There comes a time where I often wonder what I'm doing to myself by watching terrible super hero films. They havent been reviewed yet but I'll touch on some of the few I've seen so far: Daredevil, Iron Man 3, all of the Spider-Man films, just to name a few. But the franchise I'm about to review is universally hated by all that love MARVEL and probably dont love MARVEL but watch the movies anyway. I'm talking about the Fantastic Four. Since the series is essentially on life support at the moment, I figured I'd do this now before the inevitable reboot to a reboot to the original comes out and we all come full circle. I'm excluding the movie that came out in the 90s mainly because I couldnt find it. I'm sure it was better than the 2015 reboot, though.
3. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
I had high hopes for this movie, I really did. I enjoyed the first one and hoped this one would be better. Why, God, why? Oh hey look out its the Silver Surfer, why is he here, when are Reed and Sue going to get married? Why on earth would they consider hanging up the superhero boots after saving the world ONE TIME?! I liked the whole "switching powers" aspect, it would of been cool to see The Thing turn into Mr. Fantastic and vice versa. The group having to team with Doom because of the military? Meh. I'm not really big into the whole "we have to work together" thing because it normally NEVER works out in the end. The baddie known as Galactus? A massive cloud that eats planets. Hooray!
Calm down, the only reason why this movie is at #2 is because it's leaps and bounds better than Silver Surfer. Yes, the acting could of been a little bit better and yes, the writing could of been a lot better written, but for what it's worth, it was a decent popcorn movie. Yes, a decent popcorn movie. I understand this movie flopped because the director terrible at his job but the movie had one decent aspect to it....Doom. Cold, calculated, heartless....this version of Doom was pretty badass and if there is eventually a sequel, I hope they bring back the guy who played him. The fighting in a different dimension of sorts was also different from the first time, which I enjoyed quite a bit. I just didnt like the monotone Sue Storm...at least show some emotion!
I dont know why this one is hated as it's by far the best one of the series. No Silver Surfer, no monotone teens in a reboot, just good ol fun. I kinda wish MARVEL had this film with the same cast, probably woulda done away with the whole Doom/Sue/Reed love triangle which was NOT needed in this film. What is it with superhero movies that need love triangles? Stop already. Anyway, Doom, of course, is badass in this movie and the fights are pretty amazing. Not a knock on the reboot cast but the portrayal of the characters in this film are 10/10.
