Jon Favreau And Robert Downey Jr. Weigh In On Iron Man 3 And The Avengers!

Chatting in-depth on Shane Black's Iron Man 3, check out a recent interview with former director Jon Favreau & star Robert Downey Jr., also discussing The Avengers

During today's Hero Complex Film Festival, amid Jon Favreau's live Q&A session, 'Tony Stark' actor Robert Downey Jr. made a guest appearance, taking a breather from filming Marvel's crossover spectacle The Avengers. While they both ultimately discuss the Shane Black-directed third Iron Man installment, and difficulties in it's development, Downey also dots in-depth on so-far filming his 'Tony Stark' reprisal in Avengers. With a transcript courtesy of Slash Film, and the audio available via Collider, check out what was said below!

RDJ: Here’s the first thing I want to say. The most difficult part of making Iron Man 3 is going to be negotiating Jon Favreau’s acting deal.

Favreau: If The Freak isn’t in it, I’m not doing it. If Happy Hogan doesn’t turn into The Freak, I’m not doing it. Here’s what happens to Happy Hogan, he marries Pepper Potts…

RDJ: Wait a minute, you want both?

Favreau: I want a love scene with Pepper Potts with my shirt on and I want to transform into The Freak.

RDJ: - The negotiations have begun and so far I’m in agreement on every point. Well Shane, interestingly enough, there was a point when Jon and I were stuck on an idea [with a previous film]. We were just in an exploratory phase. So I said, ‘We should talk to Shane.’ And I was like, ‘Shane, we can’t really pay.’ And he was like, ‘Bring me some salmon and some blueberries.’ And we went to Yoda’s house in Miracle Mile and it wound up coming in handy, particularly for a couple scenes. So what I can say about this kind of circle of life thing is Shane, as he’s getting into the process [to direct Iron Man 3] and getting his sea legs and stuff, he goes, ‘When can we talk to Jon?’ So there’s going to be this kind of conglomerate of efforts.

Favreau: And I love the franchise and I’m a big fan of Shane’s as well so hopefully I can be helpful because I want to see this thing grow and transform. And actually, when it finally landed on Shane, it was like, ‘All right, that’s gonna be something interesting.’ Especially because it’s gonna be so difficult for whoever does that one because although it’s Iron Man 3, the whole Avengers thing…I guess in comics you can say that it’s an individual storyline and you can break it off into a group. But in movies, it’s hard not to take into consideration what just happened. What are you gonna say? ‘They all just lost their cell phones and you can’t get help?’ So it’s going to take a lot of ingenuity to make it make sense to a mainstream film audience as well as a comic book audience.

RDJ: But again the toughest man of Iron Man 3 will be Jon Favreau’s day rate. It’s gonna be huge and I’ll see that they pay it.

RDJ: (On Avengers) Well, I hate everybody. [Audience laughs] I’m not talking about the cast, I’m not talking about Joss. What I mean is I tend to look at a scene and say ‘This is absolutely impossible, we can’t shoot this, it’s horrible. I can tell you 10 other movies its been in, I refuse.’ I usually start off the morning by refusing to do what I’ve signed on to do. So I brought that attitude, happily. I just thought ‘How are you gonna put all of us clowns together? He’s wearing a suit, he’s all jacked up, he’s so and so and poor Mark Ruffalo, he’s gonna out do us’. And we’re about six weeks in and I have to say Joss Whedon is nailing it. He’s so smart and so good. And it’s gonna be great. I can’t believe I just said it, I never could’ve believed this but it’s gonna be great.

Iron Man 3 is slated for theaters May 3, 2013; Marvel's The Avengers picks up when an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security. And Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston & Stellan Skarsgård, the film releases May 4, 2012!

I'm just glad they're addressing Happy Hogan and that they're working to keep him part of the franchise.

Yeah, how do you go from the Avengers to not being able to get help from the team? Maybe that's what they were setting up with the whole "consultant" thing at the end of IM2. Tony is still doing his lone gun-slinger act.

Won't be excited about it unless it is really, really different from the existing films.

if this last year of geeking out over Thor (which I just saw today for the 4th time) is any comparison, then this next year of waiting for the Avengers is going to be torture!!!! I really cannot wait for it!!!

ok, got that out, feeling better...

Requirements for Avengers:

1. "Hulk is the strongest there is!!!" (Smash something)
2. either "I say thee NAY!" (throws hammer)or
"For Odin! For Asgard!" (throws hammer)
3. Cap schools them all in a "fun sparring match"

sounds like "RDJ" has been hittin' that CharlieSheen!

RDJ: if I string together enough jibberish, they'll either think its too cool for them to follow, or they're too square to understand!

Apologies, Anthrax. You are correct, sir.

And "Yoda" is a nickname for Shane (kinda small guy - see Predator). Not sure about the salmon and blueberries, though. Bribe food??

If you listen to the entire interview, RDJ also comments that Jon was making this cool movie hanging out with Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig! while he was... hanging out in the desert.

lol Nice RDJ, nice.

IM3 better have Mandarin in it. I do not want to see him fight someone in a stark-suit again.

I just watched IM2 today. It's not as bad as I originally thought, but it's not great either. It's a good movie though, and I'm glad I gave it another chance. Micky was awesome, RDJ did his Stark thing, Cheadle was cool and believable as Rhodes, Scar Jo did her thing (it was a bit off mainly because of the absence of the accent), and Paltrow had great chemistry with Downey. All in all 3 out of 5. BTW, X-Men 1st class gets a 2 out of 5 for me, Thor, a 3.5 out of 5 and Origins gets a 3 out of 5 (FTW)!!!

What I really wanted in iron man 2 that they didn't show was a suit up scene for war machine. I would've loved to see a militarized version of the scene from im1. Not as sleek, not as polished; something that would have added more weight to that suit for the viewer.

Mandarin better be the main villain. And an R-Rated deleted sex scene on the Blu Ray extras with Gwyneth and Favreau.

Would like something a little less technology based. If you have Mandarin, then make the rings alien. How bout Fin Fang Foom? I know they had him in the comic tie-in but forget it and make him an alien. Just something that is not made from technology.

I agree, I mean apart from the final battle, Iron Man 2 was class, especially the easter egg with cap's shield. The next one should focus on Mandarin and Tony's drinking problem. It'll be interestin to see how the Avengers storyline plays into the movie.
