UPDATE: Guillermo Del Toro's At The Mountains Of Madness To Film This June, Tom Cruise Set To Star

Del Toro's adaptation of the classic H.P. Lovecraft tale is finally getting underway after literally years of talk. Producer Don Murphy spoke to io9 all about it..

We have been hearing about this one for a long time, but it seems as if Guillermo Del Toro will finally get behind a camera to helm At The Mountains Of madness later this year. Don Murphy will produce the film along with James Cameron, and he had this to say to io9 about it..

Murphy told us that the movie is "supposed to shoot in June" and Tom Cruise is set to star in it, as recently rumored. And he added that the script is very close to the H.P. Lovecraft source material.

It's worth noting that despite what Murphy says here, Cruise is not yet locked in to the project(according to his reps anyway), but I'm sure that's just a formality. For those unaware of the story behind Lovecraft's creepy tale, here is a short synopsis..

A complete short novel, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS is a tale of terror unilke any other. The Barren, windswept interior of the Antarctic plateau was lifeless—or so the expedition from Miskatonic University thought. Then they found the strange fossils of unheard-of creatures...and the carved stones tens of millions of years old...and, finally, the mind-blasting terror of the City of the Old Ones.

All we know aside from the above is that longtime Del Toro collaborator Ron Perlman will also star and James Cameron had this to say about the production..

"We haven't seen anything like this... since Aliens. The design work is phenomenal, both the three-dimensional and two-dimensional design work, the physical maquettes, the CG test scenes; the artwork is phenomenal. The fans certainly won't want for a visual feast with this film."

Update: I'm afraid this news could be premature. Word is that nothing is set in stone yet and Del Toro might actually direct a different movie for Warner Bros called Pacific Rim in the interim while Universal arses about deciding what to do with At The Mountains Of Madness. Sad news for Lovecraft fans, although Pacific Rim is apparently also about giant monsters of some kind.

Sounds like a great movie. Not familiar with the short story, but I'm sure i can dig it up. Tom Cruise, despite his personal life and craziness, is awesome on screen. Very few movies of his ever disappoint and Del Toro has some serious creative genius when it comes to creatures.

Lovecraft wasn't exactly a "stable" guy...why not have an "unstable" but capable actor bring some of that weird vibe to the film.

Gotta admit though I HATE Tom Cruise's offscreen antics...he's a decent actor. (When given the right roles.)

At the Mountains of Madness casting alert!
Dyer = Tom Cruise
Lake = Mel Gibson
Danforth = Charlie Sheen

With all this tiger blood I'm sure the flick will be #winning at the box office!

Tom Cruise haters: I feel the same as you. But I don't just hate him. I hate his filthy cult religion too.

But still this mind bending crazy story just SO needs to be told big budget! And if they think they need big names like that to do it, well then whatever. So long as it gets done.

WHY DOES TOM CRUISE STILL GET WORK?
jbak368
jbak368 - 3/7/2011, 8:34 PM
Tom Cruise is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT for this part. He has the exact kind of presence called for, and the star power to make this movie a real tentpole, not to mention the fact that he plays broken men far better than he plays true-blue heroes. Seriously, have any of you even read this story? James Cameron producing Guillermo del Toro's mega-budget R-rated 3D AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS starring Tom [frick]ing Cruise is the best movie news I think I've ever heard.

jbak368 - 3/7/2011, 8:39 PM
Also, whoever said The Last Samurai is Cruise's only good film needs to watch some more movies, as that's one of his lesser performances. Along with Minority Report, it's a movie in which he confuses acting with suffocating. He's not always great, and he tends to be better when he's playing bad guys (or at least assholes), but I mean [frick]ing Rain Man, Magnolia, Collateral, The Color of Money, Eyes Wide Shut, Born on the Fourth of July - mother[frick]er can act with the right part, and this part is PERFECT.
