We have been hearing about this one for a long time, but it seems as if Guillermo Del Toro will finally get behind a camera to helm At The Mountains Of madness later this year. Don Murphy will produce the film along with James Cameron, and he had this to say to io9 about it..
Murphy told us that the movie is "supposed to shoot in June" and Tom Cruise is set to star in it, as recently rumored. And he added that the script is very close to the H.P. Lovecraft source material.
It's worth noting that despite what Murphy says here, Cruise is not yet locked in to the project(according to his reps anyway), but I'm sure that's just a formality. For those unaware of the story behind Lovecraft's creepy tale, here is a short synopsis..
A complete short novel, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS is a tale of terror unilke any other. The Barren, windswept interior of the Antarctic plateau was lifeless—or so the expedition from Miskatonic University thought. Then they found the strange fossils of unheard-of creatures...and the carved stones tens of millions of years old...and, finally, the mind-blasting terror of the City of the Old Ones.
All we know aside from the above is that longtime Del Toro collaborator Ron Perlman will also star and James Cameron had this to say about the production..
"We haven't seen anything like this... since Aliens. The design work is phenomenal, both the three-dimensional and two-dimensional design work, the physical maquettes, the CG test scenes; the artwork is phenomenal. The fans certainly won't want for a visual feast with this film."
Update: I'm afraid this news could be premature. Word is that nothing is set in stone yet and Del Toro might actually direct a different movie for Warner Bros called
Pacific Rim in the interim while Universal arses about deciding what to do with
At The Mountains Of Madness. Sad news for Lovecraft fans, although
Pacific Rim is apparently also about giant monsters of some kind.
