The second trailer for Pet Sematary is now online, and it gives us a terrifying new look at the upcoming Stephen King adaptation - along with a couple of big spoilers!

In a major alteration to the source material, it won't be Gage that's resurrected in the ancient burial ground of the title, but his big sister, Ellie! As the teaser progresses, we see the now malevolent child pay a visit to her grieving family and their neighbor Jud, who winds up on the wrong end of a scalpel.

In an interview with EW, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura explain why they made the change. “Gage is so young, you can’t really do that much with him,” he says. “So this way, we’re able to really get underneath our affected child. We’re able to get into the psychological horror of a child [coming back] because of her age.”

It remains to be seen how King purists react to this pretty major change to the original story. Check out the trailer below along with two new posters, and let us know what you think.

Pet Sematary is set for release on April 5. Check out some previously released stills below, along with some character and plot details.

Jud And Ellie

The first image features Jud Crandall (John Lithgow) and little Ellie Creed (Jeté Laurence).

In this take on the story, Ellie is the first to encounter Jud when she inadvertently stumbles upon the titular animal graveyard, completely unaware that there's another, much more sinister cemetery just beyond it.

No Turning Back

Jud and Louis (Jason Clarke) go for a little stroll. Can you guess what's in the bag?

These two become fast friends, but the grieving father soon regrets taking the advice of his lonely old neighbor.

The Creed Family

A happier moment for Ellie, mom Rachel (Amy Seimetz) and Gage (played by twins Hugo and Lucas Lavoie) - though Louis looks like something is on his mind.

The Pet Cemetery

The graveyard of the title is a peaceful place where people bring their deceased pets to lay them to rest, but beyond it is an ancient Mi’kmaq burial ground where things that are gone can sometimes come back.

Church

Bad kitty!

Winston Churchill is Ellie's pet cat, and when he falls victim to the busy motorway in front of The Creed's house, Louis doesn't see the harm in burying him in the dark place Jud tells him about. That's a decision he soon regrets.

Rachel And Gage

Fans of the book and the original movie will recall one of the most terrifying aspects was Rachel's flashback/vision of her sister Zelda, who will also be a part of this new adaptation.

It’s more accurate to the book, I’ll just say that,” co-director Dennis Widmyer reveals. “In the original movie, it’s a 21-year-old guy in drag playing it, and in the book, as you recall, it’s a 10-year-old girl.”

Behind-The-Scenes

Finally, we have a BTS shot of Clarke and Lithgow alongside the film's directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kölsch, who are best known for the 2014 Hollywood horror-satire Starry Eyes.

@TheOscarPanther - They should’ve kept it with Gage dying. It hurts a little more because he was the baby. That’s why I can’t watch the original again.

Damn, I wish they had hidden the role reversal! Would have been an interesting surprise :/

@newhire13 - Yeah. It would have been better to keep that change a surprise. Also, this trailer goes too far into “just showed the whole movie” territory. I’m less curious about this remake now than before I watched the trailer (-love the original).

Most disturbing novels? Not even close.

There was nothing inside Pet Sematary that was "disturbing" (unless you consider a handjob disturbing), especially compared to the sick shit King has written over the years.

I can name at least 5 books or stories where he wrote absolutely disgusting stuff, from homosexual anal rape with a gun in The Stand, to a wannabe nazi kid dreaming about raping a jewish 16 year-old girl with an electrical condom in Apt Pupil, a pregnant African American maid licking semen off the sheets instead of washing them in Dedication, child anal rape in The Library Policeman, or Beverly being gangbanged by her 6 male friends when she was 11 years old. On that note, King has commented that when he wrote that story, he actually imagined himself as the 6th kid having sex with 11 year-old Bev. He wrote Bill's personality after his own.

That's Stephen King for you. In the world we live in where everything is an issue, I can't believe they keep adapting this guy's stories and giving him even more money, instead of shedding the light on how much of a racist psycho he is.

@Asturgis - Shakespeare wrote some f***ed up content. May as well ban all his books in this day and age...

@Asturgis - Find me an instance where he actually did this in real life and we’ll talk, otherwise, ignore it and move on with your life. Unless you want to come after George R.R. Martin and maya angelou too you drama queen

@Asturgis - If you can't handle disturbing horror then stick to little kids books
