, as a villain, but I'll try this time as one of the few people that support Spider-Man from the very beginning. He is the complete opposite of JJJ and actually is a big reason why the city gets behind Spider-Man. Doc Ock kills him.

***wow, I just saw this on wikipedia...

He played police captain George Stacy in The Spectacular Spider-Man, as well as supervillain The Rhino. Recently, he also appeared on Wolverine and the X-Men as the villainous Mr. Sinister. He voices Odin in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Brown made a guest appearance in The Incredible Hulk as The Sasquatch. Brown has been cast for a role in Ultimate Spider-Man in 2012

The Sequel
Amazing Spider-Man

Sees Spider-Man, a city hero, invited to a welcoming home party for astronauts, one being JJJ's son. Black goo latches onto Spidey. Brock enters the picture and his story stays true to the comics. Gwen dies at the hands of Green Goblin who is killed by an uncontrollable black-suited Web-slinger. Dr. Conners goes missing into the sewers after a mutation is hinted. MJ plays a small role, not yet a love interest. Harry hates Spider-Man after the city finds out thast the Goblin was his father. The movie ends with the transformation of Venom.

Elisha Cuthbert as MJ

18 years old

24

She looks exactly like Romita's artwork. Slap a red wig on and call it a day.

Cole Hauser as Eddie Brock/Venom

25

Hart's War

He is a bit older, the way it should be. He has these crazy eyes and a great build, another asset that lacked on film. He is a dependable actor that fellow actors like to use over and over.

The Finale
Spectacular Spider-Man

As the Lizard tears up the city, the anti-hero, Kraven, the Hunter, attempts to tracks him down. Venom hunts Parker. Parker must both save and stop his friend, the Dr. cursed with this mutation. Kraven, in heaven, wants to capture all 3. In the end, Lizard kills Kraven and is permanently healed by SM. Parker opens up to the idea of moving on... some time down the road... with MJ. Venom is apprehended and he and the suit are separated. The movie ends with a small part of the alien still in the fingernails of Brock sliding off of him as he sleeps in jail. the goo falls onto his red-headed bunk mate. The cell mate's veins turn red and the credits role.

Viggo Mortensen as Kraven

42

The Prophecy; LotR

Originally I like Viggo as Osborn and Bean as Kraven. i switched it and it was a better fit.

Some, like Joseph Gordon-Levvit, I could see in the role, others, I think should just stick with the ones already cast from the Raimi films.

This was great. Dr. Giggles as Dr. Octopus is right on. JGL as Parker/SM??? I can see that. Great castings man. Cheers!

Good stuff. JGL would've made a fantastic Spidey back in the day, but I think he's getting a bit too old now.

which ones were better and which worse? just curious.

I will be doing Hulk and Punisher. The way I see it, X-Men put the MCU on the map so im not doing Blade; that, and, it was such a small cast, really just him, Frost, Whistler and the woman, i dont think its worth it

I like JGL but I would have loved to see Jake Gyllenhal as Spiderman. Fred Ward would be good as JJJ but I think Joe Pantoliano would be perfect.Elisha Cuthbert would be a better Felicia Hardy. I would have cast Eliza Dushku as MJ. the rest are good.

Jake is 1 of my fav actors and i wouldve'would love to see him in many roles but, as you may know, he was very close to replacing Tobey if his back couldnt deal with the stress of the part. cuz of that obviousness AND cuz ive already used him in my X-Men cast, though the 2 dont share the same universe in my projected movies, i did not use him. Joey Pants wouldve been great, didnt even occur to me. Cuthbert was on my mind for that very reason, but as i fleshed out the story, Black Cat wasnt fitting, so i opted for her as MJ. Dushku, oddly was an option, however i used her as Jean Grey in X-Men. thanks for all the input

I wasn't convinced 100% about some of your picks UNTIL i read the explanation. You really out done your self. If you can top this, I will deem you best caster on this site. Larry Drake is beyond genius. you must know how Reed Richards fills in a room full of scholars.

Awesome fancast! Out of all of your picks, my favorite is probably Viggo Mortensen as Kraven. I still think he'd be good in the role today if they use Kraven in one of the sequels to TASM btw.

Nice casting, especially Doc Ock. Viggo would make a good Kraven but I may ask this guy to audition

not bad I like I think JGL would still be great for older spidey (although IMO garfields perfect). Jake Gyllenhall was pretty close to getting the role for the sequel. And I didn't have a problem with Tobey in the first movie but after that I don't know if it was the writing or his acting but parker just got whiny

- Since when is JGL not beloved around here? Heck, he's good for Spider-Man back then and now!
- Never have gotten into Sophia Myles films to understand her. Wasn't she in Tristan and Isolde with fellow Spider-Man star James Franco?
- Speak of the devil! Great pick for Harry Osborn. Foster could've nailed it if he planned on playing disturbed earlier in his career.
- I don't know if Sean Bean has the Green Goblin's voice, but he does have the looks for Norman Osborn.
- You know, Brian Dennehy's role in Tommy Boy fully epitomized Uncle Ben to a T. If not Cliff Robertson, Dennehy would've been aces!
- It's about time you gave a decent role to Ralph Fiennes that isn't completely a villain! I'm tired of seeing him cast as Norman Osborn all the time. You probably know I used that picture of Lizard for my fancast!
- Neato pick for Robbie! Throwing in one of the stars of Predators is worthy of a kudos on your behalf.
- My only problem with Cuthbert as MJ is that she's a little too petite and tiny for the role. MJ stands at a model's height (Cuthbert's a model, I'm told) of 5'8". Maybe Kelly Brook would've been good if she was well known at the time.
- Too bad Cole Hauser isn't doing much memorable work anymore. His filmography reeks of shit (Tyler Perry, 'nuff said). But I think he would've made a great splash as a more age/height appropriate Eddie Brock.
- I think I saw Viggo cast as Kraven quite a few times in fancasts for a modern franchise. And he's done the Russian accent in Eastern Promises. I hope Kraven appears in the new Spider-Man franchise if anything.
