SDCC '13: James Gunn Talks Thanos; Says Rocket Raccoon And Groot Casting Coming "Next Week"

Well, "next week-ish" that is! According to Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, casting news for both team members is on the way, while it appears Marvel are planning on retconning the after-credits scene of The Avengers by making Thanos a foe for the Guardians. Check it out!

Following the unveiling of the first footage from Guardians of the Galaxy at Marvel's San Diego Comic-Con panel, James Gunn later told reporters at a press conference that casting news for both Rocket Raccoon and Groot is coming...very soon! "Tomorrow, next week-ish," the director promised after checking with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. When The Incredible Hulk was released in 2008, the plan was for The Avengers to face him in their own team-up movie in 2011. Of course, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe expanded and Joss Whedon came on board, that all changed. That was why the studio would then use a one-shot short movie to explain away Tony Stark's meeting with General Ross in the post-credits scene of that movie! It now appears as if they're doing the same for the one from The Avengers as Thanos becomes a threat to the Guardians of the Galaxy instead of to Earth in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. "We have Thanos," Gunn said. "Thanos is the thing connecting us to the rest of the Marvel Universe at this point and in the future we'll see what happens after this, but for right now, we're connected to the rest of the Marvel Universe because we're resetting the end of The Avengers." Even so, I'm betting that we'll see Earth's Mightiest Heroes battling it out with the Mad Titan in the third instalment of that franchise! You can watch the press conference in full below.

I didn't think I'd be that excited for GOTG.... It seems I was wrong, it's now sitting at No. 1 for my most anticipated movie of next year

Ok so first of all, first time user, long time fan of CBM so i'm glad I can voice my opinion :) It kinda sucks that they're gonna retcon Thanos since the reveal at the end of Avengers was one for the ages. Hopefully he'll go toe to toe with the Avengers and whatever other Marvel hero gets picked up along the way, cuz let's face it, there's no way they can go up against him with the current roster.

when the incredible hulk was released, the plan was for the avengers to face HIM in their own team-up movie in 2011.

so, who is the HIM? the first idea is avengers vs gotg?

@AgentCoulson
I'm pretty sure they meant the Avengers were gonna face the hulk just like in the comics when they first got together.

HIM = The Hulk

The Incredible Hulk after credit sequence was meant to set up an Avengers movie in which the team formed to take down the Hulk. When Joss Whedon came on board he scraped the original avengers script and started from scratch.

@AgentCoulson as others have already mentioned, the "HIM" that he was referring to was the Hulk. It was the draft that was turned in by notorious hack writer Zak Penn. After Whedon came on board, being the superior writer and creator of universes that he is, he scrapped many of Penn's ideas and really wrote the movie from scratch.

As far as the after credits of Avengers being "retconned" I wouldn't be so sure. For me it makes perfect sense. The MCU's first phase had to do with technology, the second Cosmic, while the third will be Mystic. Thanos is a character that embodies all three. His girlfriend is Death and one of his great allies is Mephisto, so it makes sense that Marvel would try to set up the Mystic Phase with a Doctor Strange movie before introducing Thanos as a full fledged big bad.

And that was shocking to me anyways seeing how Marvel would be shooting their load so soon by making Thanos the main threat in Avengers 2. Hence, this makes me feel a lot better about the future of the MCU as they are not writing themselves into the proverbial corner so to speak.

i'm betting on seeing thanos in guardians of the galaxy,it will be briefly but more than what we saw in the avengers.

i believe we'll see thanos in the avengers 3(maybe the masters of evil) or if guardians proves popular enough & rakes in the money they might keep thanos for the cosmic side of the marvel cinematic universe.

but one thing is for sure whatever they decide to with the mad titan he better get some movie love.

thx for the explanation guys :D
yeah i agree what Penn wrote sucks

well, i do agree with some reports a while ago that Thanos will be use sparingly, because Marvel have the plan to make him the big bad villain
somehow im worried that MCU will be too big for some people to digest, especially when the phase 3 is on.
i hope they can continue this very good work, and if things didnt work out, they know when and how to stop

The voices of Grood and Rocket Raccoon...the guy to play Thanos..the actor to play the new (and hopefully, improved) BATMAN..the confirmation of Aaron 'kickass' johnson as marvel's quicksilver..and the (HOT) chick to play his on-screen sister, Scarlet Witch...

oh, all the burning questions...can't wait for em to be answered.

During the Guardians part of the Marvel panel Djimon Hounsou said his character works for The Collector and Thanos, which probably means Thanos has at least a minor (hopefully major) role in the movie.

Resetting he said..what the hell does that mean?
That they had one idea & now it's changed? Just like that?
Sorry but zthanos is a greater threat & better villain that tin-can Ultron.

I never took the Thanos appearance in the mid-credits scene that he was guaranteed in the second movie. I took it to mean that earth was now on his radar, that it could be a threat to his future plans. Josh even hinted that he was saving him for later.

I think of Thanos like the Emperor. In Star Wars Episode IV the emperor is briefly mentioned. In Empire we see him have a brief conversation with Vader. In Return of the Jedi we see full Emperor with sparkly fingers. Now the Marvel movies aren't as interconnected as Star Wars. Star Wars was one long story split between three movies. The Marvel movies are separate stories that take place in the same universe. But I think the principle is the same. They'll be taking time to build up to Thanos in Phase III.

I love how they're really starting to link every piece together with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Can't wait to see Thanos! Maybe not much, I suspect, but still... Having Ultron and Thanos as villains within the space of two movies... that's pretty fantastic!
Also, really hope they've considered David Tennant for Rocket Raccoon! He'd be a very good choice.

They better keep Thanos. They have no idea what a great idea that was. So many of the people in the theatre with me were not comic book fans but were still blown away by the film. At the end I could hear everyone asking "who was that guy ?" My facebook was lighting up with marvel noobs who wanted to know who Thanos was. A lot of these people are now read up on Thanos, and are even comic book readers after being forced to read up on Thanos in anticipation for his next appearance in the MCU

Nick Offerman for Rocket Raccoon make it happen! Also I'm more than down for Thanos to be the big bad in Avengers 3. Now I still hope his influence is there even though Ultron is the main villain for Avengers 2.
