Why Can't They Just Call Him GREEN Arrow?

Why Can't They Just Call Him GREEN Arrow?

The CW’s ARROW is having a great first season. It draws in consistently good ratings, and is now the official fix of everyone like me whose craving some superhero TV. But it is a comic book show, and I feel like it’s producer’s focus on realism is skewing it away from the genre.

I would like to disclaimer this by stating that I do watch Arrow every Wednesday night, so none of the following rants have deterred me enough to quit watching. But that doesn’t mean I’m not getting very annoyed...

Back in October, I remember flicking on the first episode of Arrow. It felt great that there was once again a reliable source of comic book multimedia on each week. I even felt that fuzzy feeling inside when I saw Deathstroke’s mask strewn across a rock on the island. That fuzzy feeling was one that all comic book people share while watching a show like this; the feeling of “Oooh, I know what that means.....”
With it’s season finale drawing nearer and nearer, Arrow has just taken this feeling too far.

I hate how the show’s producers think that it’s so important to add things for us comic book fans, but seeing as it’s a comic book show, this simply should not be. The whole darn thing should be for us! I understand that part of the reason the ratings have been so good is because of it’s appeal to a wider audience, but whose to say that it wouldn’t have better ratings if they simply acknowledged the main character’s REAL name? Why not just call him Green Arrow?

They’re going for a ‘Dark Knight’ feel, I get that, but as I recall...Nolan still called him “Batman”. The whole sentiment of “drop the Green, it’s cooler” is also flawed. He wears a green hood. He shoots green arrows. Green Arrow. He also beats up bad guys, and is a ka-billionaire. I really don’t see how he’s not cool.

The show also tries to compensate for things like this by introducing aspects that are supposed to induce that fuzzy feeling in all of us...
-Te-he! That guy’s last name is Diggle.
-It’s not DINAH Laurel Lance, it’s LAUREL Dinah Lance! And her sister’s in a picture with a canary, great.
-Merlyn! Oh wait...Daddy Merlyn!
-Roy Harper wears a red hoodie!
-Slade Wilson likes swords. A lot.
-STARling City.
-(hot)Brat, drug-using sister is obviously nick-named Speedy.
-Huntress, Deadshot, Vertigo, Etc: Hmmmm....actually, the show has pretty good grounded versions of these characters. No complaints here....yet.

I don’t know why their so afraid to acknowledge the character’s comic book roots. A gigantic chunk of our popular culture is now firmly rooted in comic books. With all the movies destroying the box office, raking in record amounts of money, and warranting sequel after sequel, the logical mind would assume that a fledgling TV show that happens to be based on a comic book would be plastering “From DC Comics” all over the place. The stigma that was once placed on comic books just isn’t as strong as it once was, so let it be known that Arrow comes from this great source of literature that we love!

Everything aside, it really is a good show. I am nit-picking, but one has to admit that all the nod-nod-wink-wink is getting a little old. But who am I kidding? It’s the only superhero comic book show out there(unless of course you count ole Rick and the gang as superheroes...I know I do sometimes), and I know I’m going to sit down this Wednesday and watch it again...

Trust me, you're not nitpicking. It is honestly HARD to watch this damn show.

Me, I have to work EVERY Wednesday night, so I'm not exactly able to watch it. CWTV.com posts episodes up like the day after they air - HOWEVER, my computer and my Xbox's IE will not LOAD the freaking videos. Correction: it'll load all the commercials, but not the episode.

This comes from someone who has an extreme amount of determination and patience, and has sat through the most annoying commercials to watch the most annoying cartoons with his niece.

I literally CANNOT watch this show. The few episodes I had seen were last year, and they suffered from trying too hard to focus on Oliver, rather than Green Arrow. You'd think someone stranded on an island for years would be entitled to some reclusive activities...

In what world is Thea hot? Maybe it's the age difference, but I just don't see it.

My question does it really matter if they call him Green Arrow or not? If they call him GA the story lines are still the same. It dont increase of decrease the shows quality at all. Whenever they do call him GA in the future it will be a build-up to it not just some quick on the fly thing just to call him that. He will earn that moniker.

This thread is a bullshit rant. This is an awesome show. I think its fairly easy for them to make the link and call him green arrow in a credible way. But if they dont i dont care. Its a surprise hit and the number 1 show on its network. I expect more from season 2 but for now enjoy this surprise hit.

This "vigilante" or "the hood" thing don't really bother me that much. However, I do acknowledge that it is kinda weird not calling him "green" considering he's made an effort to create a certain image. His arrows are green, his face paint is green, and his whole costume is green! But I guess it's a way to maintain realism - I mean, no one calls Phoenix Jones "the black fist".

I think that if they should improve on something, it's better storylines and incorporating villains better. The flashbacks are good and don't really need to be changed - they're alot better than the present day to be honest.

What Arrow should do, i think, is to preserve the villains and use them in grand story-arcs that allow development for both Ollie and the villain. Kind of like Dexter. This way, the show won't get repetitive and routine.

Yes it does matter. Oliver himself remarked that the name Green Arrow was "lame" when Daddy Merlyn suggested it over dinner. I just want one of my favorite fictional characters done justly on TV, and it starts with acknowledging his real name. You lose so much when you simply call him "the vigilante" because he is so much more than that. I also hope you're right and one day someone in the city makes the link and adds the 'green' to his name.

@tonytony

Sorry that you feel that way. I am a fan of the show, and I admit that it has some awesome moments. That being said, don't you want something you like to be better? Criticizing
something doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching; it just means that I want it to be better.

If he's the only acknowledged vigilante out there (huntress doens't count) then it's not necessary for him to have a name.

wtf if he shoots the arrow in that picture its not gonna go where hes aiming hes holding the whole string

It's because the arrows are cgi-ed in. They have to make him hold the whole string :P

You have some valid points. I wish they would stop calling him The Hood, as well. Also, I'm not a fan of the episodic feel of the show. The only true story arc is the flashbacks to the island. I'm glad they're taking their time with that. " Villian of the week" approach gets repetitive. It would be great if next season they could build their villians into being truly villianous, not so easily defeated. And Ollie needs to be referred to as Arrow or GA!

So if they called Batman the point eared vigilante in Nolans film no one would have flipped or had any issue with it really. I don't have a problem with it, I'm sure they'll eventually call him Green Arrow and hey its better then the blur.

My issues with the show are being acknowledged the acting's improved a whole lot, Especially Amell the dude was one wooden mother[frick]er but now the dude can act. Despite the whole there being two deathstrokes, thea being annoying, Ollie's mothers motives being all over the place the shows improved.

I don't know about that. There seemed to a tiny stink made over the fact that they never said "Catwoman" once in TDKR. I know it irked me a little, but I think going an entire Batman movie without saying 'Batman' would be pushing it. Its probably not even possible due to him being what... the 4th or 5th most recognizable image on the planet?
GA is different because he isn't nearly as popular as Batman, but he does have a solid fan base.

I'm not sure if you're okay with piracy or streaming. However, if you're looking for any TV show or movie that has been released at least within the last 4 months, then go check this out if you wanna see Arrow.

Or you can always go to the CTV website and watch with a few ads :)

Some ones already mentioned this but he really isn't green arrow yet is he. The dudes main goal is ticking every single name off the list. His motives are all over the place at the moment. The sexy tech chick(I don't remember her name) looks like the one who wants to push him in to the green arrow territory away from his hood persona.

The shows had a solid first season nothing spectacular but we'll see how well it holds up in its second season because thats the season you find out if a show is actually good or not. First seasons are all about working out the mistakes, so if they can't work that out in the second season then well then a shows truly [frick]ed.

Nothing bugs me more than the fact that he gave huntress a domino mask (which isn't the best form of mask) but insists on that face paint. Man it bugs me!

But the flashbacks are great - way better than present day.

Why can't they call him Green Arrow? Why, because if you had a vigilante running around in a large city at night wearing a hood the media and the general public and the police department would most likely call him the Hood. Based on just his appearance alone I do believe that's what everyone would call him unless he left a calling card of some kind. Remember the producers and writers of the show are using the Nolan-verse as a guideline for the television program. They are trying to keep things grounded some what in reality.

I've now seen up to Dodger.

Start with the good:
*Flashbacks are pretty cool. It layers the episodes well, adding an additional depth to what seems perfectly ordinary (in context) by having a corresponding event reflect their stories. It's like a What Would a Survivor Do?

*Action is extremely impressive for a network tv show. Slade's sword-fighting is cool, Oliver's hand-to-hand maneuvers are pretty boss, and I think the shoot-outs are brilliant. There is a lot of death going around for a live-action show airing at 8 every Wednesday, and the bloodshed, while barely present, does not go unaccounted for. Oliver is a killer.

*I enjoy the sort of subtle references to writers and artists. The most obvious one out there is (Andy) Diggle, but you'll sometimes hear one or two random characters (who don't actually appear) named after em, and then in Dodger there's the Neal and Adams shoutout as street names.

--
The bad:

*Acting can be pretty godawful. Sometimes it isn't the actors' faults, and the blame is placed squarely on the dialogue, but some characters just fall flat completely to the point of only existing to appeal to a certain demographic - while being completely annoying to everyone else.

*There is a bit too much importance placed on Oliver's personal life. It's like Stephen Arnell is over-acting intentionally to try to emphasize Oliver's difficulty with fitting back into the role lost to him five years ago. That's me giving the actor the benefit of the doubt, because I do want to like him. I just think the expectations from his peers and family need to be taken down a notch.

*Some bits are way too convenient. Example: the list. Robert Queen carried a list of people who owed him favors? Who does that? Felicity's hacking skills are a little far-fetched, as are, of course, some of Oliver's trick arrows. Not that I don't like the trick arrows, but some are way too silly. It'd make more sense to have arrow functions split, such as the one that not only hacked a bank account, but rendered the account empty. It'd be more impressive if more than one arrow was fired, with each performing a specific function.

Anyway, it is improving, and with my expectations low, I can't say I'm dissatisfied. Hopefully it'll put Ollie on the map towards a feature film.
