In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes, a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Elysium stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga and William Fitchner. The film is set to hit theaters August 9th.

The concept of this movie has a premise that makes you think.

What's the solution here?

You have millions or more of people living in a third world, and a smaller number of selfish individuals benefiting from the misery by staying in a paradise they created. Those in the third world understandably want to come to the paradise.

But then what?

The 3rd world people, although poor, have lived a harsher lifestyle, won't be as educated, will have been involved in some manner with criminal activity (gangs, drugs) just to have power and get richer, and will have a completely different mindset to those in the paradise.

Inevitably the small slice of paradise which can't sustain those people will becomes exactly the same as the 3rd world they left.

So everyone flocking to paradise isn't the solution.

The only solution I can think of, would be for those in the paradise to help fix the 3rd world...otherwise they all end up living in one.

@MrCritic

Hah, yeah.
Well that's just one way to describe it.

I personally believe though that if we did ever find an idyllic planet similar to Earth or create something close to it, our planet would become one big '3rd world'.

The wealthy and elite would never start busing over the poor from the ghettos and trailer parks. The criminals or those with a criminal record too. They'd all stay right here.

It wouldn't make sense in a way, and knowing how elitists/power-brokers/celebrities love special treatment it would be an impossibility for anyone below their status to get sent on an expensive trip to 'paradise'.

Can anyone see them going to a Favela and rounding up people to go into space for a paradise-like world? Families in the Philippines used to rummaging through garbage for a living being rounded up from their shacks and sent into space? Impoverished Haitians? Mexicans? Poor Whites in trailer parks? Chinese villagers that mine for a living?

Never.

This planet would simply become a place that provided the goods and services for the other one.

Hell, it'd be very hard for any of the middle-class to get out of Earth, and most of us right here would never go anywhere but.

@damntree LOL well maybe she will love me!

If we marry I guess that would make me your stepfather.

Prepare for massive ass-whippings when I catch you trying to chat-up the little girls in my 9th grade class.

I am looking forward to Sharlto Copley in this movie. He looks so freaking badass and is probably going to be an awesome villain. I bet him and Damon's fight scenes are going to be amazing. I love it when there are great, original scifi movies out there to gives us something new to watch other than crappy reboots or sequels to movies.

@Humperdink and JediPhilosopher: You guys are onto something. In addition, It's simple to see that maybe a few that are trying to break into Elysium don't necessarily want to be or live there. I can see a group of rebels wanting equality and the only way to get it is invade, take over and redistribute wealth back into Earth. Maybe in this movie i'm guessing the people on Elysium have control of most of Earths wealth accumulated from the working class to help build this thing. Maybe the people and their families who helped build it is being mistreated and the resources of Earth is unfairly in a recessive state to set this thing up in space. I dunno i'm just assuming...But this movie looks to be one interesting political, science fiction, action movie.
