Nice. The Tempest has not only had its own comic series, but the story or characters from it have featured in quite a few other series including Sandman and Hercules. If you have never read it or find Shakespeare a bit of a bore, the comic is the way to go as it really is a classic tale.

This film adaptation is directed by Julie Taymor who previously directed an adap of another Shakespeare classic Titus with Anthony Hopkins(check it out, its class). The basic plot of the movie is..

Going back to the 16th or 17th century, women practicing the magical arts of alchemy were often convicted of witchcraft. In Taymor's version, Prospera is usurped by her brother and sent off with her four-year daughter on a ship. She ends up on an island; it's a tabula rasa: no society, so the mother figure becomes a father figure to Miranda. This leads to the power struggle and balance between Caliban and Prospera; a struggle not about brawn, but about intellect

Helen Mirren will play Prospera(changing gender from the original Prospero) and Djimon Hounsou will play the beast man Caliban. The supporting cast includes David Strathairn, Djimon Hounsou, Reeve Carney, Alan Cumming, Alfred Molina, Chris Cooper, Felicity Jones, Ben Whishaw and Russell Brand.

Taymor directed "Titus", so I know this is gonna be a goody. Titus was bad-ass!!! Still don't know why that movie never got the recognition of Mel Gibsons Hamlet, or Leo's version of Romeo and Juliet, it's right up there with those, imo. Will definitely check this one out

I had a great English teacher my senior year who really had a way with explaining Shakespeare's plays, and getting us into the stories. One of the plays we read was The Tempest, which I really enjoyed. This looks like an interesting adaptation of the story, so I'll definitely be watching for more on this. Thanks for sharing this, Ror. You're absolutely right about the profound influence The Tempest has had on comics and other aspects of geek culture over the years.

Looks pretty awesome! But I'm still hoping for a truly EPIC version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream". With all the fantasy and comic book type stuff in that (not to mention all of the refrences by the likes of Neil Gaiman & Disney's Gargoyles, to name a few), I think it would play more like "A Midsummer Night's Wet-Dream" for a lot of us here! :-D
