Oscar-winner Grant Major explains the inspiration behind the designs for the Green Lantern movie!

Two new pieces of concept art from the Green Lantern live-action movie recently surfaced and now SyFy has tracked down Academy Award-winning production designer Grant Major (Lord of the Rings), to find out where he came up with the ideas that inspired the designs for the main city of Oa and the graveyard of fallen Green Lanterns:

"Oa, of course, is at the center of the Universe, and is also an extremely old place. It's been around since not too long after the Big Bang, I assume. And with its function as a sort of U.N.-cum-military-compound in the middle of space, you'd imagine that with 3,600 different sectors, it must have a lot of influence on a lot of different cultures and time. So what I've tried to do is to introduce a plethora of different types of architectural styles and a feeling that, over the millennia, that it's just been building on and building on [itself], and there's just this huge history of culture that's been there."

"I looked to the comics, of course [for design concepts for Oa]. I also wanted to give it a sort of broader aspect. I really wanted to make it the sort of place where, just from the glimpse that we have of it, that you'd really want to go back there and have a really big look around, and in the interest of the film, maybe give birth to subsequent films."

Green Lantern opens June 17, 2011!

Nobody can deny the major anticipation to this movie. Everything they have done this far is brilliant. I honestly cannot wait for this movie in the summer of 2011. I just want to see the teaser/trailer now.
Emerald green is the right color next summer!!!

@jazzman: Hey, thanks for those links! After seeing the sigs on them I realized that Major didn't actually draw/paint those particular images, he's just the overseeing production designer.

You sure can see them. Good spotting jazz.

I wonder if it's going to resemble Oa from the comics if you look at it from a distance with it's big green stripe?

I agree with protonite, I haven't felt this way since TDK. I'm hoping this franchise gives each earth lantern their own story. I know Hal is the essential, but when I first got into comics Kyle rayner was the green lantern, Hal was dead. So I grew up with Kyle, I hope his story makes it's way to the big screen

thats how you do a comic book movie.
It will be awesome to see on the screen, and is the same production designer of the Lord of the Rings.
Awesome find Brent!

This should really look breathtaking on the big screen! My only concern with this film is that it's being converted to 3D in post. While I really have faith in Martin Campbell, I keep thinking "Clash of the Titans" in terms of 3D. :o
I'm sure they'll do it right though.

@RamoneChamone- I tend to agree, Supes and Bats have always been my top2 with Superman always having been my top #1 hero. I also put Nightwing and Flash up into my top4 heroes- (1st) Superman (2nd) Batman (3rd) Nightwing and (4th) Flash in that order for myself. I may not be a GL fan but even I gotta admit this does look very epic. They are putting the kind of effort into the GL film that I always wanted them to put in for Superman but they never did.
