GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Star Dave Bautista Seemingly Bids Farewell To Drax After Wrapping Shooting

James Gunn recently took to social media to confirm that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had wrapped shooting just weeks after The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Remember, the filmmaker has said on multiple occasions that this movie marks the end of an era for the current iteration of the team, and that has to mean we'll be saying goodbye to some beloved characters.

Will Drax be among them? Dave Bautista has talked openly about his dissatisfaction with his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe a lot in recent years, saying "the shirtless thing is getting harder" and revealing he feels "[Drax]'s journey has come full circle and I'm just ready to kind of step aside and wrap it up." The actor has even gone so far as to saying Marvel Studios has mishandled the character, expressing a desire to have been used as more than just a comedic presence in that world.

Sharing the same wrap photo as Gunn, Bautista said on Instagram that the threequel marks "[the] end of a journey that changed my life." Sounds pretty definitive, don't you think?

No one expected much from the pro wrestler turned actor when he was cast in Guardians of the Galaxy, but he delivered a standout performance with a lot of humour at its core. As a result, Drax's quest to take revenge on Thanos for what happened to his wife and daughter was sidelined for a light-hearted friendship with Mantis and a lot of, admittedly, very funny scenes in Avengers: Infinity War.

If this is it for Drax, we're hoping Bautista can go out on a high with a stronger story arc. We'll find out when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters worldwide on May 5, 2023.

Nah, nothing seemingly about it. He's done.

@KWilly - Yup,

Good for him think. I think after the whole Gunn fiasco they all agreed one more and done. I'd like to see Bautista take on some more roles like his Blade Runner 2049 character. Guy did so good with him limited screentime.

I’m so glad James Gunn is the one directing this. Really adds a cathartic finality to the film or at least it feels that way, sight unseen.

First Gillan, now Bautista. Wouldn't be surprised if Nebula and Drax are gonna bite the dust. Same with Quill and maybe even Rocket

@bkmeijer1 - Drax already bit the dust before.

@bkmeijer1 - yeah it looks like the team tries to stop Wanda

Sykes. From… appearing on Curb for a few episodes, good save Cuban! Thanks I really didn’t know what the crap I was goin for there

@TheWalkingCuban - and now I'm starting to think, what if Wanda just left for Counter-Earth and is gonna be the actual villain of the movie?

Now that would be a surprise.

@bkmeijer1 - One that I hope does not come to fruition

bkmeijer1 - 5/10/2022, 9:10 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - me neither.

Gunn is probably gonna give us High Evolutionary, because he likes to makes things personal for his characters. And he can tie a lot of personal stories to him

@bkmeijer1 - I’m going to keep my knowledge of HE to a minimum, honestly don’t know anything about em

@TheWalkingCuban - don't think you need a lot. Bet Gunn is just gonna take the basics just like he did with Ego

@bkmeijer1 - right I knew one thing about him and now I know a bunch of Gunn stuff about em, it’ll be even less for HE
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/10/2022, 10:41 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - same here. I'm kinda just expecting it to be a new character at this point (that has the name High Evolutionary).

It is interesting that both HE and Wanda have ties to Wundagore, but I don't think it's gonna factor into the backstory of the former at all.

I've loved the GoTG movies and expect this one to be exceptional, can't say i'm still not bummed out about Drax's portrayal though. Outside of one or 2 funny lines he's been useless, similar issue with it to how Hulk's turned out, we didn't get enough Angry Hulk and absolutely no Destroyer Drax

Other than gotg 1 he was a bore. They just ignored the Thanos and Drax conflict in endgame. All they needed was a 30 second scene like they did with Scarlett witch.

His invisible garbage was the worse.

He won't be missed. Batista ruined him in my opinion.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/10/2022, 9:05 AM
@Lokiwasright - I definitely agree he should've gotten a scene with Thanos, but I'm not too bummed he didn't get one either.

Wasn't his main conflict with Ronan anyway for killing his family?
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 5/10/2022, 9:29 AM
@bkmeijer1 - it was then he turned to thanos on a whim after Ronan died. Let’s all be honest though, I get Dave point but I can’t imagine most people go into GoTG thinking I’m here for drax and drax alone
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/10/2022, 10:10 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - same. I can do without that conflict. I am interested to see where Gunn's gonna take it next though with the character

I’m sure Drax is getting killed off as Bautista really wants zero reason to come back to Marvel. I just hope Nebula doesn’t die..

Kill Mantis instead lol

Cool. Recast and give us an actual badass Drax via the multiverse.

I read somewhere that Gunn was going to be instrumental in working with Feige and the original plan for phase 4 was to go the cosmic route, but then those disgusting tweets of Gunn’s were discovered and his subsequent firing screwed up that plan.

If that was the case you have to wonder what Phase 4 would have looked like and if they would have done more with the GOTG.
I think there is a lot of story there that we will never see.
We will see Adam Worlock in this movie, but there is no Nova, Stallone’s ravagers, no tie in to Silver Surfer or Galactus, the negative zone “leading to the fantastic 4, etc.

Personally I wouldnt have minded a more galactic phase 4.
It made sense and was introduced nicely at the end of phase 3.
I feel that this multiverse has been rushed and kind of out of nowhere.

Just my opinion.

Drax became my favorite so if he’s going to die let him die with honor. Show him reunite with his wife and kid. It’s too bad he wants to let go of the character so bad. He could have easy stuck around another ten years popping up in stuff.

I am putting money Gunn will pay Batista respect in this movie.. WhenGunn got fired, Batista was ONLY actor Who publicly and directly criticized that decision and dared Disney to fire him if they retaliated. I respect that a lot. I know Gunn must respect that too.

I've loved Dave in this role - I had literally no expectations going in to GOTG Vol 1 because all I knew him as was a wrestler, but he blew me away with how well he portrayed the character. Then again in Vol 2, and even in Infinity War and Endgame despite having much less to do. And also in other movies such as Blade Runner 2049. I completely underestimated him.

It's a shame that he seems to have become somewhat unhappy with the role, although I always felt like that was more to do with loyalty towards James Gunn during the brief period where he was fired by Disney for those resurfaced Tweets before being reinstated. I get the feeling that never sat right with him, which is totally understandable and I have to admit I respect the shit out of his loyalty. Hopefully Vol 3 gave him something a bit more fulfilling to do with the role.

And, with these comments as well as Gunn's own warnings that there are probably going to be some main character deaths in this movie, I have a very strong feeling Drax is going to die. If that happens I'll be really sad to see him go, but it also makes sense in the grand scheme of things. Hopefully before that happens he learns that his daughter survived and she's set up to become something similar to the comic book version of Moondragon, potentially taking her father's place on the team after his possible death.

Also I know this might be a hot take but I much prefer Drax being an alien like in the MCU to him being a human soul in a superhuman body designed specifically to kill Thanos like in the comics.
