There has been a lot of speculation on whether Cobra Commander will be a completely new character, or whether his character will be developed from the previous film. During an interview with AICN, director John Chu finally shed some light on the matter.

I don’t know where all this crazy, speculative stuff came from. We were asked the question, Lorenzo [di Bonaventura, Producer) and I at Toy Fair...

"Is that the same actor?"

"I was like...No, its not the same actor."

"Is that Joseph Gordon Levitt?"

"No, it is not! But it is Rex!"

"We are continuing that story, there is no other Cobra Commander. We can put that rumor to rest. I was waiting for this moment to finally clarify, I’m glad you asked that."

So no Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but Rex? Sounds good to me!

A follow-up to the 2009 release of G.I. JOE: RISE OF THE COBRA, which grossed over $300M worldwide, Paramount Pictures, MGM and Skydance Productions, in association with HASBRO and di Bonaventura Pictures, commences production on G.I. JOE: RETALIATION. In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.

It had to be the same guy, otherwise the first film was just pointless. After seeing it the second time in theaters I pretty much decided it was kind of a set up film.

The first movie was awful. It was only enjoyable if I was able to meditate myself back to being 9 years-old and watching the cartoon. This one already looks better, although that won't be difficult to accomplish because of how truly detestable "Rise of Cobra" was. I will go see this, just like I did the first one. I won't expect it to be more than a pile of crap, so I doubt I'll be disappointed. At least I'll get to look at Adrienne Palicki. Maybe it's my Pavlovian conditioning, but I see that woman and immediately smell Lubriderm.

Hmmm... So I wonder how they'll explain the lack of Destro...

From May:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is not in this movie. Under the mask, is this the same character that Levitt played?

No. But we figured out a way that's pretty nice. And you get the Cobra Commander that you've always wanted. Or, to me, what I always wanted: a bad-ass villain. He's one of the most iconic villains ever. I'm even following him on Twitter, he's so funny.

Yeah...so contradictory here.

Good I'm glad to hear this news. I actually loved cobras backstory in the first movie a scared soldier who doesn't wanna fight becomes a evil commander. But without duke or baroness this might be kinda weird.

di Bonaventura said not too long ago that they were acting as if another guy took over as Cobra Commander...now we get this???

Oh, well, I was hoping my theory of Rex being a decoy of some sort would be used in some way (that way, it may be able to fix the mess that was in the first movie)...but at least, they're loyal to their own continuity. Let's wait to see who the replacement actor will be, now.

I read somewhere that Cobra Commander is portraied by actor Faran Tahir and voiced by Charlie Adlar.

The first one sucked so bad that i wouldnt even care if the second film wouldnt have nothing to do with it.

I dont know where this is coming from but i heard there is going to be somekind of Destro cameo in the end of the film which sets up the third movie.

ShadowMan@ Thats what i heard too but dont know if its confirmed.

Well that sucks. I had really hoped they were going for something like the original comics, where a Cobra trooper kills Cobra Commander and takes his place.

Yeah, how are they going to get around not having Ripcord? He was the co-star of the first movie. Also, Duke's storyline with Sienna Miller's character is just done now? Her brother is still the bad guy, but she's just gone? There are a lot of hurdles to jump if this movie is going to be halfway decent.

i really hope they use Charles Adler for the voice of cobra that way it'll be like the cartoon where Chris Latta did both Cobra Commander and Starscream. that would be epic for me.
