What Do The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Mean For The MCU?

With the launch of the 'Guardians' just around the corner I thought it apt to take a look into what the existence of this galactic team of misfits means for the MCU at large. Come take a look!

Over the last few years Marvel has crafted an intricate, entertaining and generally adored universe by weaving together seemingly unrelated properties culminating in the global phenomenon “Marvel’s The Avengers”. What started with Iron Man and the Hulk has grown to include other notable heroes Captain America and the god of thunder, Thor himself. Even lesser known characters like the Black Widow or Falcon are getting on screen incarnations. Thus far phase 2 of Marvel’s cinematic universe has opted to play it safe, offering us follow-ups to its established franchises. But that is all about to change with the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy.

The Guardians are a little known commodity even in the realm of the comic aficionados marking this film venture as possibly the riskiest move Marvel Studios have made to date. Yet if numbers are anything to go by, any doubts people had about Marvel’s future after GotG should be long gone. The initial trailer for the summer blockbuster hit recently to an overwhelmingly positive response. People are ready for some Rocket Raccoon!

With the introduction of the Guardians this summer, the MCU is going to get a lot bigger. But not only does it open up the entire cosmic side of the universe it allows Marvel to take more risks and try new things. If the trailer is anything to go by fans will be subject to a tone not yet tapped by a prior MCU film. Audiences seem to be getting a darker, more “in your face” sense of humor than previously seen. Here are a few things GotG will bring to the table aside from a gun toting raccoon and a sentient tree man.

- The cosmic side of the universe will be bust wide open!
- Seemingly niche or outlandish properties all get a second look
- Proves that not all heroes in the MCU have to members of the Avengers

With Guardians of the Galaxy we don’t only get Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket and Groot (played by Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, David Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel respectively), we get an entire cosmos of opportunities along with them. GotG ventures to open up the literal Marvel universe. Aliens and other extraterrestrial life were hinted at in “The Avengers” but Guardians plans to bring them to the forefront. Races such as the Kree, Skrulls or Sakaaran are all ripe for adaptation and if Guardians can make its money back (I’m betting it does) I’m sure they won’t be far behind.

We will already be getting our first look at cosmic heavy weight. Ronan the Accuser in the upcoming august release and his appearance implies more to come. Usually with the Kree judge is the Supreme Intelligence, a giant disembodied head that holds all of the collective knowledge of the Kree people throughout their existence. Ronan’s presence could also be a precursor to the original Captain Mar-Vell, a Kree scientist sent to earth to gather secrets for the Kree Empire. He did eventually side with humanity and even gave Carol Danvers (Ms/Capt. Marvel) her eventual power set. The point here is that the settings, characters and themes brought up in this film carry further implication into the cosmic side of the MCU. We already have Thanos. We already have Ronan. Who’s to say we won’t be seeing other big names in the near future. I’m holding out for Gladiator of the Shi’ar myself and everyone is waiting on Adam Warlock to show up. There is also one more character audiences have been waiting to make a return…

Fans have been clamoring for a Hulk sequel ever since he stole the show in “The Avengers”. Assuming the success of GotG, one of the most beloved Hulk/Avengers story lines may be on the table; Planet Hulk. While rumors were going around earlier last year that this was the direction Marvel was headed Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon (the mind behind said Avengers) quickly debunked the speculation. They claimed that the film would be too CGI heavy and “out there” for audiences to sink into. Well, if people can accept a walking tree and maniacal raccoon I think they can suspend belief a little longer for a giant green gladiator (though I can understand the CGI argument). Properties that were considered too niche or “out there” will immediately be put back on the table. “Guardians of the Galaxy” not only gives us a new, fresh take on the superhero genre but opens up possibilities for even further risk taking.

If Marvel truly has been hesitant to get a female led hero off the ground the success of Guardians will be the push they need to kick it in to high gear. Black Panther not white enough? Well neither were Drax, Gamora, Rocket or Groot! You can bet Marvel will be willing to take the risk after they find a place in the public’s heart.

Finally, “Guardians of the Galaxy” proves what I always thought to be true but many have questioned, not all heroes in the MCU have to be a part of the Avengers. Some people were already worried at the number of heroes crammed into the first Avengers (6), and with more properties getting a shot at stardom those worries are only growing. What GotG shows us is that there is a place for these heroes outsider of the massive crossover. If the Guardians can stand on their own it will pave the way for lesser know characters to not only make the jump to the big screen but stand on their own without having to rely on Iron Man or Thor.

Apparently Marvel has been having trouble finding a place for Dr. Strange on the team, I say give him a solo film and keep him off the Avengers until the time is right. Not every hero should be a member, which will quickly lead to over crowding and just make things more complicated for the fan base. Let some characters breathe on their own. Also, not all characters fit with the direction Marvel seems to be headed. Thanos, a murderous alien psychopath obsessed with death, seems to be the big bad at the end of the rainbow. A character like Strange that is steeped in magic and monsters hardly meshes well with an intergalactic serial killer.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” invites audiences to a whole new world, as well as open the door for other obscure properties. The Marvel Studios film hits theatres August 1st, 2014.

Check back for all things Guardians!

Nice article man!!
I would love to see more cosmic properties, GOTG2 to lead into Avengers 3 (where I think Star Lord and that bunch of A-holes will have at least a small part on the action).
Ms Marvel? Yes please!!! Introduce her in GOTG2 and then have her in her own movie. I also would love to see Gladiator in a movie, he is a cool character. But I am most excited for Ronan, he is the ultimate cosmic badass.

I would like to see a hulk sequel, but with the leader and others, I mean, based on Earth. Not interested in planet Hulk.
And please NO Inhumans, I dont think we need them.

@DanMcNice Thanks :D I would be down for any Hulk sequel actually. I think I'm one of the few vocal fans of the first one haha. The Inhumans are odd and could be difficult to adapt but I think they could have a place eventually. Especially if they go deep into Kree history.

I thought of making an article that would be titled similarly, but explore something else ENTIRELY. First things first though... your article.

Been saying this a long time now, but CBMs... yeah, they're flashy, yeah they're adapted from existing material, but they're still movies. You go to, let's say.... Wal-Mart! Go to Wal-Mart, check out the clothing section. Lots of similar t-shirts, work out shirts, tanks, hoodies, button-ups, dress... and they're mostly non-descript. Check on the shelf, however, and you see a bunch of Marvel/DC/TV/Video Game based t-shirts with printing of a hero or Fox character - and they sell just as much as the non-descript clothing does.

We're fans, so we might just see it a whole different way, but when it comes to the movies, they are character-based just like every other movie out there. People complain when a movie is "over-crowded" with villains, as though they are a special kind of character who deserves more screen time than say, JJJ.

You know, most adults don't read comics. A lot of people here, myself included, really didn't read more than one or two character-based comic books before the movies started blowing up the box office. It sparks interest, and THAT is what it's all about.

You know what's hilarious. You'll see thumbnails on YouTube of certain videos, and they'll feature partial nudity. And then it's like you get Rick-Rolled when you click on it, because "where's the tits?!" Obviously, movies have to be (or should be) more honest about what they're promoting, but the moral of the story is - you don't need a fanbase to be successful.
---

Anyway, my article was going to be about the diversity. The lead cast consists of hilarious white guy Chris Pratt, sexy black Zoe Saldana, and massive Filipino bodybuilder Dave Bautista. Of course, just about every other actor is white, but you know, it's something. It's not just the actors portraying the characters, but also the different alien races and civilizations being explored. Will we see the Kree (the actual Kree), or just Ronan - hmmm? Will Yondu and Nebula be made Kree to account for their blue skin, or will they represent different species?

You know, I'm a big Mass Effect fan, probably the biggest one on this site. I can't point to my favorite part of the series, but one thing I really REALLY admire is the work they put into their alien races. You've got the almost bird-like Turians who appear to have a big bug up their asses and are super militaristic and orderly. You've got the amphibious Salarians who are hyper-intelligent but are colder, detached, and have a 40 year lifespan. The Asari are a mono-gendered race appearing female, but have an almost entirely psychic system of reproducing, and can live for a thousand years. Krogan have similar lifespans if they manage to live that long, as they are an unevolved reptilian/shark-like race of warriors who live and crave battle. Quarians are mysterious in that they were driven off their unique homeworld and have had to live in environment suits for so long that they basically have the AIDS equivalent whenever there's an infection, and are therefore isolated.

They all have history, a unique biology and civilization to boot, and of course, politics. I doubt we'd see something that deep in Guardians of the Galaxy, but it's nice to catch a glimpse.

Great article. 2 things though, one is in the original Infinity Gauntlet story Dr. Strange played a huge role (along with the Silver Surfer) in the story and Adam Warlock is pretty much a magic powered character as well. When he comes (and he will) that will put 3 magic powered heroes in the cinematic universe (Scarlet Which being the 3rd. Also I'm not a huge fan of the Inhuman but I like what they could mean in terms of cosmic story for the MCU. I think you are dead on. I've been saying since day one that this is Marvels new plan, it's going to run just like the comics do. In 10 years well have 3-4 movies a year, 2 TV shows and the occasional Netflix series, all in continuity with each other.

I think it should be the first in the Marvel's Cosmic Universe. All takes place within the MCU, just like Netflix's Marvel Knights Universe. There should be one movie a year: GotG, Nova, etc

@Omega Thanks man :D means a lot. I plan on doing more articles like this whenever I can. I figured I wouldn't be able to report on the news before others here so I might as well try and right articles with a little bit of me in em.

@Sikwon Thanks! I know Strange can easily fit in in terms of story line but I was thinking strictly thematically. Right now they are headed down a very sci-fi path. Alien invasions, cosmic terrorists and intergalactic bounty hunters you know. To suddenly throw demons in to the mix may be jarring for the general audience. People like me and you don't have a problem with it but I can understand where the questions from Marvel come from, if they exist that is.

I still don't understand why everyone thinks people will have a hard time accepting a Raccoon and a talking Tree. That's pretty much the basis for every animated kids film that comes out. People will have no issue with those elements. Thanos, Ronan, Drax...those are the characters I imagine the audience would have a hard time accepting if any. I doubt the audience will have issues accepting any of it though. The general audience is ignorant, yes, but they're not retarded. If everyone is introduced properly and the story is fluid and makes sense, the audience will follow it all with very little difficulty.

I also still doubt Marvel will do a Planet Hulk film. It just seems like a huge stretch to me, but hey, anything is possible, I suppose.

@heisenberg I agree with you butI have heard a lot of people say that this movie looks ridiculous based solely on the fact that it features Rocket and Groot. The only thing different about Drax and Gamora are their skin tone. I'm not expecting a Planet Hulk film either but I thought it made for a good example of a property a lot of people have been asking for and is a more out there proposition.

If only Fox would let Silver Surfer and Galactus go. The MCU badly needs these characters.

nice article. for the record though, marvel does not own the rights to the skrulls right now, so a secret invasion storyline is probably not very likely. as much as I want a planet hulk film, i do agree that it would be a waste of mark ruffalo having him be cgi the whole time. if they can find a way to work banner in human form into the story then I'm all for that. i also think that we WILL see the gotg and the avengers team up in avengers 3 to fight thanos. the smartest thing they could possibly do is to have iron man become part of the guardians in a sequel. that would ensure their place in pop culture for years to come

@Nickhart It was actually confirmed by James Gunn that Marvel has part ownership of the Skrulls. While they may not be able to get away with an empire of them I could see Superskrull showing up at some point. They do not own the Badoon though, for anyones general curiosity.

I'm excited to see the whole cosmic side open up. I was never that into these stories in the comics, but I've learned something from the movies we've gotten so far. The more I liked the comic, the more frustrating I find the movie to be. If I know too much about the property going into it I have too many expectations for the movie.

Whats even better is that once I've seen the movie, I can go back and read the old issues it was based, and really enjoy them. I read almost exclusively Spider-Man and X-Men growing up, these have been the most disappointing movies for me.

All that aside, I'm really hoping to see Ms. Marvel introduced in GotG2. I don't think they'll do a Planet Hulk movie. I do think Avengers 3 is going to be a World War Hulk type storyline. I figure in AoU we'll see the mind stone used as the means that gives Ultron conciesness. Maybe it gets used on Hulk too, leaving Banner unable to control him anymore. That would give them a good reason to ship him off planet at the end, and set him up to come back with a chip on his shoulder for the third. But hey, I'm just guessing. For what its worth I also think Stark will be leading SHEILD by the end of AoU, and I'm hoping to see US Agent in Captian America 3.

I think it goes without saying that we all should be rooting for GOTG to be a hit. Yes even you DC fans too because if an obscure as hell property can become a hit, well I think would inspire WB to look at their catalogue and you know try to make another movie again without Batman or Superman. Hopefully this time a hit.

Fiege nixed the idea of a Planet Hulk movie because it wouldn't feature Bruce Banner. Rufalo's portrayal of Banner was a high point of The Avengers, so I expect to see a lot of Banner in the next Hulk movie. I would think it'd be 60/40 Banner/Hulk split. Remember, Banner is a baddass even when he's not an enormous green ragemonster.

thanks for the article Bobo
