GHOSTBUSTERS Director Jason Reitman Under Fire After Promising To "Hand The Movie Back To The Fans"
There has been some controversy surrounding Sony's decision to return to the original Ghostbusters and disregard Paul Feig's 2016 reboot, and now director Jason Reitman's comments have fanned the flames...
It was recently announced that director Jason Reitman was working on a follow-up to his father's original Ghostbusters movie that would completely disregard Paul Feig's 2016 reboot. This didn't sit well with fans of that film, who believe the talented actors that played the all-female team deserve better.
Now, Reitman has raised the ire of the internet yet again after comments made during an appearance on the most recent episode of the Bill Burr Podcast.
“This is going to be a love letter to Ghostbusters," stated the filmmaker. "I love this franchise. I grew up watching it. I consider myself the first Ghostbusters fan. I was like seven years old when that movie came out and I love it. I want to make a movie for my fellow Ghostbusters fans. We are, in every way, trying to go back to the original technique and hand the movie back to the fans."
You might think these are fairly innocuous comments (and you'd be right), but for many the words "Ghostbusters fans" conjure nasty images of the harassment Feig and his cast were subjected to after the reboot was announced.
Of course, a toxic element exists in all fandoms, but some people simply seem to be incapable of differentiating between the sexist morons that buried the movie before it was even released, and genuine fans of the original that were against the idea of any reboot, but were willing to give Feig's new take a chance.
The bottom line is this: Whether you loved, hated or were indifferent to Ghostbusters 2016, it wasn't a big enough earner for the studio to consider a sequel, and returning to the franchise's roots is a smart move.
At any rate, Reitman has since clarified his comments, and was backed up by Feig:
