G.I. JOE 3 Screenwriter Updates His Progress, Talks Channing Tatum's Duke

Evan Daugherty (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Divergent) was recently hired to write the script for the next entry in Paramount's G.I. Joe franchise. Daugherty implies he's drawing from the comics as well as the cartoon.

Evan Daugherty has written scripts for some fairly big, upcoming projects in the wake of his work on Snow White and the Huntsman. In September, Daugherty added G.I. Joe 3 to a list of upcoming blockbusters that already included Divergent and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. So where is Daugherty at in the script writing process on the next Joe film? "I think they gotta keep me sworn to secrecy on this one. I gotta stay quiet because I’m literally in the middle of writing it. When you called, I was writing it," said Evan to Rama's Screen during their phoner. However, he did go on to talk about when he'd be turning in his first draft, "Sometime in the next few months, I would imagine."

When asked about Duke and whether he would have killed off the popular Joe in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Daugherty stated, "Would I have killed off Duke? It’s hard to say, you never know what process that went through to make that film. I don’t know, it’s hard to say, because sometimes killing off a character might make for a dramatic story." In terms of the next installment, he added, "What I’ll say for this new movie, what we’re trying to do- what I”m trying to do [as] a fan of the original cartoon in particular and the comic book as well; the comics are somewhat different than the cartoon. We’re just really trying to make a totally a great G.I. Joe movie which to me is about a lot of action but like a lot of fun with a sort of hint of sci-fi, an exciting world you’ve never been to, etc. I’m excited about what the next G.I. JOE Movie can be.”

I still want a refund from RedBox for having rented GI Joe Retaliation. That is in my top 5 worst movies I've ever seen.

Really, Philvis? With all the movies out there, that one made your Top 5 Worst Ever? Methinks you need to watch more movies... lol... I kid... A little. I thought it was better than the first one...

Yeah while bad it has redeeming qualities... the absail cliff sword fight for one.

There are a lot of infinitely worse movies based on comics, cartoons, toy-lines etc.

CALLED IT...

We never actually saw Dukes body...so he's still alive...the Joes will likely rescue him at the beginning of the next film...

The Other Guys was pretty darn funny. Give it another chance. Maybe it's like Cable Guy -- you have to watch it twice to like it.

GI Joe Retaliation seemed like GI Joe to me. I mean if you watched the old cartoons and then watched that it fit perfectly. It was leaps and bounds better than that awful Rise of Cobra, I know that's not saying much but it was. After 21 Jump Street I actually don't hate Tatum and I won't be surprised if Duke shows up in the next one.

No Duke, no G.I. Joe! Aw, f@ck it. Both of these movies sucked.

They didn't want the movie to suck even more than it did so they were smart enough to kill Duke and get rid of that bitch Channing Tatum.

They a year to improve Retaliation and instead they improved it to 3D so you won't forget how crappy the movie was. I think they should stop and reboot this in a few years. If the studios allowed 2 crappy movies, what's to say the 3rd will be better. I'm sorry, but let me know when 3rd movie was an improvement on the 1st and 2nd? Unless you have a great director in the wings (holding my breath), I will not buy a ticket.

I really didn't like this movie. Rise of Cobra was 100 times better. What they need to do is combine what they did for the first & second movies for the third. Keep it more fantasy with the weapons we never seen. I actually like the suits from the first film. And they have to bring in SEPENTOR!!!

I thought GI Joe Retaliation was alright. I really liked how Cobra Commander looked in the movie. It felt like a cartoon which was fun because it is based on a cartoon.

They need to cameo a lot of Joes like the first one did. Everyone doesn't need star time. Just a face to go with the name. That's all.

The 1st one was more like a cartoon (which is a good thing for the 80s stuff), but just wasn't executed properly.

And Duke is done. Deal with it.

Hahahaha wow what do they expect with a writer like that. Rise of cobra was a fun movie to watch and was a lot more epic in terms of scale. Retaliation was so dull and boring. There were so many characters that were introduced only to have them serve no purpose. John M Chu is definitely not the right person to direct these films. They need to get better writers and directors instead of half assing everything with big effects

Nibs, you aren't a will ferrell fan, I can't say you're alone in that mind set, but I will say while I respect everyones opinions the idea of not liking will ferrell has always been odd to me. He is just crazy enough to make his type of comedy work.

Great will ferrell films

Talladega nights: The Balled of Ricky Bobby

Elf

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

Step Brothers

The other guys

Megamind

The Campaign
