BATMAN
K  N  I  G  H  T  H  O  O  D

Old wounds are reopened when the Red Hood, a mysterious vigilante from Batman's past, begins cleaning up Gotham City more efficiently than the Dark Knight himself, but doesn't follow the same ethical code. When The Joker falls in the balance between the two, once buried memories come to light.

When Roman Sionis aka Black Mask is arrested for being a major drug supplier within Gotham, Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin, becomes the undisputed crime lord of Gotham City. However, a vigilante that goes by the name of the Red Hood starts sabotaging The Penguin’s operations. The Penguin recruits Victor Fries aka Mister Freeze, to help him maintain his leadership of organized crime in Gotham. In exchange, The Penguin builds Mister Freeze a new, high-tech cryo-suit.

Batman, with the help of Nightwing, strikes against a shipment of The Penguin's, but are confronted by Mister Freeze. They manage to defeat him, ending with his arrest, although Nightwing is critically wounded in the fight. Batman spots the Red Hood seizing The Penguin’s shipment and gives chase. He informs Alfred of the situation and has the Batmobile transport Nightwing to the Batcave so Alfred can provide him with medical attention. During the chase, the Red Hood performs maneuvers similar to Batman's and Nightwing’s, cutting one of Batman's cables with a knife he escapes.

Back at the Batcave, Batman reviews the footage from the chase, recalling Jason Todd (the second Robin) performing similar manoeuvres. In a flashback it's revealed that when Jason Todd was Robin, he was brutally murdered at the hands of The Joker and Harley Quinn. The Penguin sets up a meeting with the Red Hood. He attempts to make him a deal, offering a him a generous percentage of his earnings if he stays out of his way. The Red Hood declines and kills all of The Penguin’s henchman.

Commissioner Gordon meets with Batman and tells him they apprehended Mister Freeze at the docks and he’s being put in Arkham as they speak. They conclude that with The Penguin’s right hand man now locked up in Arkham and the majority of his crew killed by the Red Hood, he’s vulnerable and an all out gang-war could break out.

The Penguin hires Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke to assassinate the Red Hood. Deathstroke tracks down the Red Hood and attacks him. Clearly the better fighter, Deathstroke manages to overpower the Red Hood but before he can finish him Batman intervenes. Working together, both Batman and the Red Hood are able to defeat Deathstroke, although he manages to escape. Batman argues with the Red Hood about his crime-fighting methods and offers to help him, but the Red Hood rebuffs his attempts to help and leaves.

Batman gathers a sample of the Red Hood’s blood off of Deathstroke’s sword and takes it to the Batcave for analysis. After his DNA comes back with a match to Jason Todd, a shocked Bruce digs up Jason’s grave, finding his coffin empty. He leaves to seek answers from Talia al Ghul.

Travelling to Arabia, Batman confronts Talia demanding answers about Todd’s resurrection. Talia admits that she and her father felt responsible for what happened to Jason as the two had collaborated with The Joker and Harley Quinn at the time. However, Jason’s death was not part of their arrangement. Talia and her father, Ra’s al Ghul, revived Jason using the Lazarus Pit. However, when Jason discovered that The Joker was still loose and Batman hadn’t avenged his death it drives him crazy.

The Penguin calls a meeting with other Gotham criminals, consisting of Harvey Dent aka Two-Face, Arnold Wesker aka The Ventriloquist and The Joker and Harley Quinn. He hopes to form a truce between them until the Red Hood is dealt with. Arriving back in Gotham City, Alfred informs Batman of The Penguin's meeting location, where Nightwing has the place staked out. Figuring out the Red Hood’s next move, Batman contact’s Commissioner Gordon alerting him to where the meeting is taking place.

While Two-Face, The Ventriloquist agree to a truce, The Joker and Harley do not and attack the others. The Joker puts a bullet in Wesker's head and Harley shoots The Penguin. Deathstroke steps in to save his employer from the shootout. Batman and Nightwing burst in disarming The Joker and Harley while Two-Face makes escape. Working together, Batman and Nightwing are eventually able to take down Deathstroke. However, during the fight, the Red Hood captures The Joker and heads to Ace Chemicals.

Gordon has his GCPD unit move in on the remaining criminals. Nightwing stays back to ensure none of them manage to escape before their arrest, especially Deathstroke, while Batman takes off in pursuit of the Red Hood and The Joker.  Batman finds the Red Hood at Ace Chemicals brutally beating The Joker with a crowbar, like The Joker did to him. Batman fights the Red Hood to stop him from beating The Joker to death and in the scuffle he removes his helmet, confirming that he truly is Jason Todd.

Jason holds Batman at gunpoint and tells him that he forgives him for not saving him, but can’t forgive him for allowing the Joker to live. Batman confesses to Jason that he’s always wanted to kill the Joker, but will not allow himself the pleasure out of fear of fully succumbing to it.

Jason tosses Batman his other gun and gives him an ultimatum: Jason is going to kill The Joker, and the only way Batman can stop him is by fatally shooting Jason himself. Batman refuses, dropping the gun and walking away. Angered, Jason shoots at Batman, but he dodges the bullet and throws a batarang into the barrel of his gun, causing a small explosion that critically injuries Jason's gun hand.

Wanting them all to die together, the Joker lunges for the dropped gun and starts shooting up the place, in hopes of causing an explosion so they all die together. Batman attempts to save Jason before the building explodes, but The Joker stops him. The building blows and Batman and The Joker make it out alive but there is no trace of Jason.

The Joker is taken into custody and returned to Arkham Asylum while The Penguin and Deathstroke are arrested and imprisoned in Blackgate Penitentiary. Back at the Batcave, Alfred asks Bruce if he should remove the memorial display case containing Jason's Robin uniform. Batman replies that nothing has changed and he departs in the Batmobile. The film ends with a flashback of Jason's first day as Robin, eagerly climbing into the Batmobile and declaring that it's the best day of his life.

  • Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne aka Batman
Affleck reprises his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League

  • Jared Leto as The Joker
Leto reprises his role from Suicide Squad.

  • Margot Robbie as Dr. Harleen Quinzel aka Harley Quinn
Robbie reprises her role from Suicide Squad.

  • Emory Cohen as Jason Todd aka Red Hood
After seeing his performances in The Place Beyond the Pines, Beneath the Harvest Sky and Stealing Cars Cohen was an obvious choice for the role of Jason Todd.

  • John Goodman as Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin
Goodman has proved time and time again that he can play a large assortment of roles, but it’s his work in The Big Lebowski, The Gambler and 10 Cloverfield Lane that makes believe he’d be able to breathe new life into this character.

  • Joe Manganiello as Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke
Manganiello keeps himself in very good physical shape, a key aspect for a character such as Deathstroke. I’d check him out in True Blood and Sabotage to get an idea of what he’d bring to the role.

  • Indira Varma as Talia al Ghul
Varma stars in HBO’s Game of Thrones as Ellaria Sand, a character with similar traits to Talia al Ghul. Her performance here is enough to convince me she would be an ideal choice.

  • J.K. Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon
J.K. Simmons reprises his role from Justice League.

  • Kit Harington as Dick Grayson aka Nightwing
Harington’s heroic role as Jon Snow in HBO’s Game of Thrones makes me believe he’d be a great addition to the DCEU as Nightwing. His roles in Pompeii, Seventh Son and MI-5 show that he can handle action roles. Coming off of Game of Thrones, he also has enough star power for a potential lead role in a Nightwing spin-off / stand alone film

  • Zeljko Ivanek as Victor Fries aka Mister Freeze
Ivanek’s minor role in The Bourne Legacy was all I needed to see for me to believe he’d be able to give us a chilling new take on Mister Freeze. He also had a role in Ben Affleck’s Argo too, so brownie points for that.

  • Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth
Jeremy Irons reprises his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

  • Jon Hamm … Harvey Dent aka Two-Face
Hamm’s role as Don Draper in
Mad Men and as FBI Agent Adam Frawley in The Town are all the convincing I need. Although this role wouldn’t be much more than an extended cameo, it keeps the option open for him to return in a later instalment in a more substantial role.

  • David Costabile as Arnold Wesker aka The Ventriloquist
Costabile’s turn as Gale in AMC’s Breaking Bad helps me envision him as Wesker. In the film he has a very minor role and serves more as a nod / easter egg to the fans.

  • Titus Welliver as Roman Sionis aka Black Mask
Welliver is a frequent collaborator of Affleck’s having appeared in The Town, Argo and soon to be Live by Night. But it’s his role in Transformers: Age of Extinction that makes me believe he’s a good fit for Black Mask. While the film itself is terrible, Welliver’s plays a great bad guy.

@cbostont102 - Thanks. I've got more coming too, currently working on a potential Gotham City Sirens pitch set within the DCEU.

@MrMM - I agree with most cast, but I think Jon Hamm should take over from Cavill as Superman.

I would much prefer to see that or him play another Bat villain. I just think as Two-Face unless they do something very special it would be a waste. I've never found Two-Face that compelling as a Bat villain.

Also would rather Riddler be the Bat villain in the next instalment.

@aresww3 - I think Henry Cavill is great as Superman, he just hasn't been given the best material (especially in BvS). I do agree that Hamm would make a great Superman ala a Kingdom Come storyline. My personal choice for an older Superman has got to be Billy Crudup, but Hamm comes in second.

I think Hamm could do something really special with Two-Face. While Eckhart was a great Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight, I think Hamm can play the other side of the coin and portray a fantastic Two-Face.

It's funny you mention The Riddler, he's probably going to pop up in my next article.

@MrMM - Um Heckart was garbage in my opinion as Two Face. The Dark Knight was a one man performance film. I don´t even rate the script that much. I think Batman Begins script was a lot tighter. Ledger literally made that movie legendary cos of his bonkers performance.

@aresww3 - As Two-Face? Yeah, I can understand that. Given the time that he was actually Two-Face. But it's hard to fault his performance in the majority of the film as Harvey Dent in my opinion.

This feels like an adaptation of the DTV adaptation of Under the Red Hood. Whatever the case, I can't be against it. The cast is pretty good too.

DetectiveCinema - 9/16/2016, 4:33 PM
@MikeZ - I definitely did use Under the Red Hood as my main source of inspiration. I feel it's such a perfect story for Affleck to adapt, especially after the hints and references to the fate of Jason Todd in both BvS and Suicide Squad.

Cheers man

Good cast, really enjoyed it.

Only ones I would change is Priyanka Chopra for Talia, good actress and has the vampish aspect of the character. A good actress with the right role.

Hrithik ROshan

Bollywood actor, has played some great roles, mainly as the Anti Hero in Agneepath. Is in fantastic shape as well.

It's not a bad story, but it's basically a more cluttered, live-action Under the Red Hood.

Unfortunately, I disagree with a lot of your casting choices.

Cohen is a great actor and could probably do Jason Todd justice, but he's way too short. He'd look like a kid next to Affleck and Manganiello (he'd be 10 inches shorter than Joe). A better pick, without compromising the acting skills, is IMO Bill Skarsgård (who might be too tall, actually).

Goodman, is a great actor as well but at 6'2", he's way too physically imposing to be the Penguin. John Hodgman would be my pick.

Indira Varma is really good in GOT, but feels like playing it safe. I'd love to see Nazanin Boniadi as Talia though.

And then there's Kit. As much as I'd like to see him be Nightwing, he suffers from the same issue as Cohen. At 5'8", he'd be too short. So I don't know, Garrett Hedlund?

Jon Hamm, as great as he would be as Harvey Dent, needs to be Hush if he joins the DCEU.

DetectiveCinema
DetectiveCinema - 9/16/2016, 5:27 PM
@Philip - Mmm, I wouldn't say it's more cluttered (especially as Two-Face, Ventriloquist and Black Mask don't have more than extended cameos).

Cohen isn't too short for the role at all, as the second robin it makes more sense for him to be as he is younger. He's not supposed to measure up to Batman or Deathstroke, that's part of the appeal, because he's not nearly as big as them but can still hold his own.

In my opinion The Penguin SHOULD be physically imposing! Think of him more as an Emperor Penguin ;) The idea of a short, round, comical Penguin reminiscent of DeVito and Meredith's is a bit dated now and wouldn't at all fit in to the DCEU.

In regards to Indira Varma that I can agree with you on, her role on Game of Thrones is basically an audition for Talia. However there's no doubt she'd nail the part. Nazanin Boniadi I haven't heard of or seen, but she certainly looks the part.

I can't understand your issue with his height, it really doesn't matter anymore man. Just look at Tom Hardy as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Tom's 5'7 and still managed to make him physically imposing to Bale's (6'0) Batman.

Agree to disagree, Damian Lewis needs to be Hush.
Philip
Philip - 9/17/2016, 2:27 AM
@MrMM - I adressed the Cohen issue down below, so I'll just answer the rest up here.

Doesn't really matter if Two-Face, Ventriloquist and Black Mask are extended cameos. Given their importance in Batman lore, we'd have the Joker issue from SS all over again, and the characters would not be given the development they need to be of any importance. You're also including Mr. Freeze, Harley Quinn, the Penguin, Deathstroke and Talia. So yes, it's more cluttered.

The Penguin isn't a physical villain, so I don't see why he should be physically imposing. But fair enough.

And you never heard of or seen Nazanin Boniadi? You've never seen How I Met Your Mother or Homeland?

First of all, Hardy's 5'9", not 5'7". And the height matters, which is why Hardy wore lifts in TDKR. Tom Hardy's Bane worked because Hardy was massive in every other way, so he looked more natural even with the 3" lifts he wore. But if you want truly acrobatic and better choreographed fight scenes, lifts is a no go. Especially if you'd need about five more inches.
DetectiveCinema
DetectiveCinema - 9/18/2016, 4:07 PM
@Philip - So, what you're saying is in place of Two-Face, Ventriloquist and Black Mask you'd prefer it be Thug #1, Thug #2 and Thug #3? Including established characters from the Batman mythos helps create world building. Are they important characters? Yes. Do they need to be front and centre all the time? Not at all. But they all have a place in the story. It's establishing key characters in this universe.

Mister Freeze only features in the first act, we've already been introduced to Harley, The Penguin is established from the start of the story, Deathstroke is introduced in the second act, as is Talia. All these characters featured in the story have purpose, and help to naturally progress the story.

I think The Penguin should be imposing because he's often considered a bit of a joke as a villain, and having someone like John Goodman step into the role would do wonders for the character. Being the top dog in Gotham City he's got to feel threatening, otherwise it comes across as unrealistic how he gets in his position.

I've seen both Homeland and HIMYM actually, is she just not a central character in either?

So, if Cohen bulked up similar to how Hardy did (although obviously not as much, because Bane is meant to be massive) it would solve most, if not all issues? Plus Cohen is listed as only being 4cm shorter than Hardy..

Being suited up in costume as well would undoubtedly add a little bit more height. But I think if you're basing your choices primarily off of height you're missing the point here, height difference in a movie these days really isn't as big an issue as you're making it out to be.

My choices for Red Hood and Penguin would be Jim Sturgess and Steve Carell, personally.
Philip
Philip - 9/16/2016, 3:56 PM
@Miguile - Sturgess is too old for Red Hood, unfortunately. At 38, he's only 6 years younger than Affleck and at best, 10 years younger than Batman.

Carell as Penguin is interesting though.

This is a great cast and the story is a great read. I like Kit Harrington as Nightwing he would be great. And the actor for Red Hood is good too haven't seen him in much but he looks the part.

Also in the comics i think Jason Todd was 5ft3 inches. With Tim Drake being 5ft5 so it could work. John Goodman is a great actor and could make a good modern penguin. I imagine Ben could get him to sign on for the role. The Talia choice is good too. Can't wait for The Batman movie. This was a great read good job
DetectiveCinema
DetectiveCinema - 9/16/2016, 6:05 PM
@Jayman - Thanks man! I'd check him out The Place Beyond The Pines in regards to Cohen, that film in particular sold me on him as Jason Todd.

After working together with Ben on Argo I'd like to think he could too.
Philip
Philip - 9/17/2016, 2:06 AM
@Jayman - Jason Todd was 5'3" as a child. Adult Jason Todd/Red Hood is 6'0" in the comics.

@MrMM you too mentioned above that Cohen's height isn't an issue because he's the second Robin and therefore a bit younger. This would have been true if this Todd would have been in his early teens. Same goes for the "it's part of the appeal"-argument, it does not apply to an adult Todd.

An adult, 5'7" Jason Todd/Robin/Red Hood, will always be 5'7".

Also, Batman is 6'2" in the comics, so yes, Todd is nearly as big as him.
Jayman
Jayman - 9/17/2016, 12:08 PM
@Philip - Thanks for the info man I appreciate it. I didn't know that Jason was 6ft when he was older. If that's the case I think Jensen Ackles could make a great Red Hood too. As he's 6ft1 and did a great job voicing him in the animated film.
Jayman
Jayman - 9/17/2016, 12:10 PM
@MrMM - Your welcome man. I will try to check that film out to see him sounds great. its Great that John has worked with Ben he could be interested in The Batman movie there both great actors
Philip
Philip - 9/17/2016, 12:15 PM
@Jayman - Ackles did do a great job voicing the character, but he's already 38 and way too old for a second Robin. It's a shame, there's plenty of people that would have been perfect for Red Hood out there, but they're all in their late 30s.
kong

Really nice! Great job!

However I'd have Toby Kebbel play Jason. He needs a second chance at a CBM villain role. The only problems with that is hat he's in his mid 30's, but he can still play 20's. Especially someone in there twenties that's been killed and revived like Jason has.

I love Goodman as Penguin. Inspired choice.

However, my choice for Black Mask is Giancarlo Esposito.

DetectiveCinema
DetectiveCinema - 9/18/2016, 4:09 PM
@kong - Giancarlo would make a great Black Mask, but given his prominence in my take, an actor of his calibre would be wasted in such a role.

Kebbel definitely deserves a second shot in a CBM, I think he'd make a good Ocean Master perhaps?

Nice cast, I'm not a big fan on your Jason Todd choice though. He may have the acting chops, but he isn't imposing. Red Hood is fkin imposing. And this...

Doesn't scream imposing at all..

Just me idk :/

I think Jack O'Connel would be perfect tho

If not him, then maybe Matt Lanter?

And if not him, then...**hold it now, don't lose it..give him a chance**..Andrew Garfield (the deleted scene with his dad screamed Jason Todd)

From 1:55 to 2:50 ...

imo that is Jason Todd to me
