THE INVISIBLE MAN, THE HUNT, EMMA And More To Hit Home Video Early Due To COVID-19

As the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic results in movie theaters closing their doors around the world, Universal Pictures has decided to make its current theatrical releases available on Home Video earlier than planned.

The studio has revealed that The Invisible Man, Emma, and The Hunt are coming to VOD on Friday, March 20, and will cost $19.99 to rent. Meanwhile, Trolls World Tour will be available to watch On-Demand from April 10.

"Universal Pictures has a broad and diverse range of movies with 2020 being no exception," NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell said in a statement. "Rather than delaying these films or releasing them into a challenged distribution landscape, we wanted to provide an option for people to view these titles in the home that is both accessible and affordable. We hope and believe that people will still go to the movies in theaters where available, but we understand that for people in different areas of the world that is increasingly becoming less possible."

Can we expect other studios to follow suit? It's definitely a possibility - especially if these movies perform well on Digital platforms. Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan has already said she wouldn't be opposed to releasing the movie early, so keep an eye out for updates.

Kind of shocking since they were such recent releases. But a very cool and very smart move. Especially considering large cities are shutting down theaters altogether for the time being.

That’s a welcomed site. These movies would’ve been pirated to death anyways. Maybe they can release last of us 2 as well *trying to get over face*

@MyCoolYoung - Me neither to be honest, was never a fan of turn based combat so I have never played a Final Fantasy game. Buuut...I played the FF7R demo on PS4 and that shit got me hooked with their new action based combat system, so this will be my first ever.

19.99 is pretty steep though

@MyCoolYoung - If you're watching it with a group, it's cheaper than general admission.

@Benjamitesandwich - that group is not coming to my house in these times lol

@MyCoolYoung - It should be $19.99 and you are guaranteed the digital copy upon release.

@SonOfAGif - that’s actually a pretty great idea

@MyCoolYoung - Thanks. You figure most people pay $3.99 or so to rent after release. At least at $19.99 you are guaranteed to get a customer and they can get the digital as part of the purchase. The studios would make more money long term.

@E4Nigma - I've been making the case for it for years. I know the arguments against it (and I'm sympathetic, truly), but when people are spending thousands of dollars to put big screen TVs in their living rooms, the theater has to offer something special to compete with that.

And risk of contagion just exacerbates the underlying trend.
