The fine folks over at Collider recently had the opportunity to sprinkle in some questions about Peter Jackson's adaption of the fantasy classic, The Hobbit to actor Benedict Cumberbatch; who will be voicing the dragon Smaug. Here's the brief video and transcript.

Collider: So what’s it like to voice Smaug in The Hobbit?

Cumberbatch: "I’m playing Smaug, I mean I’m physicalizing him as a dragon I’m not just doing the voiceover, so it’ll be a physical role which I’m no stranger to. I did Frankenstein at the beginning of the year with Danny Boyle at the National Theater and playing the creature in that was a very full on and sort of corporeal experience. I can’t wait, but the conversations have yet to start really in earnest because they’ve been doing the first film and I’ve been doing the second series of Sherlock and another series which I’m working on now called Parade’s End for HBO and BBC with Tom Stoppard, and Rebecca Hall co-starring, so it’s a world away but come a month’s time we’ll start conversations probably like you and I are having down the line. I’ve already started working out and doing various movement exercises to get myself limber for that all-important jump suit with balls on it, otherwise known as motion-capture. But I can’t wait, I’m really excited. I go to film it in January."

Hmm. The interesting thing to take away from this interview is that Cumberbatch will not only be voicing Smaug but he'll also be in a motion capture suit, a la Andy Serkis.

The Hobbit is an upcoming two-part epic fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson. It is a film adaptation of the 1937 novel of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien and a prequel to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings, returns as director of the film and also serves as producer and co-writer.

The film will star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug. Several actors from Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy will reprise their roles, including Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom. Also returning for the production are a big part of the production crew; among others, illustrators John Howe and Alan Lee, art director Dan Hennah and cinematographer Andrew Lesnie. As with the trilogy, props will generally be crafted by Weta Workshop and visual effects managed by Weta Digital. Additionally, composer Howard Shore, who wrote the score for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has confirmed his role in both parts of the film project.

The two parts, titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, are being filmed back to back and are in production in New Zealand; principal photography began on 21 March 2011. They are scheduled to be released on 14 December 2012 and 13 December 2013, respectively.

Casting Cumberbatch as Smaug is a stroke of Genius. I'm I the only one who think he'd make a good Doctor Strange?

@pacman - It's the cheese that sticks to the top of a pizza delivery box. You know, the stuff you peel off , paperboard and all, and eat when you're too drunk to care.

He was a very charming Sherlock Holmes, but outside of that he's a baby faced actor. This is very interesting though.

Im sure he will be great but i kinda would have liked to see someone more iconic actor play Smaug.
You know someone like Christopher Lee. Not him thou cause he is Saruman (Although he would be [frick]ing awesome in the role). But i think someone like Derek Jacobi or John Hurt would be amazing. Or Gary Oldman, Bill Nighy, Ralph Fiennes, Patrick Stewart or Ben Kingsley.

^^ I think Hollywood is starting to give huge roles to the young and new. It's a good thing actually, using the same iconic actor gets pretty boring after a while. Out with the old, in with the new! XD

dmm5@ Yeah true. It is fair to give the new actors a chance to shine too. ;)

So why do we need a motion-capture suit for Smaug? I don't get that, but I do trust Peter Jackson to have found the right voice for his dragon. I just hope this movie turns out as good as the LOTR films.
