Jon Favreau Says Marvel Didn't Have Much Faith In Robert Downey Jr As IRON MAN

Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man is arguable one of the greatest casting choices by Marvel, despite them nit initially believing in the idea of the casting according to director Jon Favreau.

Jon Favreau was the lucky man to direct the first to Iron Man films, but was also the man to persuade Marvel into casting Robert Downey Jr as the titular character, something that has went on to become one of the greatest casting choices of all time. It's difficult to imagine seeing anyone else in the role, but believe it or not Marvel Studios didn't have a tough time picturing someone different in the role, but when they were convinced of Robert Downey Jr, they knew that they struck gold. Jon Favreau has been promoting his newest film The Chef all over the place recently, and even talked to 100.3 The Jack FM earlier this month about the gamble that was taken in deciding to cast RDJ in the now-famous role. “I remember when we cast Robert Downey Jr. in ‘Iron Man’, and I was told no several times… It was my job as a director to show that it was the best choice creatively…and now the Marvel Universe is the biggest franchise in film history.” At the time, Marvel didn't seem like they wanted to take a big risk and cast someone who was arguably more known for his drug issues that he was with his actual roles, but now Marvel is casting many unknown actors in huge roles and taking many, many risks. Their ability to be able to trust younger and less experienced actors is mostly due to casting Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man. “The one thing I think I have a really special ability with is having an eye for other people’s talent,” Jon continued, “and really being able to see the potential in somebody else, and help cultivate that… I’ve been involved with a lot of careers that have shot up between Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell in ‘Elf’, and Robert Downey was yet another opportunity to see someone’s potential and help support them.”

Robert is now considered by many to be the face of Marvel Studios, even being invested in the role enough to sign back on for more films even though he wasn't required to. He has taken much fame with the role, and loves his fans for helping him out with getting him back on track with his career. Jon Favreau wrapped up the Iron Man portion of the interview by talking a bit more about how perfect they eventually thought he was for the part after they got him in to do some scenes for them. “Everybody knew [Robert Downey Jr.] was talented,” he continued. “Certainly by studying the ‘Iron Man’ role and developing that script I realized that the character seemed to line-up with Robert in all the good and bad ways. And the story of ‘Iron Man’ was really the story of Robert’s career.” Jon Favreau's The Chef has been in theaters for over a month now, so you can check it out if you get the chance.

RDJ made Tony Stark a much more interesting character than he is in the comics. And this is coming for a huge Iron Man fan. He has been my favorite superhero since I was 4. The first comic book I have ever owned was an Iron Man one on my 4th birthday. Been reading Iron Man comics ever since. Loved the 1st and 3rd movie. IM2 was really really dissapointing. I don't know why they danced around the Demon in the bottle story arc. I didn't like the film like at all. IM3 is the definitive Iron Man film for me. Great character development, great action, witty humour and a great villain overall. Loved the social commentary as well. Did the film have problems? Yeah it did but what I liked the most was Tony's character arc in the film. Shane went back to basics, stripped Tony of everything and left him with only his intellect to help him through his problems. The film explored whether Tony is a hero with or without the suit hence "Does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?" In the end, we do find out that it's the man that makes the suit. Loved the film. Can't wait to see him in AOU!

Haha yeah as Mark said, this isn't exactly anything new at all. Still, good to get the word out for the folks who've been living under a rock and can't remember a time when RDJ was the household name he is now...but for slightly different reasons. He owes a LOT to Marvel taking a flier on him, and his career resurgence is pretty much all due to Iron Man. Good for him!

@McNyagano, You're going to take a lot of crap for that comment, but I couldn't agree more. Was the plot twist not handled as well as it could've been? Yeah, most likely. Was Killian's backstory kind of dumb and cliche'? Yeah. But seriously, look past that.

The movie managed to make The Avengers even more relevant than it already was, and it continued Tony's arc in a realistic and natural way from there. It brought the trilogy full-circle and had major repercussions that will likely be felt in Avengers 2 and beyond. It's a fantastic Tony Stark film, along the lines of how Nolan's trilogy is an amazing set of Bruce Wayne movies. And this is coming from someone who HATED this movie when I walked out of the theaters, enough that I even wrote an entire editorial about it. Then I decided to give it another chance, and boy was I wrong. Iron Man 3 was great, and it's a shame so many fans are missing out on that.

@McNyagano

What a great comment. I also feel the same when it comes to IM3, that movie had some flaws, but it is also the more unique movie out of the MCU.

I personally liked IM2 a lot, but as a film it wasn't great. The actors made that one for me. IM3 was just too tonally confused. Super serious moments (ie, panic attacks) that could have been explored more were ruined by crappy jokes that weren't all that funny and yanked me right out of the movie. There was a new joke every line..I loved it up until the mandarin twist, but after that, I couldn't ignore all the flaws. But to each his or her own. I can see why people dig it now that I'm not blinded by fanboy rage! Lol.

It took me a second viewing to wrap my head around IM3. I'd read spoilers beforehand and [thought I] was prepared. Ended up a tad shocked at the final result (strictly speaking story-wise btw). It was still hella fun, however. And like I said, second viewing onwards it was great.

I agree that Sam Rockwell would have been impressive as Tony Stark. But RDJ definitely put his stamp on the character in a good way. I enjoyed the trilogy and I would love to see a 4th film with Favreau back in the driver's seat.

I'm also in the minority when I say I love IM2 all around besides a few Hammer scenes and the entire third act.

Or is that why people hate it? Whatever :P

IMO Shane Black's writing/humor did NOT fit with Tony in IM3.

This is actually surprising to me since i loved the first Iron Man film and became heavily interested in the character after that. What was great was Robert's performance as Tony Stark felt like he jumped out straight from a comic book. The only highlight's for me about the Iron Man sequels is Robert's performance as Tony Stark.

If Marvel where to adapt the demon in a bottle story arc for IM4 i believe that Robert has the capability of making Tony Stark as a character more darker and believable.

Apparently it was Favreau that Marvel didn't believe in. Rushing him through part 2 and then kicking him out of 3 effectively ruined the series.
