BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Tracking To Open With $60+ Million

Marvel have been going all out promoting Guardians of the Galaxy recently, and it looks set to pay off for them now as early tracking for the James Gunn helmed movie indicates that it will open with upwards of $60 million, though some say it could hit as much as $80 million...

All of Marvel's movies have been a risk to some degree, but Guardians of the Galaxy is arguably their riskiest venture yet (well, until Ant-Man). It opens in North America on August 1st, but pre-release tracking indicates that Kevin Feige's latest gamble will very much pay off. Data which came in today (via The Wrap)  projects a three day total of $60 million, a great start for a movie featuring such an obscure group of characters who even the geekiest of comic book fans aren't even that familiar with. However, as you can see below, some believe that Guardians of the Galaxy will do even better than that! Its only competition is James Brown biopic Get On Up, starring Chadwick Boseman, and with a production budget of $170 million, we should probably start getting ready for Guardians of the Galaxy 2. How much do you guys think the movie will earn next month?

Well...I called my boss. It turns out we were all off today. I need to start reading these memos they send to me. Oh well, I caught up on some stuff. I just ordered a sandwich and will watch some ESPN. Might even pour myself a drink.

I'm more interested in the quality of the film being at a high level, but I also want to see a big box office number, thus ensuring a GOTG sequel and continued movies about the cosmic side of the MCU. Also, as others have mentioned on here, this movie becoming an all-around success can only be seen as encouraging from the perspective of other studios, such as Warner Bros., who has been rumored to have plans for a Flash / Green Lantern team-up film.

@WinterSolider33 -- I feel that way about every Marvel film just before I watch it, but, I agree, I feel even more strongly about this one. It's amazing that two years ago, when the project was announced, I had no knowledge of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and now I've read just about the entire Abnett / Lanning series. The characters seem as familiar to me at this point as The Avengers.

Total will probably end up around $500m.

Super excited for the next chapter of Phase II, I can't believe it's already over.

Thor and Cap did about 300 mil or so. If it hits that mark it will be a success. Although, if it can reach 500 mil that would be blockbuster territory for this film.

I'm hoping it'll earn that sweet sweet $80 million opening, although I do expect it to at least have a $60 million opening as a minimum. Though $75 million would be ideal, and $80 million is the dream team spot!
