Who is GUY GARDNER?
GUY GARDNER is a Green Lantern and a Warrior. Effective and powerful as well as obnoxious and arrogant. The second earthman to wield an Oan Emerald power ring but thinks of himself as the greatest Green Lantern of all time.
GUY GARDNER is a core member of the Green Lantern corps, and for a time a significant member of the Justice League. He was created by John Broome and Gil Kane and first appeared in Green Lantern #59 (March 1968). GUY GARDNER presently is a jingoistic parody of an ultra-macho "red-blooded American male", this characterization started back in the 1980s.
What are his powers and abilities?
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.
Being partially "Vuldarian", Guy was able to alter his body to form blades and other weapons.
Green Lantern Ring Mastery:
First what is a Green Lantern Ring, it is considered to be one of the most powerful weapons in the known universe, has the ability to affect and use fundamental forces of the known universe, including electromagnetic energies such as gravity, radiation, heat, light, and powerful blasts of concussive force. The ring can form constructs of Oan energy. The primary function of the Power Ring is to provide a weapon capable of transforming the wearer's thoughts into physical constructs through the wearer's strength of willpower.
Guy's constructs are amongst the most powerful. Guy is so eager to ringsling, and possesses so much raw will power, his ring is often sparking like a leaky water faucet about to explode.
What are the changes in look he underwent?
1. First costume
Green Lantern #59 (March 1968)
In his first appearance GUY GARDNER's costume was a standard Green Lantern costume similar to what Hal Jordan was wearing at that time. This costume lasted until 1985.
2. Sleeveless vest
Green Lantern #196 (January 1986)
This was the time after the Crisis on Infinite Earth that GUY GARDNER began using a collared sleeveless vest as his Green Lantern uniform. He wore this until his stint with the Justice League in the early 90s.
3. Yellow Ring
GUY GARDNER Vol 1 #1 (October, 1992)
In his very first series, Guy is now sporting a complete leather jacket and instead of the Green Lantern logo he has a specialized "G" as an insignia. He has quitted the Green Lantern corps after losing a fight with Hal Jordan. He now wears a yellow ring which he got from the crypt of Sinestro. This costume lasted until '96.
4. Warrior
GUY GARDNER Vol 1 #17 (February, 1994)
This look lasted for about one issue, due to the event of Emerald Twilight Guy's ring experienced a massive power surge and burnt out, leaving him without a method of recharging it. Without the use of the ring he decided that he needs a new look and a new name, enter the Warrior. This particular look was revisited in Green Lantern Rebirth #1 sans the jacket.
5. Warrior Booster
GUY GARDNER Vol 1 #18 (March, 1994)
GUY GARDNER without the power of his ring asked Blue Beetle for help. He was given one of Booster Gold's prototype exo-skeletons based on Kilowog's design for the Rocket Red Armor.
6. Indiana Gardner
GUY GARDNER Vol 1 #22 (July, 1994)
The armored suit got destroyed fighting a deranged Hal Jordan, and Gardner lose an eye as well. After that event Guy immediately went in the quest looking for power he went on an expedition in the Amazon in the quest of the chalice of the Warrior Water. (Guy Indiana Jones and Nick Fury is on the phone, the other is asking for his story back and the other one just needs the eye patch that you stole.)
7. Vuldarian Warrior
GUY GARDNER Vol 1 #25 (November, 1994)
Succeeding in finding the chalice of the Warrior Water, he drank from it. Drinking the water activated the alien DNA that was implanted in his bloodline a millennium ago by a space-traveling race called the Vuldarians (again this make comics gold). He discovered new powers that would allow him to resume his role as a superhero, and he retained his name Warrior. He had this look until '96
8. Gal Gardner
GUY GARDNER Vol 1 #42 (May, 1996)
GUY GARDNER solo series is nearing its end but before it finishes we have this one memorable transformation where we see our Guy not so much like a guy. This was only in one issue and the villain of the piece, Dementor, was the one who transformed Gardner to his/her present predicament.
9. Back in the Corps
Green Lantern: Rebirth #1 (July 2005)
In this miniseries Guy's Vuldarian DNA is strangely overwritten by his human DNA when Parallax possesses Gardner and several Green Lanterns. When Parallax was defeated we see Gardner back in the Green Lantern Corps as one of its senior officers. He is back wearing his sleeveless jacket up to this date.
10. Corpse Division
Green Lantern Corps Vol 2 #7 (February, 2007)
For a brief moment Guy was sent to work with The Corpse, the top secret no ethical standard Black Ops division of the Green Lanterns Corps but has no official ties to the Corps. Guy was denied membership because he had difficulty reconciling himself to murdering a criminal. Guy operating in this mission did not use Power Rings; instead, he swallowed special coin-like disks that give him all of the powers of the standard ring for a limited time. These disks produce purple energy instead of the traditional green. He wore a black uniform with no symbols.
11. Rage Lantern
Green Lantern Corps: Blackest Night #43 (February 2010)
Grief stricken by the death of a fellow Green Lantern, he was driven to incredible rage was sought out by a red power ring, which transforms him into the Red Lantern of sector 2814. Now GUY GARDNER is powered by both green and red power rings. This transformation did not last long as he is later returned to normal by the Green Lantern Planet - Mogo (To those DC noobs you heard me right there is a Green Lantern that is a Planet).
GUY GARDNER in Live Media
1. Matthew Settle
GUY GARDNER has only been portrayed once in live-action TV. In 1997, Matthew Settle played him in a Keith Giffen-inspired pilot for a proposed TV series Justice League of America. This version of the character is a combination of Earth's various Lanterns. His uniform is based on the "sleeveless vest" comics version of GUY GARDNER, though he wears a mask and insignia that resemble those of Kyle Rayner's first costume. Further, his appearance and personality more accurately mirror those of Hal Jordan. (They left out John Stewart's traits is that discrimination or something?)
You could see Guy in the video below along with the other Justice League characters:

[@LEEE777 enjoyed researching this one.]
This is the 16th article in my Know Your CBM Character series. Any requests and suggestions for an article for this series write it down in the comment section BELOW.
Message to the CBM community:To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). Characters in Manga or Anime’, I am not particularly familiar of, I am not discounting these characters but it will probably take some time before I write a feature on them because I have to read up on these characters. Thank you for reading these articles! If there are errors on the feature article above, blame it on my age, humanity and ignorance. Just be sure to check the comment section for the corrections, any error I made will surely be pointed out and corrected by much bigger geeks (because there will always be a bigger geek out there). -This has been PollMaster inviting you to the geekside. MABUHAY CBM and Godspeed!
