Set in the Middle Ages, the evil wizard Gargamel discovers the Smurfs' village and chases them into a wooded area. The Smurfs get scattered and Clumsy Smurf wanders into a "forbidden" grotto and some of the other Smurfs follow. Since it's also a blue moon, a magical portal within the grotto transports them into present-day Central Park in New York. They take shelter with married couple Patrick and Grace Winslow and try to find a way back to their village before Gargamel finds them.

The Smurfs arrive in theaters June 29th, later this year!

They look terrible. And I don't like the Katy Perry reference (yeah I know Katy's voicing her). Looks like it could be worse than Alvin and the Chipmunks (the saving grace of that film was the hot woman in the first film), but this film won't get that because Katy Perry's only doing the voice, and isn't going to be physically in the film.
To quote grif: "[frick] this shit, bring on the [Smurf] reboot"

here we go again. I guess some of you people have never hung out in a comic shop, preferring to buy yours from Barnes & Noble or Wal-Mart or off the internet. Anyone who has ever set foot in a comic shop would realize right away how much this website is like one. In a good comic shop, we talk about all kinds of stuff that comic geeks find of interest, and cartoons certainly qualify. Many people here grew up watching the Smurfs, and they'd certainly have an opinion about a Smurf movie. Why not bring it up?

I think this film looks like harmless fluffy retro fun. I'd sure go see it over a lot of the crap that's coming out this summer.

It was a comic strip before it was a cartoon. But anyway...

When a movie uses Tone Loc's WILD THING beyond 1992, you know you have one of the finest failures in production.

Notice the cheap way they bring the Smurf's into the city instead of making an entire CGI cartoon in Smurf Village. They're trying to cash in on the Alvin and Chipmunk fluke. Because it is so insultingly void of creativity and is an obvious cash grab, I hope they lose their shirts on this one.

@Illuminatus... you got the funniest comment in regards to this movie bar none!

@Ghostt: this site reports comic book movies (and sometimes tv series), ALL of them, regardless of it being junk or not.

mmmm Smurfette needs boobs.

Evidently, my point was missed. My point is that conversations in comic shops often go off on tangents that have nothing to do with comic books, but ARE related to some of the many other things that many comic geeks also enjoy. To suggest that the comic shop owner is going to demand that you discuss the Smurf movie before discussing the new issue of Daredevil is completely ridiculous and misses my point entirely.

Neo: They're doing the Smurfs in the "real world" because it's a gimmick that has been used successfully before. Remember, Hollywood is all about repeating what has worked in the past until it no longer works. Besides, that gimmick appeals to kids, who ARE the primary target for this movie.
