Marvel's confidence in Guardians of the Galaxy became clear when they announced that a sequel will follow in 2017, and the latest box office tracking data indicates that they have every right to feel that way! Disney are now projecting an opening of around $65 million, but other analysts believe that the James Gunn movie will reach upwards of $70 million or more. It doesn't have much in the way of competition, and The Avengers effect should still be felt says Dave Hollis, Walt Disney Studios’ executive vice president of theatrical distribution. "There has been a steadiness and momentum with the brand overall that just crescendoed with ‘The Avengers’ and the impact of that film continues to bleed into other films." Guardians of the Galaxy is set to have the widest August opening ever, debuting in 4,080 theaters, nearly 3,200 of which are in 3D. It's also set to reach over 40 international territories this weekend, including the UK, Russia, Brazil and Mexico. Fandango meanwhile are reporting that the movie is set to become the biggest August pre-seller in their history, and is shaping up to be the hottest selling non-sequel of the year, topping The LEGO Movie. Of those surveyed, 95% are attracted to the film's humour (so don't expect to see that leave the Marvel movies anytime soon), while 85% are excited to see Chris Pratt in a starring role and 80% are interested in seeing additional movies in the franchise.
