Green Lantern set to be worst money loser in superhero movie history.

Green Lantern set to be worst money loser in superhero movie history.

Though it's not surprise Warner Bros. Green Lantern is considered the worst superhero movie of 2011, but could it be considered the worst superhero movie ever?

If you go only by money (and why else do they make movies?)
Green Lantern is in a position to be the new standard for what a bad superhero movie is.
If you go by critical acclaim then, these are also some of the worst of the worst.

The top 5 biggest money losses* are :

#5 Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

at negative 1.5 million and a rottentomatoes rating of 10%

#4 Steel

at negative 14 million and a rottentomatoes rating of 12%

#3 Catwoman

at negative 18 million and a rottentomatoes rating of 10%

#2 Punisher: War Zone

negative 25 million and a rottentomatoes rating of 27%

#1 Green Lantern

Negative 53 million and a rottentomatoes rating of 26%

Making it potentially the Biggest Loser in comic book movie history.Four out of five are DC owned characters. What does it say that Warner Brothers either makes gold with its franchises or dung?

And now that Marvel has reclaimed the Punisher. What has it really gotten back but its weakest movie character?

*totals were arrived at by taking production costs and subtracting the gross of a film from it. These were the worst of the films that have a stated production cost. Only superhero movies were considered not all comic book films. Totals were rounded off cause I wanted to.

From a financial standpoint, I agree with this article. I'm the kind of person who likes to consider all things with CBM and Green Lantern is not as bad as people bytch it out to be. DEFINITELY NOT THE BEST MOVIE OF THIS YEAR OR EVER but I can watch it more than once, simply because it leaves an open window for a better sequel and bigger story. For this to be the first shot at GL, I cant believe how harsh some people are and don't look at the bigger picture that GL has the room and potential to expand and be something better. But of course, the voices of hate and name calling will speak louder than anything else.

GL might be the worst CBM when it comes to money lost due to its enormous production cost. But it is no where near being the worst CBM of all time. I'd rather watch this crappy GL movie 5 times before I watch the awful Daredevil movie again just once!

No. It certainly isn't the worst. It is an entertaining movie that made some mistakes. It crammed too much GL history into one film, for example, and it made the cardinal sin of not presenting Hal Jordan the way GL fans perceive Hal. Fans have a hard time seeing him as a light hearted wise guy. Reynolds, while I liked him, was the wrong choice. His default expression is one of self-doubt, something Hal doesn't struggle with.

@NorseGod: No, I haven't actually seen the director's cut nor am I interested. The story was extremely weak, the acting was terrible. There is no amount of included deleted scenes or whatever is included in the director's cut that can make this film significantly better. If I even have to watch Ben Affleck's disgusting a$$ in leather or Jennifer Garner as Elektra again I might just go kill myself. lol. I'm sorry but i just hate every single thing about that movie. It was just absolutely awful.

Ryan Reynolds is quickly becoming serious CBM-poison.

The disappointing Blade Trinity (never saw it myself but from what i read it was the worst of the series)

His role in X-Men Origins as- "Baraka-Pool"

Now most recently...Green Lantern.

@superwolverine- You and me both. i hated the GL movie but it was much more enjoyable and watchable than 'Superman Returns'

@Bodwulf- I don't personally feel Green Lantern belongs on that list with all those other REALLY crappy films. I know you don't make the list but I can't really see how Green Lantern could possibly be placed within the same group as "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace"

;D

@kevberg Batman and Robin MADE 113 million dollars. Reread the article it is about the most money LOST.
It is the actual figures. It is your bias, not mine showing.

@LP4 It may actually make up some ground and be less of a loss than Punisher War Zone but as of right now it has lost more money than any superhero movie ever.

Sorry guys, I like the 13th Warrior but in boxoffice it lost over 100 million dollars. Is it a better watch than other movies sure. But in revenues it sucked hard.

@bodwulf
haha yes i just watched 13th warrior last night!

Hey i dont want to get bombed with hate, but I'm not a huge GL fan, maybe thats why I liked the movie was because I knew hardly anything about him at the time. I am seriously just curious, and anyone can answer this, but what wouldve made this a better movie? I thought the idea of a character who is a hotshot on the onside but afraid on the inside was cool, his suit being a construct made more sense to me then the comics (like raimi's organic web shooters), and the effects were pretty cool. Why do most people despise this movie? And I'm not looking to get in an argument here I just wanna understand.

@ ngachacha also did not add 100 million in promotional costs GL lost because those figures are even less available than production costs. And I
I did not jump the gun.It is in a position to be the biggest flop. Will it pull in 50 million from the foreign boxoffice to dig out of this hole? Time will tell.
Indestruktible
Indestruktible - 7/27/2011, 9:12 PM
@ Bodwulf

There are at least 25 more markets to open. If it does 2 mil each, it will make it back. That's highly doable.

Each movie has promotional costs, so if you're going to add GL promotional costs, then you mine as well add the others too. Since you did not, it's not a point then so it's irrelevant to bring it up.

Bodwulf - 7/27/2011, 9:13 PM
@kevberg LOL . Green Lantern might just make 100 million overseas and actually make 1 dollar proffit.Overseas sales actually only send about half the profits back to the studio.
I hope so and plus with DVD sales they may just end up in the black.
You are way more into this than I am. I just saw where it was and was shocked it had lost so much.
Do what you will with the article as long as you enjoyed it.

SwingsetKnight
SwingsetKnight - 7/27/2011, 9:35 PM
Nah. Daredevil wasn't that bad. Neither was Superman Returns. They were both mediocre, lackluster flicks that through years of escalating fanboy disappointment and entrenching opinions have somehow transformed into the "WORST MOVIES EVER".

Now Catwoman was a shitstorm. It had every element CBM fans profess to loathe. It was atrociously written, ridiculous, poorly acted, and had such incredibly low respect for the source material that it practically wiped itself with a Catwoman comic book. Unlike the other two, it was actually panned by critics and audiences AT THE TIME IT CAME OUT. Yes, UNLIKE the other two, which were regarded as just what they were: serviceable but uninspired.
Bodwulf
Bodwulf - 7/27/2011, 9:40 PM
O.K. one last post and I am done. the article stands true. It only states that Green Lantern "is in a position to be the new standard for what a bad superhero movie is." or asks in the form of a question is it the worst. I never state if it is good or bad.I in fact say it has at this time has the most money lost.

The rottentomatoes ratings merely show these are not well recieved criticly and give insite as to why they may be on here. The money is how they got their position.

If you read the article without pushing your emotional reactions on it, it is very clear. I am not bashing Green Lantern. I never once give my opinion on the movie I just state where it is at this time.

If Batman and Robin had lost money It would be on the list. It has a RT rating of 13% but that is not what thearticle is about. (if you read it.)

plus if i had not written it what would Kevberg wipe his ass with?
