Peter Travers calls Green Lantern "Comic Book Movie Hell"

Latest review from Rolling Stone's Peter Travers does not have good things to say about tomorrows CBM, Green Lantern

This was a harsh review. From what I have read over the last couple of days, Green Lantern being a terrible movie, is not an uncommon opinion. I am afraid this movie seems like a bomb, with an incredibly low rotten tomatoes score of 26% (last time I checked). I am not willing to waste my money on this movie, wait for redbox on this one.

Oh GL.....you had soo much potential. Now *unless you make a shit load of money* we will never get to see Sinestro go evil, star sapphire, blackest night, atrotious, the other lantern corps on the big screen. That makes me sad :(

Movies critics are stupid. They always finish writing their reviews in the first 15 minutes of the movie. This is why I don't trust movie critics. I know people who have seen movie critics work.

This guy is kind of an idiot. I believe the movie isn't as good as we all thought it would be, but he is seriously messed up. Watch his other reviews, he mostly just rambles.Hopefully GL will still make enough money so we can get a sequel.

@N I get it man, but so many professional and self-proclaimed critics are bashing this thing...

it's not that I am spineless but I can't justify spending money on a movie that is potentially as lame as everyone is saying, when there are other things I want to see this summer, such as the increasingly awesome looking captain america.

Money does not grow on trees man and college certainly is taking most all of mine.

This guy sounds like a complete idiot. Am I supposed to take this guy's critique seriously?? Out of everything I've seen in the trailers, this movie looks like it will be epic! And my predictions are seldom to never wrong. (The special effects do not sway my belief in this film.)

The really good movies are in the Fall?? Really?!? Really? I can't remember a good movie that came out in the Fall in recent years. That just showed me that this guy just doesn't have much taste for a big action film. Which is probably why this film is getting bashed by critics since they are all mainly middle-aged to older people who would rather watch a film of people just talking about issues (political or something in the family) for two and a half hours than to watch a film that is action packed about someone trying to save the world.

Ryan Reynolds - "a test pilot that was taken out of nowhere" - did he miss the part where they clearly state the reason for him being chosen is for his great courage and his ability to overcome fear?!? WTF?!? Dumba$$!! -_-

I never had faith in Blake Lively so he's probably right on the money with that one.

As for the clunky writing, there's really only 2 villains, how clunky can it actually be. I'm sure it's probably just a fast-paced film to keep the audience engaged. But again, we'll see.

And what about Sinestro? No word on him? Was his performance just so good that he didn't want to say too many good things about this film?

Other than his statement of Blake Liviely's terrible performance and Saarsgaard's 'great' performance', I would have to say that I don't count on this guy giving me a correct review.

It looks good and I'm going to watch it myself and then decide if it was worth it. I'm gonna help DC/WB because I want to see a JL film down the line. I'm pretty sure this movie will be great. All the old critics can go take Viagra and go frick themselves.

Uh, hate hearing so many bad reviews.
But one thing people must remember is that when we hear that Empire or Rolling Stone or whoever think it's good/bad, it's just one persons opinion.
20 bad reviews equals 20 peoples opinions.

Still though, I don't imagine it'll be that great of a film from the reception so far coupled with dodgy trailers and my personal issues with the film.

I'm a film fan first and foremost so I don't give them extra credit because they have characters I like.
But I'll still be seeing it this weekend, hoping for the best.

Also, people gotta chill out. Freaking out cuz someone dislikes something?
I like coke over pepsi but I don't call pepsi drinkers retards and fools.
It's called personal taste.

while I don't always agree with alot of critics (Roger Ebert in particular) I do consider (in most cases) what the critics say as at least a good basis for the film. yes, their are some I thought they were wrong about (Unbreakable, Equilibrium, Armageddon, Body of Lies) but if most if not all the critics say the movie sucks (like Old Dogs with 5%) then I'm usually hesitant to spend the time and/or money to see it.

now don't get me wrong, I would LOVE a good Green Lantern movie. over the past year or so, I've really gotten more into the character and appreciate the depth the character of Hal Jordan brings to the DCU. but this movie will fail. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are both bad choices for the roles, Hector Hammond is a kinda lame villain and I don't like the costume change for the Lanterns. I like the diversity of the ones from the comics (I especially like Kyle Rayner's). ll that being said, I do hope their will be a sequel IF WB learns from the mistakes of this one and can improve on it (replace Hal Jordan as the main Lantern with Jon Stewart[Idris Elba] or Kyle Rayner[Karl Urban]). but I'm gonna wait for the discount theater for this one.

I'm still going to see this tomorrow night, but I'm worried now. This guy loved First Class, Iron Man, and Thor, so he's not the type to hate a movie because it's a comic book movie. I hope he's wrong.

This guy is a huge douche, but I find his offensiveness entertaining.

Before You write him off as a CBM hater he liked thor and Xmen and I agree with his analysis of both.

This movie could be great, but unless I hear some great stuff about it over the weekend I won't be seeing it in theaters.

Rolling Stone magazine is a liberal douche magazine seems to me liberal Hollywood reviewers cant stand this movie (another review people keep quoting on this site is the VillageVoice another Lib rag)because it has a cocky superhero who never learns humility. They always love superhero movies where the hero is flawed or is an allegory for how homosexuals are persecuted. I am not saying I think the movie is perfect but all I keep reading is they think he is a too good looking cocky hero who does not show emotion and they don't like it, well guess what real men don't cry every 5 minutes like Peter Parker in Spider-Man 1,2,and 3. All the bad stuff they keep saying is exactly how Hal Jordan is portrayed in the comics. If you have read the comic and don't like it or old school cocky non emo non flawed heroes or can't understand the concept of the ring or an intergalactic police force then you will not like this movie.

Also it seems a lot of these reviewers were wanting to bash this movie as soon as it was announced how much WB spent on it. Like these reviewers find it obscene that the studio spent $300 million on it and that amount of money should only be spent on an environmentally conscious movie like Avatar or it has to deal with some sort of social issues.

I never got much into Green Lantern comics as a kid, and frankly did not know too much about them or the lore...I really was into Superman and Batman....and even I'M EXCITED to see this movie! I love the constructs, and the green lantern suit, and the characters so far from the trailers. I even bought 3D tickets in the premier section of my theatre. Either the rolling stone guy who reviewed this is still riding high on the stellar reviews from last week's Super 8 and is still looking for some Spielberg-ish-ness in Green Lantern, or (and I hate to use this language) he's just an a**hole. I've no doubt the movie will be fun and entertaining just like all the other comic book movies I've been enjoying these past few years. I seriously think that all the critics are probably realizing they gave Super 8 too good of a review last week and thinking they need to trash the next summer blockbuster to save face.

MINOR SPOILERS:

I just returned from seeing Green Lantern and thought I would post my review. I review movies , TV, comics and games on a weekly radio show, so I see a lot. Green Lantern was not the best movie I have seen, but it was by far not the "movie from hell" some of these idiots who call themselves reviewers are saying.

As a lifelong fan, I have some bias towards GL. As an origins movie, this will work for the audience who have no idea of the source material. I was saddened that the Oa portions were rushed, and we didn't see our favorite Lanterns. What you see of them in the trailer group scenes are pretty much what we have in the film. and sorry friends, no Mogo.

Mark Strong hits it off perfectly as Sinestro. Geoffrey Rush is great as Tomar Re. And for fans who are in a panic over Blake Lively, I think she did fantastic and was great eye candy. Ryan Reynold was decent as Hal, but I am a fan boy who still wishes they went with Nathan Fillion.

Now the detractors for me were the earth scenes. They went long and I could have done without Hector Hammond completely. I also am disappointed with the helicopter rescue scene. When Hal first appears as GL and saves the helicopter, there is almost zero reaction from the crowd. WTF? you have a glowing green man floating in front of you and there is no cheers? No signs of awe? No "who is that flying green man who just saved us?" In the original Superman, there was great crowd reactions for the helicopter rescue, nothing here. I also hated, HATED Parallax here in this movie.

Despite the errors of the film, I am glad we finally see my favorite hero on the big screen. I give this 7.5 Power batteries out of 10.

You can find my weekly live, call-in show every Sunday at 9pm central time at http://bit.ly/TMO2010 with the movie and the new animated GL film as topics this week.

This dude's an idiot. The movie was great. As with all CBM's you establish characters, relationships, origins etc....the effects were what they were supposed to be, other worldly and pure energy, not colorful tights and leather...boring...and trust me, Sinestro WILL battle Hal...nuff said...

I'm pretty sure this guy didn't see the movie, he just jumped on the hate bandwagon GL has against it right now... Saw the movie tonight, theater was full, and all seemed to really enjoy it. I loved it, it met my expectations, and leaves me wanting more in a sequel. I'm sure, as he said, Peter Travers will be glad when the fall comes and he'll get his fill of artsy fartsy oscar movies, but for now.... just be quiet.
