Is GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY A Perfect Movie? "It's Better Than Eleven Percent"

Expanded from a comment I made, I question whether GOTG is the best Marvel movie yet. Hit the jump for this quasi-review...oh and (SPOILERS!!!)

Editorial Opinion

Here I give you some of the problems I had with the recent Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy. Keep in mind, I enjoyed this movie and think it's really good, I just don;t think it's 'great' or 'the best Marvel movie yet' as some fans have been toting. Here's why...

1. Lazy Aliens

Splashing some yellow paint on an extra isn't making them some alien being galaxies way from Earth. It seemed as if you weren't the main characters then you didn't have much detail put into your look. The strangest non-main character was Nathan Fillion's alien that he voiced (the big blue aliens that got his nose picked by Groot).
Hell I never even considered seeing Stan Lee on another planet besides Earth when this movie was coming out. The weirdest thing we actually saw from this movie that we hadn't already saw was a dog and a duck. Even Cosmo didn't get his powers in the movie. He was just a dog! I was disappointed in this movie because this was Marvel's shot to throw so much weirdness at the general audience and they didn't really deliver. This movie is what will set the tone for how much strange stuff you can put into future Marvel movies. I would've liked very much to see some weird out-there anime type shit in here.

2. Underdeveloped Characters

Aside from Groot and Rocket not many of the characters got much development. No, I did not want five origin stories. That would've been nice, but I never expected it. But according to this film, Gamora was never a murderer or threat of any kind (she's basically a green Uhura ((both played by Zoe)) that happens to be a fighter too) and Drax can destroy Thanos but can't take on Ronan one-on-one. Ronan could've been something special. He had decent development for a villain and I was a fan of him right until he got killed off. Ronan could've been their next big villain since Loki but they ruined that chance. I hope they bring him back in GOTG2 because he was done very well. I did not care for Star-Lord's mother since the movie didn't up-play their relationship (it starts with her death). Nebula was pretty much just 'there' even though she did have some good scenes. I think she'll be the 'big bad' in GOTG2. Rocket was done well as they show he cares for Groot even though he insults him repeatedly. Groot is definitely shown as a  lovable idiot and you can really feel something during the heartfelt "We Are Groot" moment.

3. Plot Felt Rushed (At Times)
To me, it kind of felt like James Gunn was like "Let's hurry up and get them together for the sake of the plot" while making this movie. Putting aside the fact I'm a comic book fan, when the Guardians finally get together as a team (as a moviegoer) I'm supposed to feel like

But when it finally happened (due to it being rushed) it kind of felt like

It's really due to the movie not putting emphasis on the fact that the Guardians are a team of misfits. They are completely different people with completely different views that don't get along except when it actually matters. The film had them being speaking buddies on a first-name basis within ten minutes of them meeting each other.

Final Thoughts:
Overall thought I really enjoyed this film I just don't see it as the golden goose of CBM's like some users do. Four out of five stars.

The villain was absolutely terrible. Marvel villains have always been lackluster with the exception of Loki. They under utilized yet another great actor however I thought everything else was fine although some of the jokes didn't hit as well as I think they intended them to. Rocket was definitely one of the best parts about the movie.

7/10 from me, I agree with your points.

GotG lacked action, I was expecting alot more of action. It was more a comedy to me than action, adventure movie. and i also agree with ronan being killed off, hes a character that could easily be used again.

I agree with your first point.
I would've liked to see more Ronan and the whole Kree-empire in this film.

"But according to this film, Gamora was never a murderer or threat of any kind (she's basically a green Uhura ((both played by Zoe)) that happens to be a fighter too) and Drax can destroy Thanos but can't take on Ronan one-on-one."
i belive they said gamora was an assasin but she didnt want to be a murderer like nebula she did what she did because of thanos. and it is never said in the film that drax can destroy thanos.

in this film i think drax is just an alien not arthur douglas in an alien body. i posted this earlier "also i just got a though in the comics we know drax got his powers thanks to thanos's dad and grandfather the mentor and chronos. in the film drax to me seemed like he was just an alien so would it perhaps be possible to see the mentor and chronos give drax the power to kill thanos in a sequel." i personally hope this happens.

Very Good Points!

I liked the film, but the way people are praising and talking about it, is way overboard. It is a solid movie but it had a few problems and while I am glad I saw it, afterwards I had no desire to see it again. It is great that it did so well opening weekend and I applaud Disney for being bold in bringing characters to the silver screen that are obscure but I don't see this movie having a lot of legs after the fanboy excitement dies down. Further more connecting it to the Avengers will ruin the Avengers brand.

i do agree with you on ronan, and thhy might introduce new more alien looking aliens in the sequel, odds are they will have a larger budget so hopefully they can spend a bit more on thanos and other unique aliens.

So... let me see if I follow your logic. You didn't like pretty much anything about the film, but you gave it 4 out of 5 stars?

You do realize that you...Pretty much just completely invalidated your own review right?

Here's the thing. If you really feel the movie has that many flaws - adjust your rating. Or if you genuinely enjoyed the film, go back and decide if most of your comments are just nitpicking to fill space in a column and get people to read it because you had the audacity to buck common views.

Which one is it? Stand by your review or stand by your rating. Do not try to have your cake and smear it on the wall like a hipster and call it "Art".

@rjakobson I said at the beginning that I liked this movie I just didn't love it. This isn't a full review it just pinpoints the faults of the movie. Overall, the film had way more pluses than minuses.

I thought the movie was Awesome, well written, well executed, loved it, it also will open up a whole new cosmic dimension of the Marvel Universe, so many characters that can come into play now

It's Star Trek lite. However the action in that series(Abrams Reboot) is actually creative. The action in this film was bland, hollow and the same stuff we've seen in previous Marvel movies, especially in the third act, which was just a rehash of The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World and The Winter Soldier third acts. There wasn't one memorable action or fight scene, it's either stuff just moving around and exploding ala Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3 or your standard fight scene that you've seen a million times before. Ronan was simply Malekith 2.0 and another poor and forgettable villain. The plot wasn't engaging or memorable, due to it being a bland retread and the lack of any sort of tension.

The Aliens in this film were rubbish. They were either people painted in a different colour or somebody who had been given a cybernetic prosthetic/implant. There was zero uniqueness or oddness. It's just humans with different colours. This is exact same problem I have with Star Trek, where the "Aliens" just look like humans with mutations or defects and are hardly "alien" at all.

The film was presented well and had good visuals, however it was painfully mediocre and very boring.

Never noticed the "Lazy Aliens" thing, or maybe it didn't bother me, but I think its a good point, nonetheless.

Underdeveloped Characters too, which is so weird because everyone is saying the characters were developed perfectly. Really? I felt no connection with any of them, including Peter Quill, who gets a tragic backstory, but then we totally forget about it because he's such a clown for the rest of the film. Only at the end with the gift, is it like, "Oh yea. That."

Plot. They did buddy up pretty quick, didn't they? It took the Avengers the ENTIRE MOVIE to finally trust each other, making the teamwork feel much more earned. But the part of the plot I want to discuss is the purple orb, which is just another important/dangerous macguffin that everyone wants to get their hands on. Thor 2 suffered from this as well, including the weak villain. These effing Infinity Stones, man... just round em all up and get on with it, Thanos! They make for terrible stories.

Basically I agree with all CookieKid's points, but that rating needs adjusting. You can't call all these things out and still say the movie is 4 stars. This reads like 3.5 Stars or 7/10, which is still fair.

@Ocelot:
Weak villain + Forgettable action + Disposable Plot < Funny = Best Marvel Movie Ever

amIright?

@Forthas:
Basically agree with every word you said. Fun time, glad I saw it, but no desire to see it again. And after the laughs get old, what does the movie really offer?

Your points are just except for Gamora. Gamora didn't want to be what she was forced to anymore. This was her way out. She was bad ass and had a small arc. The next film will explore more of her. I'm sure there were more scenes but the film was a good version of wanting to keep the pace moving. I could have sat for another 20 mins. But I understand the decisions made. The film didn't suffer from the quick pace of the plot. The story is simple marvel story. Get this object, keep object away from bad guys, lose object, get it back, save the day. Just like the other films it's about the tone and genre they choose to play with that makes the movies.

GOTG was great. All of the nitpicking I keep hearing is stuff that would have made it a 12-hour movie. That's what the sequel is for.

@TheOverlord
I don't see how I'm nitpicking when they said this movie was going to be "Star Wars for a new generation". The movie set its own expectations too high it's not my fault they didn't meet them.

Even though I loved the movie, the first thing I noticed while watching it was how much they told instead of showed. I know there was a lot of of information to get out and little time but the clunky exposition was pretty bad and stood out to me.

I loved this film. I loved all of the portrayals of the Guardians and I feel like they were all developed enough, but outside of Nebula, the villains sucked ass. I think Nebula even had moments where it was like "....bish whet...?", but she and some great moments too. The Guardians carried this film TBH. The Collector also was very well portrayed, but that's it.

I thought Drax and Gamore were underpowered in the movie:One got hit hard by the Worf Effect against Ronan, the other got subdued by a bunch of thugs. ''What a deadliest woman in the galaxy you turned out to be.''(a quote from Pip the Troll).
