Jon Favreau Shares His Thoughts On Marvel Recasting The Hulk!

The Iron Man 2 director reveals how he feels about Ed Norton's departure from the role of Bruce Banner and whether he has any plans on getting more involved with The Avengers...

"It's tricky," the director told IGN Movies at Comic Con. "I know Edward, and I dig the guy's talent tremendously. He's always been a very great guy...I'm sure that however this comes out, it's going to be something that's amenable to both the filmmaker and the studio."

Hulk

"I know that we faced the challenge of recasting with Don Cheadle and Terrence Howard, and although I think breaking continuity is always a challenge and should be avoided whenever possible, it is the reality of the movie business that sometimes things don't work out."

When asked about whether he has any plans on getting involved with The Avengers and the other upcoming Marvel Studios movies he said, "I'm here because of my success with Marvel for the most part. I've felt tremendous creative support, and as they cut their teeth as a studio, I cut my teeth as a big filmmaker. So we've grown a lot together and I am completely invested in the success of that studio."

"I really want to see the Iron Man stuff play out really well through these other movies and hopefully collaborate in the future."

"I think breaking continuity is always a challenge and should be avoided whenever possible, it is the reality of the movie business that sometimes things don't work out."

I think this is a very important statement. Stuff happens and we have no idea what actually went down. Anyway, whatever happened is not Ruffalo's fault and, thus, I hope he knocks it out of the park. That was a very well worded and thought out statement from Favreau.

@CaptainProg- So you're a Twilight fan? : ) Just remember Ruffalo is not the guy who made the decision for Norton to leave.

@Intruder- Ruffalo's had a lot of personal tragedy to work into the tortured soul that is Bruce Banner. I like Norton just fine, but that's just how stuff works. I'm not taking it personally.

I liked Norton's banner, and hate recasts, but if this had to happen I think Ruffalo is a great replacement.

DCMF: Thanks man! :) Although Ruffalo seems like an odd choice, I have faith in Marvel's decision, especially after his excellent performances in Shutter Island and Zodiac! (either of which you should check out if you're still not sure how amazing an actor he is!)

I agree Ruffalo is a good actor, but do not judge by shutter island. That movie sux bad. It's not his acting it's just bad.

The man has ample qualifications for Banner, not the least of which his brain tumor and brother's death. Give him a shot. Batman survived losing Keaton, Hulk will survive losing Norton.

I hate that the recasted, but I think Ruffalo is a great actor who makes the best out of supporting roles. Just see 'Zodiac' and 'Shutter Island' for proof.

Well if iron man is in this movie that I will have to give mark a chance, besides people lets not judge so fast yet I mean this starts filming next year and we don't yet that mark can do the job, lets clam I know you fanboys will bashing everything that comes out so just wait till next year maybe we get the offical first pictures of the set and cast and maybe you might like him (don't judge him yet you never know)

OdinsBeard - 7/27/2010, 7:37 PM
they should've just written banner out of the movie and had hulk the whole time until they could get things squared away with norton and bring him back for avengers in the future. there have been many hulk comics without banner in them. i am happy they are going to have the character of burce banner tho. but mark ruffalo doesn't strike me as the geeky science type. but he's a good actor so im sure he's capable of pulling it off.

what can i say tho? i want this movie to be so good and i believe it will. it just won't feel the same not seeing norton up there. oh well maybe my mind will change once cap and thor come out. might not care about banner so much then.

Here we go again. Give Mark Ruffalo a break. He's a really good actor. You can't blame the man for taking the role. Things didn't work out between Norton and Marvel. The role had to be cast. Bana wasn't chosen so I think that they made an excellent choice. So just be thankful that the film is getting made. Stop whinning and complaining. I remember this same vitriol directed at Micheal Keaton when he was chosen to do Batman...now you can't beat MF's saying how much they miss Keaton's version.

@ MarsAmbassador - Sir, I can see you're upset, and very passionate about the continuity of the last two Hulk films and the future of the Hulk line of films.

I'd like to point out that although Norton's movie was mostly a reboot, it wasn't a new origin story. They let Universal's take on Hulk stand as the origin, then followed up with Marvel's first take on the character with Hulk already running from General Ross.

There is as least some continuation of the story there, even if the continuity was a bit skewed. Marvel had just recently received the rights back, after all. But now, moving forward without the very talented Ed Norton, I have no doubt that the #1 goal for Marvel is to continue with the franchise that Ed Norton started, including more Hulk solo films after The Avengers.

Right now, we only have Iron Man and Hulk as our continuity base. That will all change next summer. Once Thor and Captain America come out, we will have a much fuller understanding of Marvel's cinematic universe, and by the time The Avengers hits theaters, the actor playing Bruce Banner will mean much less in the overall film than it might seem to us right now.

Plus, with Norton gone, Marvel believes they have a better chance of expanding the Hulk franchise, and doing so with less hassle and heartache, despite Norton's inspired performance for that single movie.

Rest your screaming green avatar, old chum. Things are always greenest before the dawn (of awesomeness!)

You know, I think that no matter what else Jon Favreau does in his career (and I really do respect the man and what he's done for us comic fans!), the first thing that comes to mind when I see him is still, "Uh.... I did not exhale....?"

"Only because they're a bunch of no-minds who don't think for themselves but instead now think it's fine because Joss Whedon toed the company line and told them he was fine with it."

Oh yes. Everyone should only ever agree with you... THAT wouldn't make them followers AT ALL!!!

Mars@"It has as much to do with the Avengers now as the Bana Hulk movie does." - thats what bothers me so much. it's like the avengers is only building off of Iron Man right now. (EDIT: but Skylar was right. even tho it was a reboot it was sort of a pseudo-sequel.)

and yeah you get people going "oh here we go. people are hating on ruffalo. god they always hate" but it's like why can't that be seen as support for Norton? i dgaf if he's an asshole. he probably signed a multi-picture deal originally that he would've been happy with. but they probably tried to change it up for the avengers. to each their own - no bad guys, no good guys, just business. im just a little sad about it is all.... Norton was the perfect Banner. i still saw Norton when i watched him but that's not a problem if Norton looks like Banner.
